Ok we all have seen enough now to be able to choose the round 1 team. Who here really has a clue?? lets find out.

BAKER DAWSON BLAKE
S.FISHER GILBERT GRAM
GODDARD HAYES DAL SANTO
MCQUALTER REIWOLDT SCHNIEDER
STANLEY KOSCHITZKE MILNE

MCEVOY JONES MONTAGNA

KING RAY ARMITAGE DEMPSTER

EMG: STEVEN GWILT R.CLARKE

Thats the team I'd love to see. Get Stanley in the mix greta talent. I Dont think gardiner will be ready plus why risk him with travel for?

Best centre line in the league? Would definitely go close.

Yeah very tough for fringe players to break into the starting team which is a good sign of our depth.

That team is pretty much how I'd expect them to line up. If Gardiner is fit he should start ahead of King who has been pretty ordinary in the NAB games so far. Not sure where Gardiner's fitness is at though, he would probably need to play at least one pre-season game to be any chance for Rd.1

Not sure if Stanley will start in Rd.1 but if he keeps playing like he has the last couple of games it would be tough to leave him out. Definitely needs to have more game time though if he is to be a serious contender for a starting spot.

I also think Dempster's spot is probably up for grabs too with a few other fringe players like Peake, Gwilt, Raph Clarke (if fit), Smith, Steven etc. Will probably depend on who can impress the most in the next couple of weeks. Armitage and Ray should be safe for spots on the bench but they would want to keep performing with so much competition for spots.

McEvoy - Is he the Number 1 Ruckman now?

I would still say Gardiner but he is number 2 now.

I reckon we need a 3rd forward tall and Stanley has shown brilliance why not get games into him??

Gwilt was impressive at half back against sydney - another option. id have him before raph - better disposal. Gwilt may get lost at half forward tough position to play - half back lot easier.

missing out: Clarke, Dempster, Raph, Smith, Steven, Stanley, Eddy, Geary....

(Gwilt is obviously at HB for a reason).

HB. J. Gram, S. Fisher, J. Blake

HF. A. McQualter, N. Riewoldt, B. Goddard
F. A. Schneider, J. Koschitzke, S. Milne
R. M. Gardiner, L. Montagna, C. Jones

Int. S. King, F. Ray, D. Armitage, J. Gwilt

  • Am assuming Michael Gardiner will be fit, still keen to play Ben McEvoy, 50/50 with Steven King
  • James Gwilt to play on Goodes as stated earlier
  • Rhys Stanley won't play R1
  • Sean Dempster a Ross Lyon fav, could sneak in
  • Clarke, Eddy, Geary, Steven and A. Smith stiff, but will be pushing and will get games, great to have such depth
  • Brendon Goddard to play forward hopefully
Just my opinions, cant wait to Round 1! Am making the flight over to ANZ Stadium and reckon a full strength Saints, fresh of a NAB CUP premiership;), will give a very good showing to kick start the year of the Saint.

I just reckon our preparation is a little behind teams such as Port, WB, Freo, Swans etc. We may see a slower start to the season this year?

Well yesterday Nicky Dal did say "We're not where we want to be at the moment." So I'm hoping that doesn't mean too much leading into the season proper. Then again the club has reported that the boys are fitter, if not just as fit as this time last year.

Port, Freo and the Swans have all had a month extra of training compared to us. But I still reckon we'll be alright come Sydney in a close game like usual.

After tonight GWILT has pushed out CLARKE for mine.

Better disposal just looks more in control Id rather him have the Ball than raph.

We have serious depth right now its really good.

The last interchange spot really is a toss up between Ray, Peake, Stanley, Steven.

Against teams like the dogs, pies, geelong and hawks I would play Ray, Peake or Steven.
Against all other teams I would play Stanley to get some experience into him. He will soon be a ready made replacement or addition to the fwd line for some more potency.

Stanley has the making of being a combo of Gilbert and Roo.

Note: I think Dawson is gone, not skillful enough and not strong enough in the body to play against the big fwds. He looked good last year because Stkilda looked good

Pretty spot on... I think for Round 1 only, the rucks are likely to be King and McEvoy, given Gardiner's lack of pre-season. The last spot to me looks like a shoe in for Geary, as Eddy's been out injured, dempster is neither here or there and Steven still has a injury cloud over him. You didn't mention Peake - but I am thinking that he may be worth skipping for round 1 against Sydney.

Of course, Ross can make a mockery of all of us and play Rhys against them.

I don't think Rhys'll play round one.

Rd 1 team ? I have no idea - there are at least 28 players who, in my opinion, deserve to find a spot in there...

Depth can be a terrible thing when selecting just 22 players every week. I fear that there will be a lot of tough decisions this year and several not all of us will like - just ask guys like Hudghton, Maguire or Ball whether Lyon cares about their reputation or past.

We played without arguably two of our three best players last night and lost the third of that group half way through the game. Yet there was never any doubt that we will win.

I pretty much agree with that team although I'd start Stanley in a forward pocket ahead of Lynch and I'd still expect Dawson to start at full back.

Stanley looks a lot more ready for AFL IMO than Lynch who looked a little overawed at times last night. The thing I really like about Stanley is he seems to have a lot of confidence to back himself and has good goal sense for a guy his size. The goals he has kicked the last couple of weeks have been real opportunist type goals. Apart from that he is a good mark and has pace which can really trouble opposition defences. With most defenders focused on Riewoldt and Kosi he could really slip under their guard and add another dimension to our forward line.

The interchange bench is still a toss up between a number of players. One spot would obviously go to a ruckman (McEvoy, King or Gardiner with one other starting), Armitage should be a lock for the next spot but then the other two spots are a toss up between Ray, Peake, Geary, Dempster, Steven, Lynch, Eddy & Raph Clarke. The first three are probably the favourites to get a bench spot at this stage.

F. Goddard J. Koschitzke, S. Milne

R. McEvoy, C. Jones D. Armitage

Int. King, McQualter. Baker, Stanley

I think Gwilt has taken Clarke's spot and improved efforts from Geary will allow Goddard to be released up forward and Gram to be less accountable and more attacking from a wing position, which at Docklands will be more beneficial as he can run and kick long to the goal square.

I think the major and more exciting aspect of our game which has gone unnoticed is out ability to penetrate long at the goals or into the goal square. Previously we just relied on the chip n pass until we had a chance at goal.

I may be too forward heavy on the bench however if Stanley gets his game together quickly I believe he can be a very damaging wing with his run n leap. This takes away his perceived spot CHF or FF competing against Kosi and Nicky R

I think it's time we played the kids (Armitage, McEvoy, Geary, Steven) rather than persisting with Raph and Gwilt. What you get at this stage from Geary is a lot more consistent that Gwilt and Raph, and in time, will be a far better player than both. Steven, I think, should play between 11-15 games this season, more if he shows that he shows he is better or equal to someone like Brett Peake. IMO, Armitage should play all season - not because we "should" be giving him games - but because I think he will show that he is in best 22. Additionally, Alistair Smith will hopefully play some games this year as well.

With the big men, McEvoy has shown some real promise in the NAB cup - he doesn't look as lumbering as he did, and, for me, he adds more to the side than King does. Between, Gardiner, King and McEvoy, our ruck stocks are good. A real bolter has been Stanley, showing great athleticism and agility. I think he should be seriously looked at to play in the forward line, should Riewoldt (touchwood!) or Kosi go down.

AFTER the NAB cup/Pre season. I think there might be a few changes.

Dawson isnt doing what rossy has told him. miles looks more composed might be surprise selection. Kosi was just bad so so bad. Mc Evoy has clearly gone ahead has the agility over Kosi and just as good a mark and kick for goal so why not?? Especially while Kingy can still go which he can. onya KINGY!!

KOSI needs to be dropped - he's not working hard enough.

This is the team ID like to see anyway. hopefully Hayes, Gardiner and Fisher are alright otherwise KOSI, DAWSON will HAVE to be selected.

Personally, I'm not confident that Gardiner will get a round one gig, because of his lack of pre-season, meaning McEvoy'd take the gig at ruck.

This would force the Saints to play either Kozi, Stanley or Lynch. I'd love to see Stanley get the gig, and he probably deserves it, but unfortunately, I can't see him getting a gig over Kozi.

Hopefully, we get to see Stanley early, but I'm not confident of it.
