Ok so we've seen the preseason and won the cup, now who do we play round 1???

For mine:

Toovey, Tarrant, Buckley
Shaw, Reid, O'Brien
Thomas, Pendles, Sidebottom
Beams, Cloke, Didak
Krakouer, Dawes, Blair

Jolly, Swan, Ball

Wellingham, Johnson, Brown SUB: Davis

Apologies to Caf, love him but he was poor tonight. He and Blair are the ones walking the tightrope. Obviously it will be out of Keefe and Buckley as to who takes Maxwell's position. Goldsack looks too underdone. I'd like to see Buckley get a shot, but Keefe would be just as likely.

Yeah, I think this is how we'll line up if Maxy doesn't come up. I've been really impressed by Buckley in the NAB.

Goldy, Blair and Macaffer are the 3 most vulnerable from our GF team of last year. Goldy will start the year in the VFL to get some match conditioning. Krak is definitely best 22, so he replaces the underdone Goldy.

I'm a bit skeptical about Leon in the backline come the real season but I'm positive Mick will play him, probably in favour of Macaffer, but maybe in place of Blair as well.

Re: Round One team

Macaffer is a certain starter for round 1 IMO.

A medium forward option who plays tall and small is another dimension to our forward line and something we don't really have.

Re: Round One team

My side on pre season form -

B : Shaw Keefe Toovey
HB: O'Brien Reid Davis
C: Thomas Pendlebury Sidebottom
HF: Didak Cloke Wellingham
F: Krakouer Dawes Blair
FOLL: Jolly Swan Ball
INTER: Johnson, Beams, Brown
SUB: Tarrant

McCaffer hasn't really hit peak form during the NAB cup, but will be back in the side few rounds in and Buckley really stiff to miss out. Has been impressivethis preseason, a real chance to play a fair bit of senior footy this year though.

Re: Round One team

Mate, if you honestly believe Tarrant is going to be the sub and Keeffe will play at full back you are kidding yourself.

Keeffe has been impressive but I doubt he will play round 1.

Also, the sub is most likely going to be a running type player- not a tall.

Re: Round One team

You've got rocks in your head if you think Macaffer will be dropped. Strong contested player who is our only real defensive forward option. Buckley needs to keep doing what he is doing but still hasn't shown enough IMO to claim a spot. Davis will get a game ahead of him based on runs on the board and flexibility. Having said that, if they choose to make Leon the sub then that makes room for buckley. Leon however is a confidence player and i don't think he will have as much impact only playing for just over a quarter.

I think Johnson will be the sub based on the fact that he has speed, is able to break lines and has shut down ability.

Tooves--Tarrant--O'Brien
--Shaw---Reid---Davis--
Wellingham-Swan-Thomas
--Didak--Cloke--Krakouer
--Macaffer-Dawes-Beams

Foll: Jolly-Pendles-Ball

Int: Sidebottom, Blair, Brown
Sub: Johnson

Re: Round One team

B: Toovey Tarrant Shaw
HB: Harry Reid Johnson
C: Thomas Ball Wellingham
HF: Beams Cloke Didak
FF: Krakouer Dawes Macaffer
Foll: Jolly Swan Pendlebury

I/C: Brown, Sidebottom, Blair Sub: Davis

Emergency: J-Mac, Buckley Keeffe

Davis' creativity and explosiveness to play across half-back or in attack could be a real weapon as the sub. Also, just prefer Johnson as a more complete "defensive" player than Davis. If not Davis, Johnson/Macaffer may be the subs for round 1. I expect the sub to be "rotated" between the squad weekly.

I fully expect Macaffer to line-up in round 1 as when you look at our forward line, we have no other genuine medium marking option.

Guys like Goldsack and Dick won't be too far away from squeezing into the extended squad of 25 and push for senior selections.

Again, our depth is very good.

Re: Round One team

B: Alan Toovey Chris Tarrant Heath Shaw
HB: Ben Johnson Ben Reid Harry O'Brien
CEN: Sharrod Wellingham Dane Swan Dale Thomas
HF: Alan Didak Travis Cloke Dayne Beams
F: Leigh Brown Chris Dawes Andrew Krakouer
FOLL: Darren Jolly Luke Ball Scott Pendlebury
BENCH: Steele Sidebottom Jarryd Blair Lachlan Keeffe
22nd man: Leon Davis
EMG: John McCarthy Brent Macaffer Simon Buckley

The big question now is if we play or don't play Macaffer. Structurally without him it does make it harder, no doubt. But all preseason he has looked a couple of steps slower and probably does need some time at the VFL to get his game back up to 2010 standard. Giving him a month at VFL level as a midfielder might just work him back into fitness.

The other note I'd add to this is I would only play Jarryd Blair as a midfielder. In the midfield he can get 20 touches, but up forward isn't consistant enough.

Keeffe has been good enough and would be my choice as Maxwell replacement.

Davis I don't like having to play, but with Macaffer out and some gaps in the backline he is the sub purely for the flexibility he can give this team off the bench. Coming out of defense while his performance last night was great as well as the weeks before, he won't have it on a string like that this season and I think like Buckley his decision making will get exposed which does make me nervous about him playing back. But for now is the least bad 22nd man based on form and more so the flexible fwd/back/mid who can bring energy into the game.

McCarthy looks solid, not best 22, but should get games and isn't a bad choice.

Goldsack just isn't ready yet and needs to put his weight back on. I'm confident by midseason he will be pushing for a position in this team again.

Dick needs VFL game time first.

Don't like listing Buckley as an EMG. But will get games at some point unfortunately. I'd actually like Buckey to play on a forward flank much more than down back. His poor decision making would be less exposed there I feel. With the ball down back he is just too much of a liability kicking it to the opposition too often.

Re: Round One team

I really don't like the idea of having Tarrant, Reid and Keeffe as 3 talls in the backline. It robs us of a running player.

I know we had planned on playing Brown, Reid and Tarrant but that was with the notion of Tarrant swinging between defence and attack.

I don't think Keeffe can do that just yet and playing at FB at senior level is much different to NAB Cup so Tarrant will be required to hold down FB.

Personally, unfortunately for Keeffe, he probably is an emergency and Macaffer plays.

Re: Round One team

I want Buckley and McCarthy in there. They add something. Admittedly their bad is pretty average, but their good is very good. Against a team that has not much of an attack (Port) we can afford more attack minded players.

Goldsack was incredibly rusty last night, I hope he plays VFL next week.

Re: Round One team

Outs from the premiership 22: Maxwell (if unavailable), Goldsack, Nate Brown (injured), Macaffer
Ins: Krakeour, Davis, Buckley, Tarrant

FB: Toovey, Tarrant, O'Brien
HB: Shaw, Reid, Buckley
C: Wellingham, Thomas, Swan
HF: Krakeour, Cloke, Beams
FF: L.Brown, Dawes, Sidebottom
Fol: Jolly, Pendlebury, Ball
Int: Blair, Davis, Didak
Sub: Johnson

Tough to leave out Caff. I know his importance to the side when fully fit but he looks to need a few more miles in his legs given he missed a large chunk of the pre-season. Didak has also missed a large chunk of the pre-season and I don't think we can afford to take in 2 underdone players, especially with the reduced interchange.

Re: Round One team

B. Toovey Tarrant O'Brien
HB. Shaw Reid Davis
C. Thomas Pendlebury Wellingham
HF. Didak Cloke Krakouer
F. Sidebottom Dawes Beams
R. Jolly Swan Ball
I. Brown Johnson Blair
S. Macaffer
E. Buckley Keeffe Goldsack

Re: Round One team

I'd say:

FB: Harry, Tarrant, Toovey
HB: Shaw, Reid, Leon
C: Wellingham, Pendlebury, Thomas
HF: Krakouer, Cloke, Sidebottom
FF: Blair, Dawes, Didak
Foll: Jolly, Swan, Ball

Int: Beams, Leeroy, Macaffer
Sub: Johnson

Buckley is close, and I'd argue that it wouldn't be a bad game to play Keefe and test him in the real stuff.

God this is hard, which is a good sign for the strength of our side. If Maccaffer isn't right fitness wise for round 1 then I think Bay Pie's side is about right. If he is right I'd slot him in, move Johnson to the back flank and make Buckley an emergency.

Re: Round One team

We will have 19 premiership players in contention (Goldsack, Brown and Maxwell the ones missing).

So pick those 19, add Leon, add Tarrant and add Krakouer, and you have the team IMO.

So it would look something like this;

B: Toovey, Tarrant, O'Brien
HB: Shaw, Reid, Davis
C: Beams, Swan, Thomas
HF: Didak, Cloke, MaCaffer
F: Sidebottom, Dawes, Krakouer
Foll: Jolly, Pendlebury, Ball
Int: Blair, Wellingham, Brown
Sub: Johnson

I think that's right.:confused::o

Krakouer and Tarrant deserve a crack at round 1, if MaCaffer isn't fit, then bring in Buckley, play him as a defensive wingman and move Beams to half forward.:)

Re: Round One team

I cant believe people naming Buckley in the first game .....as we all know that he butchers the ball.

And I was impressed by Blair and Beams form in the game against Essendon. They are certain starters... On the other hand Macaf has been hopeless all year so far. Forget last year's form, he has been long enough to know that he should be kicking a couple of goals each game.

And one thing is for sure. Keeffe wont be sitting on a bench all day. He will be playing the whole game at either senior or reserves level. He has too much to learn about football to spend his time sitting on the pine..

You know he butchers the ball you mean. I did not see that happen last night or last week. I thought he was one of our best players. Criticism is fine when it is deserved but not when it is given irrespective of the player's performance. Neither Keefe or Blair will get a game on the strength of last night's performance, though Blair will not be judged purely on one game.
