would you be accepting to him at the club?

he will be nominating for both drafts.

Hawks need some experience, and whilst he is renowned as being more of a leading forward, i have seen him play a more crumbing role.

whilst a lot of people laugh at him for doing stupid things (such as kicking the ball into moss this yr) im sure even at his age the hawks could quickly get that out of him.

Another positive, hes had very few soft tissue injuries.

Re: Russel Robertson

I'd have to say no to this. No need to put another player in our forward line. And besides, he is garbage.

Re: Russel Robertson

I dont think he would go too badly but he wouldn't be what the club needs right now I dont think..someone down back.

Re: Russel Robertson

At the start of the year, I would have said no chance.

However I am not against recruiting a senior player. Robbo is fully fit now, and didnt have a full pre-season, with one, he could be valuable.

If the draft isn't that deep, the maybe we should use the third round selection on a recycled player, Robbo could be in the frame.

Re: Russel Robertson

Hmm, I'm not sure we need forwards. We have heaps of forwards... unless you're thinking along the lines of having Roughy play CHB and Robbo play FF?

I dunno.

Re: Russel Robertson

Two things suprise me here.

First that it took this long for someone to start this thread and second the disappointment to see MM start it.

I'm sure RR is a very nice chap but he offers us nothing but a step back to the football model of Kevin Sheedy and as KS found out...that model is now BUSTED. A long way of saying NO Thank you.

Re: Russel Robertson

watch how robbo plays. usually im dead against recruiting players like him. but i think he could play in a pocket as a crumber. He was playing like that when Neitz was at the club.

and he would be another verestile option. Hes fit for hes age.

perhaps its only I who thinks this way though

Re: Russel Robertson

No thanks - lacks second efforts and defensive pressure :thumbsd:

Fair enough to say no to recruiting him but that last bit is just a shit comment that shows you have no clue about football.

Re: Russel Robertson

Definitely not for us. Under any circumstances. I do however want someone to recruit him so he can spend less time on his music.

Back in his prime comments like that would be invalid. However, welcome to 2009. As others have established earlier in this thread, he is a front runner who would provide nothing to the Hawthorn Football Club. Next.

I think your being very harsh.

Firstly Kevin Sheedy was a great coach, and although the game passed him by, he still had very good football knwoledge and 70% of things he did would still be successful today, he just lost the other 30% due to the 'changing game'

Secondly Russell Robertson had suffered a major injury during the 2008 season which hampered his ability to have a full pre-season (something everyone needs). He was given a two year conttract by Melbourne at the end of 2007, when the Western Bulldogs were willing to offer 3 and there 1st round selection which was No.5. However, he was very loyal to Melbourne, a trait our coaching staff love.

And Thirdly, we have recycled before when the draft pool was weak in 2007. In that draft it was understood only the first round you were able to choose a decent player, hence we drafted Rioli (1st Round) and then a bottom aged player (Whitecross) with our second round. Then we chose a bloke called Stuart Dew which payed off immensly last year.

Now, I don't know if Robbo is the answer to being our "mature aged" recruit, but I ceratinly think a mature player MUST be considered with a late selection this draft. We stocked u[p on youth to compensate for this last year and did very well in Savage and Shiels considering there picks, age, and scope for improvment.

Re: Russel Robertson

and he has kicked 40 goals a year whenever he plays a full season. I would normally be against this sort of player, but for some reason it interests me. I know we have heaps of forwards, but we have struggled at times to kick goals, even when we were getting it into 50. At full strength we dont need him, and hopefully by round 1 next year we might be at full strength, but injuries are gonna come.

I see Robbo playing a similar role to Willo. Here's a hypothetical. IF the powers that be decided to do something like trade willo and whatever to get the elusive KPD, would we then consider Robbo as a short term replacement?

Re: Russel Robertson

One reason it may make sense to look at Robertson, is if we traded a player like Williams. We have been sorely missing his input lately.
Otherwise I would say he's probably not the greatest fit for us.

Re: Russel Robertson

Geez this board changes its tone. One minute we are saying "Oh shit no, we can't pick up a 25 year old,cos apparently thats too old, we have to just keep topping up with 18 year old matchsticks, cos that seems to be the answer."

then,

we are suggesting this 28 plus year old with the heart of a pea, who does nothing but take specky's or at least try.

No way known...

Re: Russel Robertson

He'd be more than handy in a quality team.
We are quality team
That being said the answer is no

Breust anyone?

What interests me is that some people think a 30yo is the answer to our problems.

We already have at least one player starting his 2010 pre season. (A player you know quite well Bards).

Another player (Guerra) is going under the knife on Monday to ensure he is right for an October return to full training.

I expect the Hawks to go back to the 2008 pre season of absolutely gut busting runs, long hard sessions in the gym and follow up with light run up the 1000 steps at the Dandenongs with a full pack on their back.

As well it is a Kokoda year...except recent tragic events may sway that decision but in the end I expect they will go back. All new recruits over the last 2 years and those that haven't done Kokoda will go.

Do you honestly expect a guy who has just sort of recovered from a very serious achilles injury is going to make it through what will be the pre season from hell?

I'm all for giving over 18s a look including the gent from SA who just missed out this year and especially Cam Pederson from Box Hill, guys who can do the pre season. I'm not for players who want the 2009 type pre seaon option instead. (2009 pre season option was more players in the rehab group than in the actual training group)

Re: Russel Robertson

i think we could do with him, Dew was a good pick up and if we get another 2 years out of him and kick 30-40 goals, well worth it
