True guns can do lots of things. Lake can take marks and defend. Mayne can tackle and kick goals. True gun taggers like Ling and Rawlings could shut someone down and get the ball themselves.

Crowley is an elite tagger, but a very, very limited footballer.

The thing about him is early in his career he was quite a talented ball winner and user.

The fact that he's been able to have almost two separated "lives" as a footy player, and be good at both holds him very high in my book!

He is so good at his designated role he makes up for other deficiencies. The game has seen defenders like players like this.

He´s an important part of Lyon´s game plan. If he hadn´t stopped Johnson,
Freo might not have won that match. Stevie J is a game changer with zillion´s of X factor.
Crowley shut him down and they won. He´s a good weapon or weapon neutralizer to have.

I made the Crowley for AA thread a couple of months ago

Terrific at what he does. You want about 22 guys on your team who do this and you would spend 10 years winning every game.

Secondly, I dont undervalue the defensive aspects. Ive watched Brady Rawlings and Cameron Ling tag (fairly, mind you) whilst being able to resemble a footballer with the ball.

Crowley is an elite role player and has been for 2 years. Harvey has been a dynamic footballer for 15 years.

Don't compare their value.

I'm a bit confused as to why a lot of people are applauding Crowley and degrading Johnson. Yes, it seemed like Johnson was a poor loser. But Crowley was as much a poor winner. They were both shooting their mouth off - yet posters have decided Johnson was entirely in the wrong. Ok.

I think Crowley is underrated as a footballer, can get the ball in close when needed and is a relatively effective clearance player. Obviously an excellent tagger. Wouldn't call him a star though.

Their CURRENT value is what I am comparing so stop moving the goal posts.

And its of great credit to Crawley that he is so valuable to his team despite his obvious deficiencies.

Defence is as important a part of the game as offence is. Defenders make careers out of excelling at spoiling or negating while being average or even horrible at attacking or constructive play.
