It can, but you're more likely to go on to become an all-time great than a complete bust if you win it. Only he and Rhys Palmer were the two genuine eff-ups (and Bont should have won it over Taylor anyway). For the Taylor's and the Palmer's there is Buckley, Goodes, Cousins, Riewoldt, Mitchell and Selwood.
Not that you mentioned him, but regarding Stephenson; he'll probably not end up in the Hall of Fame, but I don't think a Byron Pickett-like career is out of the question (maybe one more flag
