The salary cap is going up $2m, and we just lost Houston, Dixon and McKenzie without getting Perryman. Even adding Lukosius’ full salary wouldn’t be enough, especially when draftees have a standard contract of $130k next year. If Port was paying 100% salary cap this year it wouldn’t meet the salary floor of 95% for next year. That’s why clubs were throwing around those ridiculous offers for mediocre players like Battle, Perryman and Cumming.

So we basically have parked $400-$500k for a year because it’s an obligation for us to do so. It’s what we did with Matthew Lobbe

Lol, if you are struggling to meet the cap, just do what the Crows & other clubs do regularly... extend the contracts of your best talent & front load their contracts.

What is staggering is you didn't get a trade discount for taking Atkins on. Should have only given up a F2 instead of F1 for 2 salary dumps by the Suns.

Yeah, but you're talking about a side that hasn't made finals in 7 years vs one that has made top four in 4 of the past 5. List management gets harder the closer to a winning a premiership you get. See how Adelaide completely ****ed up their list going in 2018 with the ridiculous contracts you gave to Sloane and Jenkins et al.

Up until Collingwood came in at the last minute, we believed we were in the box seat for Perryman @ $850k a year. The two guys we could have approached and would have accepted long-term deals without question are Rozee and Horne-Francis. Rozee is contracted for 8 years. Horne-Francis signed a 6 year deal when he came over for what seemed like overs at the time but most would say now is good value ($800k a year).

We just signed Lukosius to a long term deal as well, and have money tied up in Marshall and Georgiades. The only two guys who would be worthy to extend and front load are Butters and Bergman, but it's not like either we or they are going to rush into signing a contract in the two weeks between Perryman signing for Collingwood and the end of the trade period.

Apparently we only received Pick 29 from Gold Coast because we took Atkins on. Again, there's a difference between clubs like Fremantle and Gold Coast dealing with Richmond who they don't see as competing with the for a finals spot and ultimately a flag in the near future...and Collingwood and Gold Coast dealing with Port, who both teams beat in 2024 and they would look at as being one of the few clubs that played finals that they could theoretically replace in the eight in 2025.

I think the club got unders for Houston but I also think that they got the absolute best deal they could for a player that suddenly wanted to go home the moment the new CBA came in. Don't have time for players like that.

Totally agree.
It's like GC said to Power that they wouldn't get Luko UNLESS they also took on Atkins and his full contract as well.

Let's be honest, Port had no interest or intentions to get Atkins. They would not have got him unless they had to.

I remember when Tippet wanted to go to Sydney, and Sydney offered us pick 23 and Jessie White for him. The Crows said, no we will just take 23 alone, and Sydney refused saying we had to take White as well. They wanted to make cap space for Tippet, and tried to force us to take White off their hands because they signed him up to a stupid contract and needed it gone.

Sydney were absolutely moronic at that time and Ireland paid a price for it.
