Recommitted Rowan Marshall [OOC 2027] - Requested Trade to Geelong, didn't get done

Turns out this board was a really good gauge.

Nobody (except Damien Barrett) ever thought a sh1tty F1 this year was getting it done
Plenty of Cats said 19 and F2 is a high as Geelong would go
Plenty of Saints said F1 was the minimum (and probably still not enough)
Both were right

My question is, if we could all see this, what on Earth was Marshall's management group thinking telling him to go public whith this request? They mast have got some indication that one side would give. I am genuinely curious which one

From our end, we have said no all the way along. Did Geelong give some promise to Marshall they would get it done? If so, its pretty ordinary to wait until the last minute to up the offer from a week ago. That leaves no space for further dialogue. Genuinely pretty sh1tty to get a contracted player to nominate, then wait to the last minute trying to 'win' the deal. If he is contracted either pay up (like we did with Flanders or Sydney did with Curnow) of F off (like Hawthorn with Merrett or you Geelong with both Curnow and Marshall)

IMO clubs really need to stop trying to pay a 'fair price' for contracted players. If you chase one then pay up

You're making assumptions on behalf of people when none of us plebs know what is being said in boardrooms or clubrooms.
You can't make assumptions based on that.

Will be very interesting to see how Rowan takes it.

We need midfielders more than we need marshall which is why we wouldn't trade the future 1st. You can only judge that result after next years trade period.
Very true. So if that is the case, the strategy for Curnow and Marshall.wpuld seem a bit off the mark?

Doesn't matter how he takes it. Shouldn't sign contracts, take front loaded portions and 50k bonuses, if he wants to leave.

Won't get an argument from me, you sign a long term deal you can't whinge when you get held to it..

Well we got a mid. And none we're targeting are available this year.
So you're going to try when players are interested in your club aren't you?

Just like Aleer and Merrett it doesn't guarantee it happens.

Marshall is a professional and a good bloke. He will be all in next year.
He was contracted and was told it probably wouldn't happen so he won't be that disapointed.
I think Mackie misread the situation and thought StKilda were bluffing

Good luck actually making a prelim, let alone grand final again for the first time in 16 seasons.

Geelong has stayed contending by not making desperate overpayment for B graders. St Kilda's record speaks for itself.

Mr Hiss

I think the Merrett and Marshall news is good for the AFL landscape.

ie Bottom 10 teams key contracted players being "whined" and dined by top 4 teams who then don't follow through with equivalent trade value being rebuffed.

Player managers will need to better balance length of contract given the inflation being offered to traded/free agent players.
Agree.

Also fix the bid situation on draft day.

Pick 5 is fast becoming an outside top 10 pick.

Shame for Marshall but Cats aren't dumb.

Based on his interview he gave that's not the case at all.
Saints didn't want a bar of it unless Cats way overpaid and they were never going to.

Agreed. NWM signed a two year deal. These managers luke their sign on bonuses and 4% then want a double dip after half the contract.
About time clubs took back a bit of control of contracted players.

It was a big win for clubs today, players lost out big time.
Can't wait to see players ask for contract rule changes now...they'll be fuming.

Correct, Saints & Geelong both come out ok, Saints have lost a little bit of respect at the trade table and have burnt the bridge with Rowan but otherwise we came to the party but SOS had wet himself and had to go home
This is so predictable and pathetic. Lost respect lol.

You did not come to the party. You thought you'd throw any old tat our way and get us to break our contract with Marshall.

You weren't serious, just like the Bulldogs, or you undervalued Marshall. Either way, just wasting your time.

We showed respect to the Gold Coast for an in-contract player we wanted. We showed respect to West Coast for an in-contract player we wanted.

Next time, just show respect. We might not be in a grand final but the guy you wanted was worth more.

The premiers just got a ruck, a key forward, will replace Starcevich with Doedee and will get a top 5 player again from their academy.

Marshall isn't bridging the gap they've widened in the last 2 weeks.

If they didn't want this years pick then I am happy we moved on. Next year and 2027-28 picks needed to be kept to make plays at Butters or Walsh.
I doubt there's many other outcomes than a brisbane-suns gf to be honest
