Recommitted Rowan Marshall [OOC 2027] - Requested Trade to Geelong, didn't get done

Rucks these days is a minor position, especially with the rule change coming in next year. This years first is more than reasonable for a 30 year old ruckman next year.

Oh Clyde says it’s more than reasonable. I guess we better make the trade then

Mackie said no one has approached him from Saints/Blues about getting any Cats players through trade and he isn’t trading anyone who hasn’t asked so no idea why Saints fans keep bringing him up?
Is it just some fan fantasy?

He hasn’t said he wants to go. Saints haven’t asked for him.
Whole of trade week is a fan fantasy

Well youre either looking for a fair deal or you're looking to keep him because Geelong wont do a trade for any other type of deal.
Fair enough. Personally I think there's a time to be idealistic and a time to be pragmatic, but you guys aren't as hard up for success as us so I can understand you not wanting to do whatever it takes.

I think Marshall would make Geelong a lot harder to beat and he's be a good fit for the club culture and an on-field talisman - Cats players and fans would love him, this is not a Jade Gresham or even a Josh Battle situation. Ixm happy enough about it because I admire Geelong, but I know lots of Saints fans absolutely hate the Cats and are upset about making them still stronger.

We're obviously in a different phase at St Kilda, evidenced by us throwing crazy salaries at players we think will get us into the top 4. I like our approach but I suppose its specific to a less popular less successful club. No right or wrong, different strokes for different folks.

Replacing a top player for St Kilda isn't as simple as it is for clubs like Geelong or Collingwood right now. We have to pay through the nose because we can't offer the sell out blockbuster games, the country lifestyle, the go home factor or the prestige. We have had a very long list of genuine difference makers turn us down, so its not like we can just let our best players go and then go and simply pick up a Dangerfield from Adelaide or a Petracca from Melbourne for example. That's worth Mackie having in mind when negotiating with us.

Some Cats posters seem to think that Marshall won't make the difference to success or not for Geelong which again is fair enough. In that context, what do you think Geelong's interest in the trade is? Is this just Marshall exploring options and you guys being happy to help, like us with someone like Dan Butler? Do the club rate him but just think at his age its not justifiable to spend too much on him? Or are they just tightarses? Surely they aren't trying to "win" the trade?

Seems like Marshall's best option would be to burn his bridges and stamp his feet until he gets us to rip up his contract and let him go for unders if he does want to move. He's not as necessary to us as Cal Wilkie anymore so that might work. Not sure he's that type of guy though.

For us, there's a small chance that we'd be charitable to him, though the optics of being seen to give a fan favourite away for sweeties would go down pretty badly with most of us after all the tough talk from the club, especially as so many Saints fans feel Geelong have too much their own way already.

Feels like Marshall might be a Saint a little while longer to me.

What i think is a charitable deal: Marshall for a 2025 1RDP and a 2026/7 2RDP or Marshall and a pick for 2026/7 1RDP and 2025 draft steak knives

What I think is a fair deal: Marshall and a draft pick for SDK or Marshall for a 2025 1RDP & 2026 2RDP

What I think is a deal worthy of a club like St Kilda losing a fan favourite and experienced senior player, one of the best modern ruck rovers today and on field leader: Marshall for SDK and 2025 draft steak knives or Marshall for 2026/7 1RDP and 2025 draft steak knives

I personally see Marshall as a player who would improve a gap for us, but isn't a critical need in an "OMFG we are so desperate for him we'll pay any price you say, just get him" way.

It would be like say SDK for you guys. You don't really have that big 200cm style KPD apart from Howard - Wilkie and JSOS are third tall size, Caminiti and Schoenmakers are mid 190cm - so SDK absolutely fills a gap in your list.

But if Geelong demanded "a deal worthy of a club losing a contracted player and making our opponents stronger" like two Top 10 picks or something, you'd probably walk away and just back yourselves to get by with your existing setup.

You'd like him and he'd be good for you, but not at any price we set.

Because youre saying you wont trade him except for a price you know there is no chance the other club will pay. Ergo any discussion is a waste of time. Just be honest about it it’s not that hard. St kildas communication (and not just on this trade) is really disjointed.
He is a contracted player we stated very clearly from the beginning we are only interested in next years first round pick and have no interest in this year’s draft , this is buy no means a unreasonable price to ask i think most reasonable people would agree on this for Marshall , the fact that you guys don’t want to trade a future pick because you have other plans for it is not our problem, if you were unwilling to trade future picks knowing that’s what st Kilda wanted then you should not have pursued Marshall this off season

Yeah I’m sure he’s a solid player but in all the Cats games I’ve watched he hasn’t really jumped out at me.

He’s a 200cm+, 24 year old lock down key defender who didn’t have a single goal kicked on him in this year’s finals.

Not the kind of player who will jump out at you until you realise the opposition FF had a quiet game.

Agree from the bits I’ve seen off him he looks a average player , completely lost in the ruck, has potential as a defender, Geelong people talk about him as if going to be a star I don’t see it personally
As a lock down key defender he's a walk up start 250+ gamer and likely all Australian. When played as an actual full back on a key forward he has basically the lowest contest loss rate going.

His problem is he's been rucking on and off and has also been asked to play loose which he's not as good at.

That's not true, he would of played on Logan Morris or Ty Gallop who both kicked a goal in the games played against Geelong.

I just checked and Logan Morris kicked a goal each of those games.

Jack Henry played on Morris in both finals.

SDK played on Gallop who was goalless in the QF and GF, and played on Chol in the prelim who kicked one goal, when SDK was on the bench in the last quarter.

Morris' goal in the qualifier was actually against COS. Jack may have been on the bench at the time.
