Spot on. Everyone can bang on about how useless our rucks were (and they were considering the oppo), but we did win the hitouts by a bit. There's simply no excuse for the wooden spooners to be able to waltz out of clearances as easily and often as they were. They weren't getting silver service from a gun ruck, at best it was 50/50 once it hit the deck and they still pulverised our mids.

Theres something seriously wrong with the way we setup. And Simmo can bang on about effort as much as he wants but it's not like it was a once off. If the players are continually not giving enough effort, drop them or change it up.

Feel like there's still a feeling of when Nic comes back it'll all be good, we really need to get past that imo

(Having said that, I do look forward to at some stage this year having a centre square of Nic ,Yeo, Culley and Ginbey)

It’s not just set-up, it is first and second movements once the ball is in play also.

Too often all of the players either get sucked in towards the contest (we win ball, handball to a guy still within the contest and under pressure, or they win ball and scrub it to free players on the outside who have seemingly unlimited time).

The other favourite of this group is to keep space but in a line (essentially parallel with the goal line). If we win the ball it can work (overlap), if we don’t it is a recipe for disaster as the opposition just need to get 1 player through (noting we are terrible tacklers also) and they are running forward uncontested.

We are desperate for defensive mids. Ginbey shows those traits, as do Yeo and Culley. But we also need to see structural changes in stoppage coaching. It seems insane we keep getting beaten the same way, surely we are trying to change that (so is it the players, or the coaches, who are not fully understanding the severity of the issues?!)

We aren't picking the mids to do the hard stuff in close.

They are either not available in Yeo and Culley or not ready in Hewett or simply not getting opportunities such as Clark, Trew and West.

Is there any chance Trew or Edwards gets an opportunity early in the season.

Wonder why they pegged Clark as a winger when our seniors apart from Yeo are outside af?

If Culley and Yeo are unavailable I hope he comes in, seems the best stopgap choice to hold his own in that role.

West would be good too, as would XoN coming good.

He is correct though. I can't even tell you the amount of times we have been 30-40 points up, went to sleep for a couple of quarters and woke up late to win. Or, conceded a big lead and had to fight back.

To think about when the club last, even in our premiership years, played 4 hard quarters and had a team on the ropes and put the foot on the throat and went for the kill, consistently, we would have to go a back a long way

This is why, in part, we missed top 4 in 2019/2020 because concentration lapses and sitting back an admiring our handiwork, rather then going for the kill, cost us valuable percentage (and we missed top 4 on percentage)

2015. We played some seriously sexy footy that year.

Sheppinghaaaaaaaaam!

Because he came in, played a good first game as an inside mid and showed the credit boys up.

He learned don’t upset the apple cart or you will play wing or be the sub and sit on the bench for 3 quarters.

That’s a far reach there…. So he played too well and upset the apple cart and hence isn’t getting a game.

I suspect they are reducing training loads on a few extremely important players.
I am now thinking Yeo will play for some reason, just an itch but I think there is much more riding on this game than just being round 2 worth 4 points.

I assume the game he’s actually talking about is the Melbourne game, which was Clark’s second game and the only one where he attended more than 35% of the centre bounces.

Interestingly it was the only game he played without Shuey, so maybe he was playing Shuey’s role that day? Maybe there’s something about those two that makes the club reluctant to use them both in the middle together?

I can’t quite put the whole argument together, but I think it’s probably a more logical thread to follow than “he was too good and showed the other players up.”

It’s a bit like when I insisted that I was kicked out of the school choir for singing too well and showing everyone else up. That’s definitely what it was.
It wasn’t that I’m tone deaf.

This is the same poster that stated that winning a flag was the worst thing that could've happened for Simmo, if I recall correctly.

Just add it to the list.

I’m just surprised we’ve found a player he likes.

Before teams drop.

Out: Witherden, XON, Kelly,
In: Petch, Culley, Hewett (sub)

Culley comes in for an uncompetitive Kelly.

Petch would offer more than O'Neill and was a poor sub choice. He's a hit up small forward who squeezes out the back every now and again. Not a burst player who impacts stoppages so he's not a good sub.

Witherden because of balance. It's either him or Hurn. Move Jones back because we need more dash.

Hewett to debut as a sub. Mid/ forward role.

It's an 8 day break into a Sunday game. Maybe they're happy to give them a fitness test tomorrow morning which gives them a 48hr break before the game.
