David Ellard probably just scored another year on the rookie list (does this apply for Jacobs too?) as the AFL have introduced the new rule which allows clubs to retain a rookies for a 3rd year without having to use the draft. I really hope that Ellard gets another year, and is one of the two nominated rookies!

There is an article on the AFL site somewhere but i cbf linking it (too tired)

9 hours this thread's been open and no sign of him. Not official but looking very likely now........ Guns is dead! :(

Come on, give him time. Once you hyper ventilate it takes some time for the paper bag to bring you back! :D

This is one such article from afl.com.au that outlines the new changes, which will allow Ellard another year, and Jacobs another 2 FWIW.

http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/86302/default.aspx

The AFL Commission this week ruled that clubs can re-rookie a player for a third straight season without that player first entering the NAB AFL Draft and the Pre-Season Draft.

The League introduced the changes in an effort to give existing clubs more list management flexibility while the Gold Coast and Greater Western Sydney franchises are granted draft concessions.

He is probably just on his way back to Perth having just successfully lobbied the AFL re the rookie list rules!! :thumbsu:
Yep something like that. Fitzpatrick is a boring old bugger and just wanted to talk about how great a teacher my dad was to him and that he made him all that he is today yadda yadda yadda
Thrilled I guess but to be honest I would have hoped Ellard had earnt a call up and I would hope will not just languish in the VFL. Give him a shot at AFL or allow him to roll the dice elsewhere. Always plenty of good promising WA lads the wablues can sponsor. Ellard must step up or be moved on.
I think he will do just that in the new look 2010 Carlton Blues.

Because of this new rule is it likely that we won't upgrade AJ onto the senior list so we can get an extra draft pick and just have him as one of our nominated rookies?

Also if this is the case who will get the other NR spot, Jacobs or Garlett?

IIRC last year it was AJ and Jacobs with Garlett being allowed to play due to Warnock/Waite being on the long term injury list

If Warnock is fit I can't see Jacobs getting too much game time in which case we should probably give the NR spot to Garlett and bring in Jacobs if we get a long term injury to a ruckman

AJ was signed to a 2 year contract during season 2009 so all we are waiting for with regards to AJ is an official announcement regarding his elevation. He will 100% be on our senior list next season.

But he signed that contract before the rule change, maybe they can still leave him on the rookie list with an NR spot (which essentially gives him a spot on the senior list) and guarantee him a spot on the senior list next year due to the contract being for 2 years, or does the contract mean he MUST be elevated?

I just think it's unusual they didn't announce it when they announced delistings, maybe because they were waiting on this possible rule change

An issue about remaining on a rookie list is pay, though to some extent they're happy just being given the chance to play AFL. But if I was Sam Jacobs and had spent 3 years at the Blues I'd be mighty peeved I was earning 1/2 of what an 18 year old kid drafted at pick 59 was on.

For this reason Joseph, Garlett and Jacobs would hopefully all be promoted; only a mean-spirited beancounter would deny them this. Hence the speculation about who the remaining delistees will be...

So assuming we use this new law on Ellard (3rd yr rookie) and Jacobs is coming up to his 2nd season on the list, I expect our rookie list to look like this:

1. David Ellard (3rd yr)
2. Sam Jacobs (2nd yr)
3. Greg Bentley (2nd yr)
4. Zac Tuohy (1st yr)
5. Peter Labi (1st yr)

That all means we'll probably have 4 selections in the 2009 RD.

Again, this article refers to a 3rd year on a list without having to be delisted. There is no suggestion that a player can be rerookied several times and have the clock restarted. I highly doubt Jacobs is allowed to spend 5 years as a rookie.

All TC stuff I have seen, also refers to the need to elevate Jacobs.

Only once before has a player spent 4 years on a club's rookie list and they were delisted and not re-rookied for one season after their first rookie year, so it was not consecutive.

Well that settles that.

Jacobs and Joseph have been elevated to the senior list.

Hill, Pfeiffer and Stanton have been delisted.

Tuohy and Labi have been added to the rookie list.

Ellard, Bentley and Garlett have been retained.

2010 Rookie List
1. David Ellard (4th yr)
2. Greg Bentley (2nd yr)
3. Jeff Garlett (2nd yr)
4. Zac Tuohy (1st yr)
5. Peter Labi (1st yr)

We had 7 rookies in 2009 so we'll probably have 2 selections in the 2010 Rookie Draft.

You forgot Garlett, plus I have a feeling that Labi's scholarship isn't a rookie list spot, I think it means over the course of the scholarship we have a priority of drafting him so we can use our last pick in that draft as Adelaide did with Taylor Walker a year or two ago

Can't believe I forgot Jeffy :thumbsu:

Labi's situation I'm not too sure about. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

We actually had 8 Rookies this year:

Darren Pfeiffer
Lachie Hill
Luke Stanton
Aaron Joseph
Sam Jacobs
Jeffrey Garlett
David Ellard
Greg Bentley

Just heard that Peter Labi is purely on a scholarship and won't be counted as a Rookie, so it gives us an extra spot to fill. :)

You are right - not sure how I miscalculated that.

I'm inclined to believe that your info on Labi is spot on so he'll be a scholarship holder rather than a spot on the rookie list straight away.

If we decide to have 8 rookie listed players in 2010 as we did in 2009 that means we'll have 5 selections in the Rookie Draft.

As we have no veterans on the senior list I'm expecting both Ellard and Garlett to be named as our nominated rookies in 2010 so they are available for senior selection throughout the year.

I just wonder what our strategy will be with regards to our rookie selections this year. Wouldn't surprise me to see us take a punt on a number of taller players. To be honest it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest to see Jake Edwards drafted onto our rookie list.
