Autopsy Round 23 vs Essendon

Believe it or not, I was pretty keen for this game.

Coz it was the first weekend I've had off in a month and I hadn't been to a game in yonks so I was looking forward to finally sinking some beers on The Hill.

Then I checked the fixture earlier this week. And saw the game was on Friday night. When I'd be working. FFS.

Caught bits and pieces on my breaks and shit. Polec seemed to to play like a man possessed. Pretty typical of our players to pick and choose when they show up. Like a farewell game.

Take the money and piss off, Polly.

Swear I must've seen every good piece of play Billy did. Clunked a couple of marks, kicked a goal. So, I'm thinking he must be BOG, lol. Not quite. But it sounds like he did okay around the ground and gave us that chop-out in the ruck.

Exactly what we expected from him, which we could've done with for, I dunno, half the f@%king season!

Final siren sounds and I just shook my head and giggled. Have absolute disdain for this club rn. We are a mockery of what we once were. An absolute sham.

Then I had to stay back two hours coz of a faulty alarm at work and didn't get home until 3am, what an all-round campaigner of a night...

It concerns me that we are a bit Bob Cunis at the moment ( not quite one or the other).

We are probably just about past our legitimate window and not at the stage where we have the true young guns to hang our hat on while they bed in to give us a reason to put up with the shitshow.

A week from the end of August and it feels like winter is coming and I don't see where the hope is coming from.

I just sat that there last night with no emotional connection to the game.

Did not cheer, did not get upset at umpiring decisions and just laughed when we turned the ball over. Could not care less about what happened during the game.

Why should I give a shit about the game when the players and coaches don't?

Very dissapointing night . I felt really flat too before the game , no excitement, I didn't even stand for ' Never tear as apart '
Players sure started like that as well .
Apart from Ryder , Polec and Westhoff , Leienert and Farrell nobody appeared to be playing with any passion .
Very dissapointing

Stating the obvious but the team just went walkabout too many times. The most glaring example was the first quarter where we just could not do a thing right. Usually at games in the first quarter I will be up in arms(usually incorrectly) about a few frees but in the first quarter I could not yell at the umpire as our own players were so inept. After the expected second quarter fightback when we kicked 4.3 to 0.3 in the first 22 minutes of the quarter we again went to sleep and allowed them to kick 3 straight goals in 4 minutes to put us on the back foot. Before that 10 of the 11 goals in the match had been kicked to the northern end.
18 minutes into the third quarter we were keeping with them but then allowed another 3 goals in 3 minutes. Just before the end of the 3rd quarter we were 43 points down but got to 17 down still with 17 minutes of real time left. Although we did not concede goals in a rush this time we let Essendon dominate over the last few minutes. Even Robbie Gray was guilty of the handball syndrome, handballing backward when he had a clear run down the wing and causing a player under pressure to be tackled and give away a free.

The worrying thing is, we could easily cut 8 - 10 players from our list.

Mckenzie, Toumpas, Pittard, Neade, S Gray, Barry, Irra, Thomas, Amon to name some and we will more than likely lose Polec and Atley.
If I was being honest with who I don't think will make it, or those who are spent and are just set to provide depth, I'd cut a whole lot more than that. I'd cut Tomupas, Barry, Amon, McKenzie, Trengove, Neade, Johnson, Thomas, Hewett, Snelling, Irra, Ladhams, Frampton, Broadbent, Hombsch, Drew.

That's 16 players, about a third of our list, that personally I don't think have a real future, other than possibly adding depth occssionally.

In reality though I could probably add Rockliff whose on borrowed time and Pittard whose just gone off a cliff this year, to that list too.

We don’t have a system to win a clearance that’s why we didn’t take advantage of the Ruck stoppages.

Robbie is the only mid that moves at a stoppage and that’s why he is so good. The rest stand their so the opposition sweat on it and tackle.

It’s appaling. I still can’t believe Voss got extended. I don’t know what this is based on. It makes me very disappointed.
It almost makes me wish i could vote in someone to the board who feels this way....

I'm sure it's already been mentioned, but Frampton's return of 4 contested marks, 1 goal (probably should've had another) and a concerted chop-out for Ryder - who himself played his best game in ages - while Westhoff got to stay forward and dob 5, might've vindicated just how duncey our selection metrics are.

Ok sure, Leuenberger in a dead rubber ain't exactly Max Grundy, but fuuuuu-, etc.

Carn mate it was his 1st game. Your right about his role as a chop out but many have said on here for a year or 2 he's a better
KP player than ruck.
The sample size on Neade and S gray is big enough they've racked up over 100 games between them and both played last night.
Sadly I think Hombsch is cooked. Logan Austin like Ah Chee left for more opportunities and both were up grades.
Hammer was a big loss.

It’s not a crack at him at all I think he showed a few really good sign last night. I just think to be an undersized ruck is not going to be where he makes his career.

Agree on all the others. I’d be looking to delist or trade SGray, Neade, Pittard, Hombsch.

Yep this is the sort of thing many say, oh he's a good man, oh he's hurting, etc. However at the end of the day we don't care. We want someone who is good enough to get results in the job and Ken's sample size is now way bigger than it ever should've been, and we know he can't do the job. He may get hurt, it may not be the nice decision, but **** nice. We need to be brutal in our quest to be the best, not to just be competitive and make finals.

I agree, Ken should go. I wasn’t so much defending him as saying, Well if we’ve got him then maybe we try to use him in a more appropriate way.

Problem being we know the club won't cut that many but i agree with you.

Everyone will say game plan / coaching / personnel was the reason we are shot at the moment. However last night it was so evident to me that the majority of players have lost full confidence in their ability. So many times last night I saw fumbles, simple missed kicks, simple dropped marks, hesitation when going for a spoil etc. etc.

That probably does stem from coaching to an extent, but holy shit it's an epidemic and it has gone through almost the entire team. Even Robbie was fumbly last night. So many of those close losses has crippled this team. They are playing like they are trying to survive, instead of trying to win.

Someone at the ground told me Neade came in with a dodgy knee. Not did it in the warm up but was dodgy on Thursday night but still selected. I can't remember if he come into the game with it strapped up but I remember seeing it when did a bit of play in front of me early in the 2nd quarter.

Did Ken give him a fair well game?

Tim Ginever ripped into him for 3 consecutive poor efforts when the bombers had a run on in the 3rd quarter. He held back but basically was saying he is finished.

After 6 farken years he admits it isn't working. On the coin he's getting we're saddled with a learner who will change.
I'm well past cutting this prick any slack. OK Ken what mark do you give yourself for 2018 and tell us
what you said to the PAFC to get you contract extended last year. That you were the man for the job?
This. Spot on.

Just a random thought and I’m not sure if anyone else has mentioned this already, but given the announcement this morning that’s Lade is leaving the club, is it possible that this was announced to the players either before the game or in the last day or so, and in doing so had an impact on the players mindset going into the game. (I’m in no way making excuses for last nights performance).

Melbourne supporter who watched this game to see how Jack Watt's played. I've been a Watts supporter (brother coached him at junior level) and really didn't want to see him go to another club. I've got to say, I'm not sure what he brings to your club and I really wish he'd find some mongrel in him. Unfair?

He is a really good user of the ball that's what he brings. Our forward entries have been diabolical for years. Unfortunately out whole forward setup has been terrible this year .Wingard barely got a touch playing g forward until we put him in the middle againsts Richmond.

He could be harder at it but we know how he plays by now. No surprises .

Considering that ken still had a year to run on his contract when he was resigned, surely there would have been a clause stating that in 2018 finals would have to be achieved.
No, Koch and KT shat the bed and were so scared that Ken was pissing off to the Gold Coast they wouldn't have put any performance clauses in. Ken would be quite comfortable that in September 2020 he will be given a further 3 year extension taking him through until 2024. He will be the ten year coach Koch promised.

I've got no clue. There isn't a standout candidate which is alarming. I think Boak has worked his butt off and been a great servant of the club but I think its time for a new freshness to the team.
I am a believer in leading by example, so that means the captain should have good skills, not just an off field leader.
So with that I would make Wingard captain, may be unpopular but some one that is capable of lifting a side

I wouldn't know most of them if I tripped over them in the street so I have to say no.

In Amanda Vanstone's defence she has been in Canberra talking about the Libs leadership spill. She even mentioned Port on The Drum.
Hope she's as blunt in the board room as she was on TV yesterday.

Well the blame should be aimed at Koch and KT. Surprising really considering Koch's occupation to make such a dumb call along with Thomas.
