If you are the man-on -the-mark, once play on is called, run as fast as you can straight at the man with the ball.

Why allow them 2secs more to make a decision??

Watching the man on the mark just stand there and look at the man with the ball, shits me to tears.

For example, Hawthorn's game plan relies on teams not chasing them down.

Discuss.

Great idea, until the player simply side-steps and plays on around you

General play, I disagree, as mentioned above it'd be easy to sidestep it.

From a kick in however, I never understand why they don't just sprint towards them. The player with the ball will still have to do a dinky kick to themselves which can be very awkward with pressure, but often you see the person on the mark just waltz in providing little to no pressure.

Sometimes they can't hear the ump, but yeah i'd think the coaches would want all players to apply a bit more pressure than what some do currently.

crap

you can run at the man without fully committing to put pressure on him without risking getting side stepped, you must be a ruckman:p

Not if you run "as fast as you can" like the OP said ;)

I think they could run in and close the gap at least. Forces the player with the ball to kick or handpass immediately.

Yeah, I reckon we hear the ump call play on before the man on the mark does. They are also very paranoid about giving away 50 by overstepping the mark, hence the delay.

Like most posters have already stated in this thread by running fast straight at them makes it very easy to side step and get around you. Ridiculous post

You need to jog up to them keeping on the balls of your feet, that's how you are taught to tackle in Rugby so they can't get past you.

depends on the guy with the ball. if it's cyril rioli then no, he'll just sidestep straight around you....

but if the bloke is still back pedalling then yeah that's a no brainer, but you often so them in this situation let them get steady, balance and deliver....

i do think guys on the mark should put a bit more pressure on them when the play on is called, but just running straight at them gung ho is probably not the percantage play.

Exactly, it drives me nuts when it is called play on & all the opposition players just stand there doing nothing, giving the player time to pass the ball to his team mate. FFS, run at him & force them to get rid of it quickly.

Not full pelt but it's always bugged me a bit that they don't hunt them down. 2-3 meters could be gained quickly and it takes a low trajectory pass out of the equation. They can prop then.

Not hearing the ump would be a valid reason. I imagine it's pretty noisy out there

Because usually when they take to long to kick it is because they have no forward options and they will be forced to kick it back. When you are the man on the mark you have almost no way of knowing if this is the case because you have to focus on the man kicking. If when play on is called you run full pelt at the man he then has two choices, pass or try and side step. Since I think Folau could probably side step any one who was dumb enough to try it they would probably go for that option and succeed, then move forward unhindered. If you continue to stand the mark you are restricting his ability to move forward as if he tried to he would be the one arriving to the engagement with more energy and thus be less manoeuvrable, probably leading to a holding the ball call. Therefore he will be restricted to exercising his backward pass option. There is only upside to giving him a little more time.

Also, the umps call "Move it on" sometimes before they call "Play On" to give the kicker some warning that they are pushing the clock. Even if you hear the umpire you might hear it wrong.

Also - 9/10 times there is a teammate of the kicker lurking or running past. Too easy to slip a handball over the top before being tackled...

The OP is showing symptoms of an armchair expert. If its that easy and it works, believe me the players would do it.

Most of the time the man on the mark will look at the ump to see if play on has been called 100% as to not give a 50, this gives the player with the ball time to play.

Light travels faster than sound.

Yeah but both are still phenomenally fast, it doesn't make 2-3 seconds difference.

I always think that a player like Garlett/Rioli/Banfield should have a role to stand just outside the area away from the player kicking, behind them. When play on is called, then Garlett/Rioli/Banfield sprint in from behind them. If the player doesn't make up his mind, he will be caught holding the ball.

Wouldn't want to do it too often because teams will wake up to it, and also have to be careful of being too close and giving away a 50. But could work every now and then and possibly turn a game if there is a goal from the turnover.
