Greg Swan just said that 100% Goddard was NOT coming to Carlton. He said that St Kilda stated that he was not available or to be discussed.

Then it must be true!! I'm really glad Swanny has cleared this up.

I also remember Voss saying they weren't interested in Fevola, "never were" and then amazingly who traded for Fev?

The problem with trade week, especially so early on is almost every club is not telling the media their intentions and what is really going on. I'm not saying it's a done deal that has been reported but let's just say it's not over either.

It may be one thing to hear it from us but it's another thing to hear it from them.

This is true, but at the end of the day Saints won't want to lose Goddard, it will be a case of Goddard telling them he wants out. Trade him now or next year when free agency is in. Also if the club is making bold statements like this it will increase the offer/deal. Big deals are complicated and I put it to you if you were in there place (Blues and Saints) if it was going to happen. Would you keep it quiet and get the best deal possible or make it even worse by broadcasting it and spending time fielding questions from media/other clubs. Like I said, let's wait and see.

I love that Fremantle supporters are acting like it's a hassle that Clark and Bower want to go home. It's almost like Carlton and Brisbane should be doing them a favour to strengthen their list. Or the Ghost Of Trades Past might be haunting them. Since we have pick 44, a reported offer of pick 38 in this draft isn't a very enticing offer for Bower. We can return the favour and take them to mediation.

I think we'd be better served to try and change our 1sts.
If they bit, we'd kill two birds with one stone by making room on our list without the expense of adding another player.
We then upgrade Curnow along with Tuohy and have a shot at some mature aged KPP, arookies.

Have honestly lost all respect for Bower.

Has been our #1 CHB in the past few years. Has an injury prone season this year, which saw others keep their spot ahead of him in the backline due to good form, and so he packs up his bags and asks for a trade. My gosh HTFU, grow some balls, and earn your spot back. Grigg might want to read this post, too.

Disagree he should of been in the side instead of Davies, given he couldn't beat him he clearly realizes we don't rate him so fair enough he wants to get a chance.

I really rate him and will see it is a massive failure if trade hm.

Bower's injuries mean we won't get much for him, and his upside if he's largely injury-free in 2012 and beyond is way more than what we'll get for him in 2011.

If we can't convince him to stay, how keen is he to put himself into the draft if a trade can't get done?

I say high go to gold coast or gws and be guaranteed a career.

If St. Kilda are looking to clear room in their salary cap, why would the be taking 2/3 players as well as a pick in exchange?

I made exactly the same point... and I used example figures of salaries as well to back me up, but people just overlooked it.

If St Kilda was to want to free up salary cap space, then they would need to get rid of 2 high earners and replace them with between 3-4 base salary earners who are reasonable quality.

They know their window is on the close with some of their stars getting towards 30 and over and that they might be able to wedge it open for a couple of extra years by getting in a couple 23-26 year old players to compensate for the guys they lose.

However, getting in 3-4 good players will set them back by 12 months as they have to work to integrate them into the side.

Also, if I was St Kilda, I would be tempted to start a rebuild now rather than later after seeing whats happened with the Port Shower, the Crowbots and the Paddlepops. If they could snag a couple of decent youngsters this year and next, then they would be in a better position for when Roo and a few of the other older players call it a day.

To this end, they would be looking at trading with GC17 and GWS for picks for this year and compo picks for next year. Either way, they wont be trading for established players, unless they are up to spec with skills required and experience... and come dirt cheap to boot.

We paid unders for Judd by keeping pick one.

Only in hindsight. Not our fault WCE picked spuds. :p Were WCE to have picked someone good like Dangerfield|Rioli|Harry Taylor instead of Masten and Whitecross instead of Notte.

you'd say Kennedy, Taylor, Whitecross was a fairly amicable swap for Judd. 3 10 year players for the 2010 Brownlow Medal...

Setanta asked for a trade last year and no body was interested, now is a year older so not sure who will take him on now. Hope he gets a chance but will probably be delisted if nobody wants him.

Has a cult following on here but playing 8 games a season isn't enough to justify a spot on the list when Hampson & Mitchell are jostling for the forward-ruckman gig.

Longevity won't attract much interest but could get a gig at GWS for, say, pick 60.

Agree, the picks and player we gave up was a very fair deal. WCE wasted their masten and notte picks.

But no way did we pay unders.

I find it slightly crazy that we havent endeavoured to hang on to Setanta and Bower due to our lack of KPP depth.

Hopefully the club knows both are shot in the body otherwise it is poor list mgmt.

We are short on talls are are offloading Bower and Setanta, just great.

Hampson, Warnock, Mitchell, Waite, Jamison and Kruezer have all had extended injuries. Waite is the only mature KPF on our list, everything else is just hope.

And when has Jamo completed a season.

I understand both Bower and Setanta are sicknotes themselves but unless we find a better option, you dont give em up. Bower could be on the way back with one full pre-season after getting himself back on the park this year.

I mean Levi, Dare, Austin...c'mon, Bower is worth paying him a decent contract and showing him we want him.

Not much we can do about them wanting to leave.
I'm sure we've done all we could. They just haven't had the game time.

Walker and Thornton last year, Setanta and Bower this year. For three of them, they are talls and we need tall depth.

Something has gone wrong in terms of managing their expectations, or their bodies are screwed.

Nothing really good about two players wanting out each year.

Regarding Setanta, I've heard that a trade will only occur if we are given a deal that satisfies us. O'hAilpin and Carlton are happy to continue working together if there isn't a beneficial deal. On the other hand, I've also heard that Bower is one average offer away from being gone.

As has been said, don't shoot the messenger.

That's what happens when you become a good side with depth. Some people would prefer to move, usually get more coin and be more assured of a week to week game. See Prismall, Laidler, Mumford at Geelong.

What has Mitchell done to be jostling for anything? Has barely played a VFL game yet

If a player requests a trade the club has to try to accommodate them. If no trade occurs you work on mending fences. Has worked well with Walker & Thornton.

At the end of the day players want to play AFL football, not VFL/SANFL/WAFL. The reality is, there are only 22 spots in every team & 40+ players vying for those spots.

Bower has far more talent and potential than Davies. I think we've blown this one, we should've played Bower instead of Davies when we had the chance, now we may lose him.

TBH I would prefer if it was Davies asking to leave for more opportunity than Bower. Davies has shown he can shut down a forward, but has no impact on any game (apart from costing us against WCE) Bower has the ability to shut down his opponent and backs himself to provide drive out of the backline and set up attacks.

He did the job on Buddy Franklin when he was fit and firing, if we can get a full preseason into him and he stays injury free he would be an asset to the team and TBH Davies would not have a hope in hell of shutting down a guy like Franklin. Bower was forced to play on the top 2 forwards when we lacked KPD talent, with Jamison and Hendo back there now, he could take the third tall EASILY. He provides run out of defence similar to Harry'O but minus the bomb goals from outside 50.

We drafted him with pick 20 in 2005 with plans for our future but now all that planning seems to be getting flushed down the toilet. We have 2 players from the 2006 draft (Austin will be gone) and only 1 player from 2005 what did we finish last in those years for??? Of course we got Gibbs and Murphy, but 2 gun players out of all those DPs is disappointing to say the least. I feel we grabbed Austin to make Gibbs feel more comfortable, it was clear to me a couple years ago that the guy was just not up to it. Bower is one of the picks that has shown he IS up to it and IMO we are making a mistake letting him go.

We have to trust the CFC for the info they have on the players.

Davies is a 2013 player and onwards. I don't think he was quite ready for this year just yet, but injury situations with Russell and Bower may have forced our hand somewhat.
He's a great kid and will repay the coaches and the fans for their trust.

Excellent post mate. Bower is a talented defender with an attacking, running style that is perfect for the modern game and complements the rest of our backline. Please get yourself injury free and stay, Paul. We would get massive unders if we traded him now.
