So I may or may not have gone into a full blown meltdown whilst watching today's game. Thankfully I waited till I'd calmed a bit before venturing onto Bigfooty. So my thoughts post match today;

If it rains, we might as well just forfeit. We played anti wet weather football. Handballs everywhere. Darling's handball to Masten on the 50 almost made me throw my beer at the tv.

It's embarrassing how slow we are. A joke. I don't even know if Jetta can run anymore, he sure as hell plays like he doesn't. Is there any flat out speedsters in the WAFL? We need two at least urgently.

On a more positive note, I thought Giles and Vardy did alright in the ruck together. Unfortunately, Giles big lumbering lumberjack body is a big liability around the ground.

Kennedy and the suffocation treatment he received today. Was atrocious. Looked like a man defeated by the end of it.

My biggest melt was the lack of wet weather smarts. Several times we should've kicked a goal in the last. There was the 3 on 1 that JK and Lecca went up for. Jk paddles to Hill, who misses it. He fumbles the pick up and tries to flick to JK, but he can't collect it, and it ends up with Cotchin booting it 50m the other way.

Hill's attempt in the last 2 minutes when we still had a chance. Wtf man?

Handballing constantly in the wet, and then ****ing everything up. Gov taking a bounce. Through the middle. Whilst it was pouring. Then turning it over.

Jetta, after doing an amazing pick up, the best thing he's done as an Eagle, then kicks it over the head of two players but just in front of Darling. 3 players as options, but instead it's a 50/50 throw in.

What's worse is that if we'd kicked straight in the first half, we win. 5 goals up at half time would've been enough in that weather.

That game will also take a toll on a five day turnaround. Well done Eagles high ups on that one.

^^This. This is what really hurt about this loss. Knowing that if we kicked straighter in just that first quarter we would have blown the tigers away.

And how did Darling miss that goal right in front at the end of the 3rd?!??

40 out in the wet does that.

A sad day for the believers. We are an ordinary side period. Too many slow players who crap themselves under pressure and overuse the footy something cronic. We have not improved at all away in Melbourne especially at the MCG. The match commitee and coaching staff need to get real and give some of the younger guys with talent a game. Duggan needs to come in for Hutchings or Redden both slow and have zero hurt factor, Give Francis Watson a game and move Wellingham into the mids. That gets rid of 2 slow players. When Venebales shows a bit more in the WAFL bring him in also. Rioli in for Hill once fit and the team can improve.

The lack of toughness and the weak tackles i repeat weak attemped tackles that wouldnt even stop a 2 year old were deplorable.

The silly thing is we could have easily won this game. This season is going to be a strange one like no other but we will be playing no part in the last 2 weeks of the year based on what i have seen so far this year. With Nic Nat it hides a lot of our defeciencies without him we have been badly exposed

Pretty much agree with all of this. I thought Darling was good but JK has become such a focal point that we're ****ed if he gets shut down. Shows if anything that we need more goalkicking mids. Hard to think of any other teams so dependent on their KPF

Jetta seems to have lost a fair bit of pace since coming from the Swans, unaware of what injuries he's had in the past 3 years or so, but he doesn't look like he's willing to take anyone on.

As for "speedsters" we certainly don't have any Flash, Kid Flash or Jessie Quick types. Closest would be Franky, Venables, Bayok and Rotham. Brophy has a bit of dash but I don't see him making it at this level. Mutimer has a bit of pace, not lightning quick though. Precise kicking can make you look fast but When we come up against teams like the Tigers or even Freo, it's always going to be a struggle because of the leg speed of their smaller players who will cut straight through the midfield like what happened a few times today. Priddis has never been a two way player because he can't keep up and Mitchell's the same, we need quicker players around them. Masten, Hutchings and Redden don't cut it.

As for small forwards the Tigers smalls showed they can turn games and be extremely damaging especially when theirs more than 1. Our small forwards has been something the club has refused to address for years up until last year And IIRC the club recruiters didn't seem happy about the Rioli selection, Simmo and Rawlings did though. Had we not wasted a pick on Redden we could have had Jade Gresham. We also had a chance to take a gamble on Liam Ryan last year, who's had a good start to the WAFL season kicking 13.5 in 4 games. Same as JK over 3 games. Imagine looking at

FF: Rioli Kennedy Ryan
HF: Gresham Darling LeCras

It looks more threatening than having Hill, Cripps, and then one of Masten/Redden/Hutchings/Jetta lining up across HF.

Cripps and Hill are good when they're on, but it's fairly inconsistent and that's because theirs no one in the WAFL threatening to take their spots and they know that. They can just show up each week and don't have to worry about being dropped.

Out of all thise I forgot to mention our tackling. Our tackles never ever stick. We must be one of the worst tackling sides in the AFL. And on the flipside, we never ever break a tackle. Shuey can dash off and Mitchell loves a teasing evade, but no one else can shrug a tackle. Physically we are pathetic. All teams need to do is play contested ball with a few speedsters waiting to swoop on the loose ball = profit.

I was thinking the same (have been for years) we struggle with sticking tackles. We made a twig like Daniel Rioli look invincible yesterday. I remember Woosha tried to address it one pre season by running a tackling session with the Western Force, but I guess it's something that needs to happen more consistently than one session or one pre season. I think it's a lack of aggression, too many good guy types.

And that's because of the recruiting. Club more concerned about looking good to the public than winning games

Thankfully didn't see the game and won't bother watching the replay now given everyone's view on how poor it is. I am of the opinion though that this is a once off, away from home, 30+ km/h winds and eventually rain, sort of day.

The eagles are no good at that sort of football and yet they still produced enough scoring shots to win. It doesn't seem that bad from that perspective.

What were the shots on goal like? Were they having shots from everywhere and missing ala St. Kilda last week against us, or were they missing absolute sitters?

We lost contested possessions and tackles. All that indicates is softness, usually you'd win one and lose the other, how could Richmond be first to the ball more and also tackle more if we were really giving it 100%?

Midfield slowness is one thing but lay out a Martin or Rioli with a big hit and the confidence to run and carry drops - so many times we'd make weak contests and the Richmond speedsters would get their mojo going because of that. Starts with the captain Hurn - had a few opportunities to clean someone up and chose to lightly hold them up instead.

Glass and Waters weren't fast players but doubt many teams had the confidence to take our players on when those two were around. They had more physical presence between them than half our side does.

love the melts.

firstly, we lost narrowly to an up an about melbourne team, playing their third straight game at their home ground, while we've travelled across the country twice with less days break. we're alright, let's not get too dramatic here.

we lost the game for ourselves with our missed opportunities. plain & simple. which ****ing sucks, but we can do better.

our wet weather issues struck again - the moment it rains we drop our bundle, always happens, we gotta get better with this.

ruck's an issue for us, the sooner lycetts fit the better.

lethargic and below average effort..No one got out of 1st gear, just thought we would play 15mins of decent footy and win.

Basically gifted Richmond 4 points

Just finished watching the replay.

Nothing new to add much except that like others would have mentioned, the second half was awful to watch and that Richmond picked apart our defense well with smaller players who have pace. Didn't bomb the ball in high and play into McGovern and Barrass's hands.

Recognised also especially during the second half that on the list management needs for 2018 should smaller lock down defenders with pace who can create as well. Similar attributes to Andrew McGrath from the 2016 draft.

Happy to be proven wrong but I dont think we've had a genuine 180 cm small defender since Adam Carter a few years back and before that maybe Wirra.

Current crop of Nelson, Wellingham, Shepparton, Butler and company are all around about 6'2 or taller. Butler the most genuine negating defender of them.

Another thing I got really pissed off about is Josh Hill's effort to start the last quarter, tucked up in the pocket with Eagles and Richmond players guarding the square, in wet conditions, you'd think maybe he'd try and centre it to a dangerous spot. NUP went the dribble kick to a pack of players in the square. Stupid numpty.

Hope he got sprayed by Dunstall in The Dribble Files.

Frustrating loss because we had our opportunities to win but they weren't taken. They're the type of losses I hate most.

Can't put fault at the conditions but I hope next time we play in the wet we will learn from mistakes made. We haven't had a good chance to train in the wet during the off season and it's not just conditions that are tough. Ball gets water logged, heavy and slippery, need to be more aware with tackles etc.

Altogether the second half should be a great learning experience for the rest of the year
