It was the ball of the game! Damn it!!

But, alas!, it wasn’t meant to be.

Still, Australia, take a bow.

Took it up to them in the end but like Fos Williams & John Cahill, I cannot be happy with losing
Be both proud and unhappy. That’s fair.

Oh my god... We had chances 🥺

a 31yo leftback who plies his trade with the bottom side in the Scottish Prem almost scored one of the greatest goals of all-time.

what a rollercoaster.

can’t help but think what this team could’ve achieved with even 1 or 2 blokes who are proper first teamers at the highest level.

Somehow, between the qualifiers and the second game of the WC, we figured out how to maintain shape defensively and press at the right moments. If you can do that you're in with a chance against anyone. I've hated the Arnie appointment since the minute he got the job. But hats off, what he achieved in this tournament is in many ways more impressive than Guus and '05-'06.

Was definitely more impressive than 06 considering the huge talent gap between the two squads.

As Boz alluded to with his “they played against Italy with 10 men for an hour [sic], this was 11 vee 11”, at least Arnold went for it.

And the African kids coming to Australia... But yeah imagine if wanganeens burgoynes ect running around.. allir allir at CB Selwood falling over in the penalty box 😉

Amazingly Allir Allir and Awer Mabil both came to Australia from the same refugee camp, to now reach the top levels at their respective sports.

The current World Cup squad had 3 players who came to Australia as refugees with South Sudanese origin in Thomas Deng, Garang Kuol, and Mabil, which is pretty incredible!

Telstra Plaza went off today - was such a great atmosphere.

I hope this world cup performance results in increased funding for football at junior levels. The academies are pretty good but they need more funding to get the top junior teams playing each other all over the country.

Agree, I hope albo was watching

I can't upload the video directly to here but here is a link to a video I shot prior to kickoff this morning.

For decades the Australian media and any shock jock have demonised the use of flares when used at domestic football matches - ironic given the use of flares at this world cup has been arguably the biggest positive talking point by the media to highlight the extreme passion the Australian public has for the world game.

I can handle Messi making a mess of the defence, he's done it against the best for 15+ years, but the Matt Ryan error is hard to take.

A worse error as Lucas Neil 16 years ago. Changed the whole tactics Arnie would have set up for at half time. But they didn't give up. Koul almost made a hero of himself.

Lets see what the administrators do to take advantage. The whole junior development, cost of kids playing the game etc have to be addressed to make the final 8 or better in future WCs.

Blacktown City FC produced 5 of the current squad, 3 came from Adelaide's northern suburbs. I saw the interview a few days ago on ABC News with the Blacktown City junior development coach and he was asked about junior development and kids dropping out at 12 or 13 and costs of playing the game.

He made an interesting point about the old AIS program. They gave out scholarships for whole sports programs, now they seem to give out general sports education scholarships to elite athletes rather than have a whole of sport scholarships program.

The AIS Football - men's program ran between 1981 and 2013. If you click on the various links at the page below you see the intake each year and links to which scholarship holders went to various tournaments, won various awards and played in the various WCs and its half the squad in 2006 and 2010 and only 7 in 2014. Those top end talented kids were given great development opportunities via those scholarships and got to play together for a couple of years.

In fairness, trying to coach Australia to a World Cup win is like trying to coach Gaza to an AFL premiership. Fos and John might have been a bit more pragmatic if that was their lot in life.

One of my best mates has been a coach/technical director developing young talent in SA for quite a few years. He's been adamant that the player quality coming through is very good in SA, but their development is stalling because there are not enough elite players in each state to play competitive games against each other on a weekly basis. Ideally in a perfect world you'd have the elite young prospects at the academies of all the A-League clubs, from under 13s right through under 18s, and they play a domestic competition against each other.

The state development squads come together in Coffs Harbour yearly for a play off tournament but 1 week of competitive matches pushing these kids in an entire season is not enough if you want to fast track the development of the young players. Of course, funding is a massive hurdle to making this happen. But if the power brokers are serious about making Australian football a powerhouse they would implement a similar styled scheme.

Fee costs for juniors is also an issue to a point but junior participation is pretty strong last I checked. And there are always ways around the fees - it is an excuse rather than an explanation imo.

Fair few well lubricated English infesting the bars of St Julian's here in Malta just now. Can hear the buggers from the 11th floor. Not sure if they're going to make it to half time. Mind you I didn't make it much past half time last night, the jet lag and the wine both kicked in at once. Old trick of mine, falling asleep with a wine glass in hand and not spilling any. Anyway I'm dreading wandering down to watch the fun and games tonight. Interesting earlier on in the day, in a smaller pub in a different part of town listening to a group of almost civilized Scousers discussing dodgy goal line calls over the years with a few older Germans. What's with bloody French fans though? Completely silent against Poland until one of theirs does something then one comes out with "oh he's a real Frenchman not like..." Righto, back to your Marine Le Pen buddy.
