Rumour Roughead to step down?

Did Footy Classified run with the story on Monday that Roughy would be stepping down as captain at the end of this year and possibly retiring also?

One year extension was announced in Herald Sun earlier this season, but nothing from the Club.

Didn’t watch it but wouldn’t come as a huge surprise if that was to eventuate. Sadly his illness has taken its toll on the big fella and he’s only around 60-70% of what we know he’s capable of IMO. Focus should be on his health and well-being and above all his family. If true, I’ll support his decision whichever way it goes.

So, currently these careers are under somewhat of a cloud: Cyril, Birch, and Rough. That's yet another 12 flags of experience and greatness with questions over them. All three prematurely too. Sad times.

They called it Rough Tumble I think. They just reiterate what some posters been saying about Roughy. He's a really good player but perhaps the captaincy responsibility is too much. They suggest Roughy to hand over captaincy and play another year as we are losing a lot of senior players already.

Cheers to the mods to stop the other thread getting bumped by making this one - top work!

Honestly wouldn't be opposed to Rough standing down and letting someone else take on the captaincy and let him focus on footy. I think Gunston is absolutely ready to step up as captain.

I would be happy if Rough handed the reigns over. Concentrate on playing another year and and family. Let someone else do all the additional captaincy duties. I Omith, Shiels, Gunston, McEvoy, Stratts or maybe Mitchell. Any of those could take over. We are definitely short on the leadership we once had.

If it does happen, I think Smithy will be the man. His on field leadership seems to be top notch. Very vocal, possitive and seems to be directing traffic as well. There were some great shots of him instructing 'Hodge style' last week.

Absolutely makes sense he steps down at the end of this season as captain. 2019 will be his last IMO.

Smith or Shiels next in line. Would prefer to go a bit more left field, possibly Tom Mitchell

I think Tom would definitely springboard into the leadership group in the absence of Roughy - however he might be a bit young still to take on the captaincy. Based on the current age of our vice captains I would expect that Shiels would get the nod with Gunston promoted to VC.

I wouldn't be shocked if he retired at the end of the year. He's got a newborn kid and given what he's gone through no one would begrudge him if he decided to call it a day. He's had an amazing career.

4 flags, a Coleman, and the captaincy of this magnificent footy club, does not get much better than that. Like Cyril, he owes us nothing.

Amazing that he hasn't missed a game since coming back Round 1 last year. One has to wonder though just how many goals he would've kicked in his career had he not missed all of 2016, half of 2011 and 2005 and 2006 he played mainly at center half back? That's also on top of spending a fair amount of time in the midfield. He could've had around 700-800 goals.

I've always found teams function better when your #1 player isn't the captain. Shiels for mine.

Yeah Vanders being captain surely did provide a more fruitful period in this clubs history than Hodge's tenure.

I reckon Sheila has really stepped up this year, and would be the type of bloke who would lift to a new level again if given the captaincy.

Yep, Smith's the man. He would be a great captain IMHO.

Surely Smith or Shiels are the next cabs off the rank for the captaincy?
So if KPP players struggle to do what they normally do if they also carry the captaincy, then give it to O'Brien. He might do something different.

Your captain certainly doesn't have to be your best player.

I'm actually against someone like Tom getting it, as I think he is at his best with no distractions, just on the coal face tearing it up. The main I would desperately love to get it, is Ben McEvoy - this guy embodies passion and dedication, there aren't many who wear their heart on their sleeve and give their absolute all like BigBoy does, perhaps not since some greats like Stynes and Madden!

I also really like the idea of rucks as captains, they're in the guts, but they also get around the ground, the whole team sees them throughout the game (not just in huddles etc.) Never mind that Ben is very articulate, and whilst softly spoken, I think everyone would listen when he talks.

I'd be very happy for him to be a VC at the very least.
