Hoping you guys can help me with a training question.

I've got MM half in less than 4 weeks. I had a 12-14 week training program that has being going pretty well though I've had various niggles here and there, especially the last few weeks. I took most of last week off and only did one run before I was struck down by a cold on Friday. I then battled through and did a 10k run on Saturday but felt pretty average. That gave me 20k total for the week down from a 40-50k block of a month or so.

Since then I've had a chesty cough and the usual cold symptoms with some aches and chills but no temperature.

Anyway, I'm resting it out and hoping to be over the worst of it in the next day or so with a view to going for a light run on Thursday or Friday.

Assuming that all goes to plan, I'll be 3 weeks out from the race and I'm trying to work out how to approach that time.

My first priority is to get to the line as healthy as possible (both in terms of niggles and the cold), so I'd like to have at least 3 days off before race day. I'd also planned to start my taper 2 weeks out. At the same time, I'm mindful that I'm going into the race on the back of a month's worth of sub-par training.

So, if I feel good come the end of this week, what are your thoughts on:

1. Sticking to my 2 week taper vs 1 week (given the rest periods I've have in the lead up).

2. The type of runs I should try to get in pre-taper. I'm thinking quality over quantity - doing some interval or tempo runs to sharpen me up and not worrying too much about the longer runs.

Thanks a lot!

Not sure on best approach but what I will say is I'm sure you'll be fine. You've done stacks of work with some great runs in there.

I hardly did anything in the 3 weeks leaving up to Wonderland due to Achilles but was surprised how well I got through.

As for MM...... less than 4 weeks. I'm starting to get pretty nervous about this full.

Yeah like miner boy said you should be ok to go ahead with your original plan if youve got the training behind you already. Ive heard alot of people actually do really well when they've had a minor injury or illness that forced them take some time off.

ASICS Kayanos got two pairs of them (21s and 22s) love them and haven't had any injuries since i switched to them. One pair has done something like 1100km and are still in good condition (use the new ones for my running now though).

New shoe time again.

What are you Guys wearing at the minute?

My last two pairs have been Mizuno Waveriders but looking at the Adidas Supernova's.

Asics Gel Oberon 10, purchased in Perth a month or so ago. So good and comfortable this is the first pair I've worn since I've started running semi seriously that I haven't gone for a pair of inner soles.

For those who have run it before:

1. How long before the race do I need to get there (leaving clothes with family)?

2. Where's a good place for spectators to go for the half?

Thanks

Even though it's the half, I'd allow a good hour to make sure everything is done (loo break, warm up, getting into position which you should do at least 15 minutes prior). Having always done the full and never the half it's hard to say where the best spectator points are.

I know for the full I'm hoping to be there at least 75 minutes prior at bag drop. Gather the thoughts for 15 or so in the bowels of The G, then strip, hand bag in, head straight for the loos in the below ground level councorse in the Ponsford Stand before hopefully being near RLA with at least 35 minutes to go. Dynamic style warm up, a few run throughs and head to position with 15 minutes to go.

Thanks a lot mate.

I swear I get more nervous about just getting to the start line than the race itself!

Cheers PoopingHindi just been out for an easy 5km at Parkrun.

Now to enjoy a day in the city with the family (no doubt walking more miles than I want at the zoo :)) before a nice pasta at the Spaghetti Tree in the city tonight.

Best of luck to all the other runners.
