Nope no Petch, he came on fresh as a daisy to tear it up for a quarter and a bit and did diddly squat.
Don't know what his instructions were but I am pretty sure it wasn't to run around like a headless chook avoiding the ball and contact.
He must of saw Ryans first half and thought that was how you go about it.
in - Culley, Hough, Yeo?(unless I'm missing something) 2nd halves like that.
out - Petch, Jamo, Xon, 2nd Qtrs like that.

Our Ruck stocks suck badly, absolutely lost with what to do there.

OUT: XON, Witherden, Jamieson
IN: Hewett, Hough, H. Edwards

I feel like Culley will need a WAFL practice game or two to get ready, and from the WAFL write-up in The West today Hewett was one of the stand-outs.

Out: Jammo , Xon, Witho, Petch
In: Waterman, Culley, Hough, Hewitt

  • I think leave Chesser in as i think he needs more game time and look at worst we sub him out.
  • Waterman as another scoring option and can do some rucking in a pinch.
  • Hewitt as sub i guess as they don't seem too keen on playing him in a full game.
  • Hough for Witho is a no brainer.

play waterman we tank, same as XON.

Culley mystery absence is due to a sore calf according to The West, expected to be available this week.

The club said that on Friday, in the article about WAFL team selection.

Also said Hough had been ill and Waterman had been getting managed through the pre-season.

Chesser is an interesting one, looked miles off it not AFL standard yet, but dont want to kill his confidence by dropping him after 1 game.

Really shouldnt of been picked, but give him a couple more and hope he shows he belongs and the North game was an aberration.
Not that XON is anything special but it didnt stop them from playing him for 1 game and dropping him on numerous occasions.

Chesser's debut was probably one of the most underwhelming debuts ive seen. Probably needs a month in the WAFL.

Waterman puts in more effort than half the senior players out there. He should play. He’s always good for a little purple patch during a quarter where he kicks a few. As a third tall, that’s all you really need from him.

Always kicks a few?? Bloke averages less than a goal a game. .. he has only had 70 odd games and 6 six seasons to prove he is worth anything..

Always going to be rinse and repeat. Plays a good WAFL game, gets an afl game and sucks then back to the WAFL to go again

I'm all in on the yoof. Gotta play Chesser for a good block of footy. We gain nothing long term by ripping him out of the side and playing him in a WAFL practice match this weekend.

Really insightful listen to Schoeys podcast this morning. He thinks that loss was so much less about game style and tactics, and more a failure to do the fundamentals well. Broken tackles, dropping the ball, fumbling, getting the footy stripped when being tackled.

Goes some way to explaining how a guy like Chesser playing a possession or two outside of the contest can be stuck without a touch as we spilt the ball at the coalface over and over. It's also hard to get your ball movement going or set up effectively behind the ball when that's the sort of touch we have.

We should be encouraging youth at the selection table, not raging that Chesser had a quiet game.

It was probably his first proper football game in years. He is the future, get games into them.

If we lose every game I don't care, give the young hungry guys a chance.

Clear as day, good call Schoey. Might not have meant much, but we should have snatched that even given our decision to only play three of the permitted for quarters. Fumbled it away.

We’ll be ok. Not saying everyone should book September flights to the MCG, but we’ll be ok. Some weeks we’ll take some lumps, other weeks we’ll be pretty pleased with the shape of it all and maybe some of the kids too. There’s more footy in this side than people will think.

I'm torn on dropping Chesser. I get people saying he needs a block of games and I do want us to play the kids. I'm just not sure that getting smashed in the afl and collecting 5 disposals while playing as a defensive winger is the greatest thing for his development. Ideally he'd get some games in the WAFL (I know it doesnt start for a few weeks) where he can be more attacking and hunt the ball without the expectations and consequences. He needs some confidence in his body and for him to know that he has what it takes to play against men.
I'd give him one more and if he looks as lost out there next week he needs a stint in the WAFL before coming back to the AFL side.

Sort of agree in that he does deserve an extended run - few youngsters tear it apart in their debut game especially after a year without football - but if he continues with single digit possessions and no impact for five games surely it's time to rotate him out.

Seeing Harry Edwards name being thrown around as a ruck option. He player half/three quarters in the ruck against Brissy last year and didn’t win a single hit out. In the end he was moved to defence where he played a lot better. One of Jamo/BW stay in the side. Probably gets the nod as he nwent into the game as the first choice ruck

I agree with this as the main issue. But the other thing that was concerning is a team defence was absolute shite in the first half, watching at the ground it seemed as though as soon as North got clean ball to the outside we had a complete inability to stop or even pressure North until it got inside their 50. We seemed to man up better in the second half, not sure if that was a tactical change or just implementing the original tactics better.

Seriously think we need to go in with one ruck and back them up with a tall midfielder (Clark? Culley?). Or switch Witherden out for Edwards and Edwards can be the back up ruck.

I forgot about that - just checked the stats and Edwards had 0 hitouts from 32 ruck contests in that game. Ouch! For comparison Jamo got 13 hitouts from 50 ruck contests that day.

Jamo's 10 hitouts from 17 ruck contests from 50% game time on the weekend isn't horrific but his 3 disposals (all uncontested) zero tackles for half a game of footy is a problem. As is Petch's 1 lonely disposal / 1 tackle effort from 1/3rd of a game.

Where do you get the contest numbers? And wherever it is, do they also publish hitouts to advantage?
