Watch Tom Allwright in action

Bio: A powerful midfielder who is strong overhead, Allwright reads the play well and is good at the stoppages. A Tasmanian representative at the NAB AFL Under-18 championships. From North Hobart FC.

Jason McCartney says: He's a strong body-type at 185cm and 83kg. He played wing and through the midfield and was fantastically hard at it against South Australia in the championships. He had a good division two series and continued it on in that match.

Tasmanian U18 coach Andrew Mellor: He's a very strong, athletic midfielder who is good in and around the stoppages and just got better as the championships went on. He's from a strong rowing background and he missed a lot of the pre-season due to [rowing] commitments, so his running suffered early, but he just got stronger and stronger during the champs. He has a strong build, is strong over the ball, is good overhead and is quite a good kick of the footy. He's probably not the quickest player of the group that we sent away to the draft camp, but he's just a good, strong footy player. I'd see him in perhaps more of a half-back/back pocket role at AFL level.

In his own words

Strengths
Head over the ball, marking and quick hands around packs.

Weaknesses
Decision-making, backing myself, taking them on. Little things like that which you need to take to the next level.

Which AFL team do you support?
I go for Geelong.

Which AFL players do you try to model yourself on?
Ben Cousins used to be my favourite player before he stopped [playing]. The thing that I liked about him most was his work rate. He just never stopped. You’d see him come to the bench and he’d be spewing up. That’s what I really like about the amount of work you need to put in, just his tackling and stuff, it’s like the one-percenters that he really put in, not just the flashy stuff.

Which AFL team do you support?

I knew there was something about this kid I liked.

I think we have picked a good one here - To me there is touch of Joel Selwood about him. Low Centre of Gravity but can take a good mark - I only hope is as half as good as Joel.

Very nice pick up and good luck Tom - lets hope he goes alright

Not a bad rower either, stroked the Hutchins eight last year who won Head of the River.

That impresses me! if he knows how to hurt in a top rowing crew and he can play, we've got someone to watch on the way up.
Good luck, and give it all Tom!
