Analysis Ross Lyon

Serious? You didn't notice any things "changed" in this game? I thought our forward line was nothing like it has been. Did you post up a best 22 before the season started? What was your forward line? Did it rely on a 20 year old KPD being asked to play as a forward? Did it have a developing young player like Crozier as one of its' big hopes? How many goals did it have Sandilands pencilled in for?

Wow calm down. Don't you think it's noticeable when you kick 7 in a quarter then 5 for the rest of the game? Our fwd line looked unpredictable in the first and then they returned to the long bombing tripe we've been serving up for the last 2+ months and predictably did not score as freely.

I don't really get the 2nd part of your little rant. What does it matter who I had pencilled in to play fwd?

Lol. Ross Lyon is the best Freo coach ever and because we've lost 2 in a row (yet are still on TOP OF THE LADDER), people are saying to sack him (mostly on Freo's FB page)?

**** off, filthy casuals.

Reckon he should have swung Johnson or McPharlin up fwd instead of Pearce or maybe who just couldn't clunk them in the last

It is a direct reaction to your comment about why don't we do anything different. Our forward line is quite different.

Agree apart from that it is probably more important to give our backline some time together.
Yep I agree it was good to see McPharlin, Johnson Dawson ibbo and spurr back together, reckon we will get some benifit 1st week of finals if they all play last couple of games together

why we never have a small forward sneaking goal side when the high ball comes in is staggering. He's so intent on shutting off defensive holes, he won't even let his smarter forwards gamble ahead of the ball to get goals. All good sides do this, we don't.

Haha, yes. But in reality the coaching was fine.

The selection, however, was not.

Picked too many spuds with poor skills. Didn't pick a 2nd key forward, which allowed Tarrant to dominate. Same selection mistakes we have been making every week for the past 3 years.

Killer fact! : Taberner has only played in 1 losing side this year. Vs Richmond.

I pissed myself when the ball was kicked over the top and our only player running forward was Griffin with two defenders on him.

So he is not the one picking the butchers every week?

So to get it straight when we win it is all due to Lyon but when we lose it is the players fault.
Pretty sure Lyon would have no problem with wearing his responsibilities for however the team performs. More importantly he has the ability to take a look at whatever weaknesses there are and address them. May not sit well with what BF posters think should happen. To the list of butchers you would add Crozier and A Pearce for this round as players he selected but who did not really impact the game. I am sure he is ok with that decision too.

That is your killer fact.... 7 goals in a quarter is kind of handy. Reality is we hit our magic marker of 12 goals per game. Which spud with poor skills in our forward line would you have left out?

What was your opinion of Walters passing off in the forward line when he had a clean set shot for goal? What did you think of his handpass after the free kick? Bloody Lyon picking spuds with poor skills!

I wonder whether the supposed pre-season training load has come back to bite us. Fast out of the blocks and then tired and flat as the season grinds on.

Chris Mayne.

It may be, but it would be a poor excuse. Our sports scientists are professionals and the dangers of this are well documented. Also we have had opportunities to spread the workload during the year but have used the least number of players of the top teams (i think).

That's coz he's paid a lot of coin to take the good and bad.
Yes you are right. He is paid a lot of money because he is the consummate professional coach and taking the good with the bad is part of that. I guess we could find a cheaper coach, but I don't think money is an issue for the club, especially since Lyon turned us around and we became regular finalists.

I don't know how it looked on tv, but the main thing that changed after quarter time was our midfield lost control. From total control, kicking to players on leads to long bombs to outnumbered contests. Had nothing to do with the forwards per se.

The midfield consistently won the clearances, but after quarter time there was no fast direct movement inside 50. And when we bombed it in we couldn't make a contest (no surprise playing zero tall forwards)

We kicked 5.9 after quarter time so it had a bit to do with it.

In the final quarter we had 8 inside 50s in a row resulting in no score, before Harvey kicked a goal at the other end.

So yeah, I think our forward line issues had a fair bit to do with it.

Counter-intuitive but we would have been better off if we had not been doing quite as well as we did in the first half of the year. Maybe would have forced them to drop non-contributors more. Hard to drop people in a winning team, especially if you eschew a "play your role and you get a pass mark" philosophy. It would be demoralizing for players. However, the "give great effort" philosophy I think also plays into why the guys are playing shit right now, particularly the fringe guys. Just too many people scared of losing their spot that they aren't taking risks or are just playing too nervously to the detriment of the rest of the team.

When you bomb the ball to a two on one, it rarely matters how good the one is.
