Jeez the A-Leagues standard is a joke.
Heskey is treated like Richard Tambling over in the UK. But in Australia he is a BIG signing.
A-League clubs don't exactly have 50 million pounds to throw at a player.

You realize they are only 3 points from 3rd place, right?

I did not, which shows how relevant the A-League is. Last I heard they'd won one game all year.

Not a media bake but fitting with the United signing talk is Shane Smeltz a realistic target? I heard that we're doing the hard yards in putting together a decent enough bid to lure him over, would be a good get.

Very good player at A-League level, but he'll have trouble getting a game ahead of Messi when Adelaide sign him up next season.

It's a worse standard than English league 2 (4th division) football.

This has nothing to do with Port, but it was so laughably South Australian that I couldn't help but post it. Saw an article in the Rag today (don't judge, I was at my girlfriend's place waiting for her to wake up and I had nothing better to do) about how Adelaide Utd should attempt to attract a marquee player. Some of the names mentioned; John Terry, Frank Lampard, Rio Ferdinand, Andrea Pirlo. The first three have locked in places in probably the two biggest clubs in the biggest sporting league on the planet and Pirlo is arguably a top 10 player in the world playing for the biggest and best club in his home country, but sure, why wouldn't they take a MASSIVE paycut to come to a non-soccer country and play for a team that doesn't look like they'll even make the finals this year!

Actually not as crazy a suggestion as it sounds... Del Piero is just as big if not a bigger name than those 4 and just two seasons ago was playing for Juve. Maybe not this season but in a year or two Lampard and Terry will probably be moving on from Chelsea and Pirlo at 34 probably still has at least 3-4 years at the top level with the way he is playing. But once they look to move on why not offer them a handy retirement lifestyle down under I'd say the that Ferdinand would actually be a definite possibility far sooner than those though. He is basically a liability now in the Premier League and I can see United getting rid of him soon.

The MLS seems to snaffle these types.

who cares Adelaide United will never be relevant, the a-league has next to zero fans.

This is actually a grossly incorrect statement. The A-league is actually doing very well, particularly a few clubs like WSW, MVFC and SFC. Their crowds are consistently growing, and the code is getting more exposure by the year. They have a solid footprint, though it remains to be seen just how popular it will become. I think it will become Australia's summer sport along with cricket, especially if some clubs start spending big for some good players who are still at least in the late prime of their careers.

I remember when the A-league started, Adelaide united got around 4,000 to a match (more than the SANFL mind you!), these days though they have doubled that and their average is around 8-10,000. That is alot of growth over a 2-3 year period. A match between adelaide and sydney in 2011 got a crowd of 21,000, and in late 07 for the same fixture there was a crowd of 25,000. That's more than what Port have been pulling.

A League would have to be close to drawing more than the NRL these days?

I'm a casual observer of the A League, my 2 years living in the UK back in the day gave me a slight interest in Soccer which has probably waned, but to say that A League has no fans is clearly a silly statement. Don't think the AFL has a lot to worry about but the rise of WSW would have the the NRL clubs in the west a bit worried.

Adelaide United have been a massive underachiever in the A League. Should have at least 1 title by now. Coaches/boards/owners have come and gone, but the one guy who remains teflon is Michael Petrillo. Surely somebody has to question what he is doing?

lol keep telling yourself that. Adelaide United's crowds are trending backwards but hey you can clutch onto those two matches at Adelaide Oval that lots of people went along to for something to do.

You like those climate change people, cherry picking:

2005 - 06 10.947
2006 - 07 12, 167
2007 - 08 12.697
2008 - 09 11.712

just look at the stratospheric rise in support

Hey you know, you can clutch onto those two matches at Adelaide Oval that lots of people went along to for something to do. Or you can use them as inflating stats to prove me wrong...

Hide the decline!! So if you want to play that game, crowds are flat so yeah that a-league is really generating heaps of interest.

It's similar to the big bash, no one gave a flying **** about it. Once it made it's way from Fox to FTA, interest suddenly skyrocketed and so have attendance's.

It's all about exposure.

Just once I would like to do some exposure without getting arrested.

Maybe this FTA thing you speak of is my big chance.

The a-league have bigger average crowds than rugby league.

The Western Sydney Wanderers RBB (Red and Black Bloc) grand final day last April.

The club has encouraged our fans to march to the ground as well but not everyweek

WSW fans copied the Seattle Sounders fans and their March to the Match whose average crowds or 43k to 45k would rank them about 20th in the world for average crowds per game ie bigger than most UK, European, Brazilian, and Argentinian clubs. Their average crowds are almost double what the #2 club averages in th MLS. Listen to why majority owner Jo Roth says he bought the team - at approx 1;00 minute - that had failed twice and was playing in the minor leagues. Sound familar about soccer in Sydney and western sydney in particular???

And the Sounders fans probably copied somebody else.

That's going a bit far.

Brisbane, WSW and Melbourne Victory would probably fancy themselves against Fleetwood Town or Morecambe, just loudly.
