When Byrnes was the best kick tonight it tells you all you need to know. Actually was probably top 5 for us and im usually not his biggest fan.

This club needs to stop prioritising all these runnings drills over pre season and actually focus on skills and ways to move the ball into the 50. Our running game isn't above anyone else's as far as I can see.

Played into Carlton's hands in the second half, nothing worked and when we did get something to work the next possession didn't. Clunky, clumsy through the midfield, dropped marks, very poor decisions. All that over and over.

Thought the defense wasn't too bad considering. Just too hard up forward without a key target to lean on,. Can't expect Sharman to play like last week every game.

Gee whiz, Hammer is a pretty awful key forward, seems to lose his ability to Mark as soon as he is forward of centre
I'm still not sold on him as a best 22 player. I didn't believe him as a defender, and while he can occasionally take a mark, I'm not sold on him as a forward. Does he play 100 games? I don't think he does.

Yeah agreed re Hill. That was a shocker. Worse than when he goes missing, this time he got the ball but he just butchered the kicks. Wasn't on the same page as the forwards and I found him super frustrating to watch.

Boxshall did great on Walsh. Sharman presented well. We just need some more class really, and poise. Hard to teach that, we need to trade for it.

What a cluster****.

No one on the field with a braincell between them
+ lack of skills and composure, the number of players fumbled, lost footing, kicks smothered, missed targets and direct turnovers really makes it a hard watch.. Can we just have 2 or 3 players in the middle who can handle the ball cleanly, was man against boys all over the ground.

Can someone give me some stats around average age and average games played for the 2 teams tonight? Try and paint a picture like based on our inexperience we weee always going to lose. Just to give me some perspective and make me feel good about the loss.

Alright had my rant time for some positives.

4 quarters into Pou looking forward to seeing him go further up the ground as his match fitness comes

Contrary to some other opinions thought Darcy Wilson was good

Jack Steele I thought was one of the guys trying to win it

Marshall fought hard all night

Wilkie after getting a bath in the first 40 mins shut curnow out of it

Definitely no excuses. We were poor and deserved to lose. Played the ground as poorly as we played the opposition. Big holes in the defence when we turned it over, which was often. V few looked to run into space or set up for a handball receive when they were down on numbers. If anything we looked more tired and static for most of the second half than them. When we needed an extra runner we had Collard instead of ZJones as the sub which always hard to understand.
Many howlers with the ball in hand didn’t help.
We need a competent extra tall at both ends that we don’t have on our list. There are a few in the state leagues and You’d hope we’re having a go in the mid-season draft.

Wonder how much culture we built after tonight? Or was there no more to build upon after last year's Carlton win? On another note, Langford would've been handy tonight... oh wait... that's the same note....

But really, expected a loss but hoped for the best. We had a big win last week and Carlton were crap. We tend not to back it up or bury teams who are down.

I don't want to blame it on Spuds game, or Maddie's match, or whatever else. As a professional club, we should be able to turn it on regardless of the occasion.

Carlton was average Af tonight, we shouldn't have lost that one.

Saints' best players: Webster and Byrnes in the 2nd, Pou in the 3rd, Sincs in the 4th

A few players had moments: Sharman, Owens, Phillipou, Sinclair, Stocker, Nas, McRae, but moments was all they were. No one was able to break through Carlton's pressure.

We stood around waiting for the ball to sit up or looking for the easy crumb, the players that did get it shat the bed and turned it over, we demand more bravery from our players.

Why take Higgins off?

Another Friday night marquee game at the G wasted. I hope Lyon looks at his coaching too, way too conservative.

Squandered that one..

Felt like the majority of their goals, especially early on, came from St K errors - broken tackles, too many defenders going up for the spoil, disposal turnovers etc

The second half was a putrid spectacle. The game was there to be won in the first 15 minutes of the third term but we weren't good enough. Again.

We kicked 3 goals in a half of football against a team with 3 blokes subbed off from injury.

It's an absolutely deplorable effort. Too often under Lyon we look utterly clueless. He says this mob is coachable, well WTF is he coaching them, because when we need to put speed on the game we just go around in circles. Bomb long, rinse, lather, repeat.

Said it on the game day thread, but Lyon had an absolute stinker. How many clearances in a row do you need to lose before you throw, NAS, Sincs, Ownes in the middle? Then when they completely clog up the game, we still refuse to put speed on the game.

How many times did we try and hit up a kick in the middle and create some overlap run? Just an insanely beige performance. Lyon was pantsed tonight, by one of the dumbest coaches in the comp.

We were out classes by a more experienced side. There in close work and handballing to create a lose was far better than ours. Because of that we spent too long being over reactionary and chasing.

We fumbled our way through the first half and couldn't find the space and time we had the week before. They shut down our 45° kicks all night consequently couldn't get the speed on the ball we wanted.

As a result we bombed it down the line where we were generally out marked. We had our chances but didn't have the composure to take them.

It's simple sit on Macrae and the Saints can't win a clearance. Steele is a nothing more than a gop these days and then we have kids in the middle nothing else.

Hard to pick our best, but there were plenty of players who had shockers or were well beaten.

We have a lot of weaknesses on our list that kids alone are not going to fix.
