Not bad, but Shaw is a walk-up started for the Crows next year. 3rd tall down back, and creates a lot of drive off half back. I wouldn't even be against seeing him on a wing

Full Backs:
Sam Shaw - One of the pleasant surprises of 2012, went from being a player who had potential but for whom injuries had him on the edge of being delisted to a walk up starter when fit.

Ben Rutten - A few were pretty harsh on Truck throughout the season and not without reason, his lack of pace is still a worry, but his efforts on Pavlich and Franklin proved he is still more than capable.

Andy Otten - His effort against Hawthorn was outstanding and we saw a glimpse of the Andy Otten that nearly won the rising star award, if he can continue this form he is in our best 22.

Half Backs:
Brodie Smith - Massive improver in 2012, is a massive kick of the ball and is capable of getting plenty of it and using it well.

Daniel Talia - Quickly becoming our best defender, destroyed forward after forward in 2012.

Brent Reilly - A player who has been much maligned throughout his career, however he enjoyed a career best year in 2012 playing as an intercept/rebound defender. One of our most important players.

Centres:
David MacKay - Showed why he is so highly rated by the club often in 2012, many would love for him to get some more of the ball as he has elite skills.

Scott Thompson - Was absolutely dominant in 2012 and is now getting help from his younger fellow midfielders.

Rory Sloane - Enjoyed a breakout year in 2012 and is quickly becoming one of our most important players. Unfortunately will be forever overshadowed by Dangerfield.

Half Forwards:
Bernie Vince - A real 'big game' player, always seems to step up when it counts and is still a valuable member of the side. Although is unlikely to ever recapture his 2009 form.

Taylor Walker - Probably the second most improved player in the side in 2012, is more than capable of winning a coleman and kicking 100+ goals in a season if he can keep out of the MRP's sights.

Jared Petrenko - Had an excellent first half of 2012 but tailed off badly towards the end of the year, needs to work on his confidence but I believe a few have been a bit too harsh and I think he has alot to offer.

Full Forwards:
Mathew Wright - Had an excellent 2012 although was completely overshadowed by other improving players. Is capable of stepping it up again in 2013.

Josh Jenkins - With the likely departure of Kurt Tippett, the role of back up ruckman and full forward will fall to Shawn McKernan and Jenkins. Jenkins certainly has the inside track on this role based on 2012 form although he needs to work on his ruck work over the summer.

Jason Porplyzia - Showed throughout the finals and 2012 in general why he is so important to the side, his kicking is elite and is capable of kicking multiple goals.

Followers:
Sam Jacobs - An absolute standout year from Jacobs means he has an iron grip on the Crows number 1 ruckman spot.

Patrick Dangerfield - An explosive year from Danger has seen him move from part time midfielder and half forward to permanent, goal-kicking midfielder.

Nathan van Berlo - The captain had a good 2012, often being tasked with stopping the oppositions best midfielder and often succeeding in limiting their influence.

Interchange:
Brad Crouch - A ready made AFL player, Crouch had an outstanding year in the SANFL for an 17-18 year old, is a clearance machine who has been touted as a second Dangerfield.

Lewis Johnston - Had an outstanding year in the SANFL kicking 50+ goals for North playing as their centre-half forward. Was unlucky to not receive more games in 2012 however the likely departure of Tippett will open up more opportunity for Lewis.

Richard Douglas - Douglas had a decent year in 2012 although he needs to get a little more of the ball and use it better. His tackling was good in 2012.

Ricky Henderson - Reinvented as a half-back in 2012, Henderson has shown alot of improvement, providing dash for the backline. Was pleased that he showed more hardness in 2012.

Emergencies:
Shawn McKernan - The low levels of the Crows ruck and KPF stocks will ensure that Smack is always in the picture for getting a game. Need to work on his field play and discipline.

Tom Lynch - Was unlucky to not get a few more games in 2012, could benefit from playing more across half-back rather than as a third forward when in the Crows side in my opinion.

Ian Callinan - Is an excellent player against not-so-good sides, but too often goes missing in big games to command a first choice spot. Will be retained on the rookie list for a third year.

Jarryd Lyons - Had an outstanding year in 2012 in the SANFL and showed alot at AFL level. In my opinion should be on of the first to be considered if any midfielder should be out of the side.

Three players that are more or less 'newbies' is probably one too many but I think these guys are ready to go and we can't keep them out for much longer. Brown could go a long way to cementing a spot with a good performance in the SANFL GF. Lyons should probably be the first picked of the under 20 game brigade at this point.

Johncock has slowed up considerably this season and it seems the remainder of his career will be played up forward/off the bench. I can see him and Callinan being overtaken by Crouch and Lyons in the team.

Not easy to juggle players given so many positions are relatively interchangeable but tried to select a team based a bit on the future. So a few spots are based on maybe 2014 depending how much of a run they get next year. Also used the Crows website and Noble's comments for some inside recruiting thoughts on positions. The interchange is basically being used to rotate onball players - no reflection on their ability.

Most of the side picks itself. Only factors are Tippett (prob gone), Johncock (Can he push through another PS), Doughty, Pets and Callinan who were shown up to various degrees as not finals players. If the club can manage their players as they have this season then there are going to be some who really push up. Crouch is an obvious selection, after that Otten and Hendo are likely starters and give more than Stiffy or Pets for that matter. Just too hard atm. Come back to this in a months time when the hurt of last week has faded a bit more.

That is the side I'd go with. IMO that is our best 22. I'm hoping Tippett stays, because if he leaves I think that will dent our premiership ambitions MASSIVELY for 2013.
I believe the defence should stay the same as 2012, with the only change being D-Mac staying at halfback permantly.
The centre line will HOPEFULLY have 2 new additions in Brad Crouch and Brodie Martin. Crocuh playing Midfield most of the time and Martin playing a bit of everywhere. Martin needs gametime next season because I really don't want us to lose him. Anyoe remember his debut against the Saints a few years back? His pace was blistering, and he kicks goals.
Forward line will obviously depend on Tippett's future. If he does leave the obvious replacement is Jenkins. Johnston is behind JJ IMO so might find it hard to crack the side again next year. I believe Callinan MUST stay in our side. We all know how good he can be and he didn't rip it up every week for Centrals for nothing. Jared Petrenko, after his finish to the season, isn't in my best 22. He needs to work on his kicking because it was appalling at times. His set-shot kicking for goal is depressing and he never kicks them.

Apart from that the side will be fairly similar to this season, with a couple of minor changes.​

Omitted because I had to make the hard decisions- Vince, not consistent enough, stopping a lyons from getting a game, would rather trial the latter, Crouch, a gun, but not gun enough, will get a few games during the year, Callinan, sorry, competing against wright, porps, riley, lyons, doesnt offer much more up forward and not enough of a tank to do midfield unlike the aforementioned guys, Petrenko, lost forward line spot, can come in down back in place of otten if the opposition has small nippy forwards.

Yes Tambo, pace, run, tackling, makes us a better running and pressuring side.

Most AFL teams have an average of 8 injuries per year, so Vince, Crouch, Callinan, Petrenko will get a go then, plus Johnstone, Kerridge, Brown, Jaensch & Thompson.

Last years draftees will mostly be back in the SANFL again, which is good, let their bodies mature before they get put in the meat grinder.

mackay broke out this year, was a gun for us out of HB, first person to give us good attacking drive from that position since goodwin and mcleod finished up.

Wasn't really ever playing a major shut down role, his main role was to run the ball out of our defense and deliver forward. Is the kind of player who will rarely break 25 possessions, but really only needs 15 to be damaging. If he can stay fit though across the preseason, look for him to have a massive 2013.
