Looking forward to the Toots Hibbert count. Nice to review the season prior to the new year.

We will also ramp back up when the season is underway in 2023. If any of you know any decent posters around the place who haven’t yet found their way to the Sweet FA, please shoot them a PM and encourage them to sign up.

To ShaunDuggan, if this is it for you at the Swamprats, we wish you every success in 2023 and beyond. We hope you find the spark you need and we thank you for what you brought to the club.

Good luck to all with a chance tonight.

Good evening everyone, and welcome to the Swamprats best & fairest count for season 34, where at the end of the night, the highest vote winner will receive the Toots Hibbert Medal. We enjoyed (endured?) a mixed season of good and bad - good that we returned to finals action after "winning" the S33 wooden spoon, but bad in that we didn't progress beyond the first week of the finals. We'll certainly be out to do everything we can to do better in season 35.

The count will be underway shortly. However along the way, we'll be presenting a number of other awards, as follows:

  • Groove Medal - presented to our highest goal kicker of the season (no prizes for guessing who it is).
  • Drazah Medal - presented to our best rookie of the season.
  • Captain's award - where I use my discretion to choose somebody, who I believe has been a particularly valuable member of the squad during the season.

Round 1 v Demons by jackster83

After a wooden spoon in season 33, the Swamprats faithful were eager to see an improved side on and off the field in season 34. A LG featuring the additions of okeydoke7 and Grav and ShaunDuggan gave the Rats a fresh and hungry look, however the excitement soon turned to anger as a team sheet violation and a squad listing violation (sorry Power Raid) saw the Rats dragged into the courthouse and hit with a points penalty.

It was a relief when the game finally got underway, which soon turned to celebration when season 34 rookie BloodySwan booted the Rats’ first goal of the season, two minutes in. The two sides traded goals (and behinds) for the remainder of the term, before okeydoke7 kicked truly to give the Rats a small 4.3 (26) to 3.4 (22) lead at quarter time.

The arm wrestle continued early in the second term, with a fantastic ShaunDuggan goal undone by an unforced error by jackster83. The Demons started to gain momentum, peppering the goals and opening up a 17 point lead. The Rats hit back via goals to veterans ant555 and sataris but this was quickly countered by three late goals to the Demons. The Rats trailed by 21 points at the main break, 7.6 (48) to 10.9 (69).

okeydoke7 lifted the Rats early in the third term with a quick goal, before the Demons regained ascendancy through cooney. BloodySwan again hit the scoreboard, though he could only convert one of his three shots, before GremioPower joined in. By now the margin was back to 10 points and another Demons goal was quickly countered by goals to RPCB and okeydoke7, to bring the within a straight kick. The Rats would eventually go in to three quarter time trailing 13.8 (86) to 13.15 (93).

A strong start to the Rats in the final term, saw ShaunDuggan bring the margin to one behind. By now the tension levels had risen, and both sides were missing shots at goal and making errors. The Demons landed a couple of blows courtesy of DemonJim and Tarkyn_24 before the skipper philreich replied with a major to reduce the margin back to single digits. Unfortunately that was as good as it got for the home side, with several late goals seeing the Demons getting up by 15 points, winning 18.18 (126) to 17.9 (111).

Round 2 v Dragons by jackster83

Desperate to respond after earning negative premiership points in round 1, the Rats travelled to the wonderland that is Dragon Island and @Ljp86’s Lair. Having lost their last five games to the Drags, there was understandably a bit of doom and gloom in the Rats’ camp. It was left to Firestarter to carry the load as far as pre-game hostilities go, at least until a trip to Dragon Island Subway boosted the Rats’ spirits.

Former Rat Hatchy1992 got the home side off to a flyer before a spectacular mark and long goal by philreich saw the Rats level it up. Hatchy1992 added another before star Rats rookie BloodySwan pegged one back. Both sides traded goals before KinderSmock booted a goal through the wrong goals, earning jeers from the home fans and Firestarter alike. Repeated turnovers by jackster83 saw the Dragons regain the lead and the Rats could not convert their chances. The Dragons held a small advantage at quarter time, leading 4.3 (25) to 3.5 (23).

The scoring dried up to start the second term, taking nearly nine minutes before Hatchy1992 kicked his third. After several attempts, okeydoke7 finally kicked one through the big sticks, reducing the margin to two points. Hatchy added his fourth before okeydoke7 again goaled to keep the Rats in touch. philreich unselfishly handing off a goal to ShaunDuggan saw the Rats take the lead before okey scored again to give the Rats an 11 point buffer at half time.

The Rats had the better of the contest early in the third term, with sataris and ant555 adding majors, and HirdsTheWord mopping up nicely in the back half. When sataris goaled again, the Rats were suddenly out to a 23 point lead, before okeydoke7 added two more to his tally. The Rats were looking ominous at the final break, leading 12.10 (82) to 8.9 (57).

Hatchy added to his collection to get scoring underway in the final term, before adding another, and then braedsman kicked truly to bring it back to a five point game. Three straight behinds to the Rats followed before GremioPower booted a goal and risked a Bigfooty ban by getting stuck into Chief. Goals to BloodySwan, GotTheGoodes and Power Raid saw the Rats get home by a reasonably comfortable margin in the end. Final scores were Sin City 16.15 (111) to 11.12 (78).

Round 3 v Roys by jackster83

Round 3 saw the Rats head to Renown Park to take on the reigning premiers. Both camps were in a chipper mood, with @philreich’s dad jokes making an appearance and tim tams being shared amongst both playing groups. Even Firestarter was buoyant following North Melbourne’s coaching announcement.

The veteran Power Raid got the Rats off to a fast start, before Zevon equalized things for the Roys. Premiership winning Rats GotTheGoodes and sataris added goals along with okeydoke7 while RU_ was keeping the Roys in touch at the other end. Some slack defending by the Rats saw tigs2010 level the scores just before quarter time. Both sides were on 4.1 (25) when the siren blew.

The Roys blew the Rats away early in the second term, piling on six consecutive goals before Kennedy Parker broke the drought for the visitors. okeydoke7 added another but the Rats went into the main break with some work to do, trailing 6.4 (40) to 10.7 (67).

The Roys again came out strong in the third quarter, scoring a quick goal courtesy of zackah. Unforced errors were hurting the Rats’ defence, with the Roys scoring in sometimes comical fashion. When TheDarkDwarf got poleaxed, leading to another Roys’ goal, the margin was out to nearly 10 goals. The Rats rallied late care of Power Raid and BloodySwan, but they were still a long way behind at the last break, trailing 9.4 (58) to 15.12 (102).

RU_ added to his tally to start the final term and dash any hopes the Swamprats might have had of a comeback. TheDarkDwarf and Ant Bear were fighting hard across half back and okeydoke7 and Kennedy Parker continued to score goals but there were too few winners for the Rats. Despite some consolation goals, the Roys won comfortably, 19.13 (127) to 15.5 (95).

Firestarter was crowned the winner of the Fatty Lumpkin medal.

Round 4 v Bombers by jackster83

Heading home after a disappointing loss to the Roys, the match thread against the Bombers got off to a bright start, with the OP featuring a qWordle puzzle (author’s note – I have never played or even know how to play Wordle). Ant Bear even briefly popped in, but left before he could be chased up about his outstanding bar tab. Firestarter and Bombers firebrand BLUEALLTHRU traded blows and dragged their team mates into various shitfights before Guerilla Radio calmed things between the two camps. Some <statement redacted> happenings led to rainy conditions at the Underground Stadium for the match.

The Bombers got off to the solid start courtesy of Bovo, before a long range goal to Grav saw the Rats level the scores. Kennedy Parker and okeydoke7 then each added goals to give the Rats a slight advantage. The Bombers had their chances but couldn’t convert. The Rats went into quarter time leading 3.0 (18) to 1.5 (11).

Rats season 34 rookie KinderSmock got the home fans up and about with a torpedo goal to start the second term. Crowd favourite darthmann then extended the lead before HirdsTheWord took a screamer to get the crowd really going. Both sides traded goals for the remainder of the quarter, with the Rats holding a 15 point lead at half time. 7.2 (44) to 4.5 (29).

The Bombers scored the first goal of the third term after a HirdsTheWord turnover. sataris added two goals in short time to see the Rats up by 17 points, before one of last season’s rookies in Ticky009 extended it further. At three quarter time, the Rats were up 10.7 (67) to 6.5 (41).

The siren had barely finished blowing to signal the start of the final term and okeydoke7 had already troubled the scorers (and picked a fight with BLUEALLTHRU). Power Raid and GremioPower then added to Baghdad’s pain, before okey added his fourth. When BloodySwan added another, it was party time at the Underground Stadium. The Rats ran out 15.12 (102) to 6.6 (42) winners.

Before we continue with the count, we need to hand out our first award of the night. okeydoke7 was the runaway winner with 50 goals - he booted 30 more than the runner up, sataris: which I guess highlights our problems in attack. We need to find another reliable goal kicker or two, because okey can't do it on his own!!!

But that's not tonight's problem - congratulations okeydoke7 on winning the Groove Medal for season 34, and we look forward to many more big hauls from you in the coming season.

Round 5 v Gumbies by jackster83

Back to back home games presented the chance for the Rats to record consecutive wins for the first time this season. The week got off to a rocky start with JoshWoodenSpoon doing a runner and failing to post the match thread. Coming up against Sweet FA moguls in beez and DenieD as well as former Rats full forward Catsnlakers, the Rats were led in the build up by Firestarter and ShaunDuggan.

The Gumbies started well, scoring in under two minutes. Power Raid hit back before Supercheapgiants added his second for the visitors. okeydoke7 responded with a major for the Rats before Barrybran added his first (of what would be a bag). The Gumbies then extended their lead, going into the break leading 4.4 (28) to 2.1 (13).

The Rats came out of the blocks strongly in the second term, piling on five consecutive goals, with Power Raid and okeydoke7 adding two each, before the 200 gamer miggs responded for the Gumbies. The Swamprats went into half time with a two goal buffer, leading 7.4 (46) to 5.4 (34).

The Gumbies kicked the first goal of the third term, with StFly getting in the grille of Ant Bear. This enraged the home fans, who demanded a response from their side. Respond is exactly what the Rats did, piling on four quick goals courtesy of Power Raid, okeydoke7 and crowd favourite ant555. With a healthy 31 point buffer, the Rats seemed to think the job was done, allowing the Gumbies to score three goals and reduce the deficit to 13 points at the final change.

The Gumbies booted the first major of the final term, before GremioPower missed a straight forward chance to extend the lead. A Supercheapgiants torpedo goal brought the Gumbies back to within less than a kick before a double strike by Barrybran gave the visitors the lead. When miggs kicked his 3rd, the game was done and dusted. The Gumbies ran out 21 point winners, scoring 15.10 (100) vs Swamprats 12.7 (79).

Round 6 v Royals by jackster83

After again failing to register two wins on the trot, the Swamprats headed east…west…f*ck it, I have NFI…to the Golden Throne to take on the Royals. A quiet match thread, even coming up against former dual premiership Rats star SarahSmiles saw pleasantries exchanged but not a lot of heat in the build-up. This was further dampened by the death of a RL royal. Only just before the first bounce did the tardy Rats’ LG acknowledge the 400 game milestone man ShaunDuggan.

Power Raid got the Rats off to a flyer, scoring within the first minute. Five minutes later he repeated the dose and when okeydoke7 and sataris chimed in, the margin was already 26 points, leaving the Royals looking shellshocked. jackster83, in his 150th game, decided to get in on the scoring action, but unfortunately he booted it through the wrong goals (no deliberate free was paid despite the protests of The Filth Wizard). darthmann added another (this one through the correct goals) and the Rats led at the first break 5.2 (32) to 1.3 (9).

okeydoke7 extended the lead with the first goal of the second term and when Ant Bear added a stunning running goal, the margin was just short of six goals. Rats rookie BloodySwan then kicked truly and when Power Raid added his third, alarm bells were ringing in the Royals camp. Half time saw the Rats leading 9.5 (59) to 2.3 (15).

The home side needed a lift in the third term, and they got it, first through grumbleguts and then The Filth Wizard. Camros2 was also providing a spark on the half forward line and the Royals continued to peg back the margin. When Filthy added another just before the three quarter time, the Royals were back in the game. The Rats had not scored at all that quarter and were just hanging on, leading 9.5 (59) to 8.7 (55).

The Rats scored the first goal of the final term, courtesy of Grav, before former Rats superstar full forward SarahSmiles replied and got in the grille of Firestarter. A controversial coaching move had seen RPCB moved to full forward but suddenly it started to pay off. He booted 2.1 in the last 15 minutes, and along with Kennedy Parker and Ant Bear, saw the Rats to a comfortable win. The final score was 15.11 (101) to 9.8 (62)

Round 7 v Furies by okeydoke7

This round saw us travel to @rfctigerarmy’s hippodrome, a unique venue against a unique set of posters - all thoroughly disappointing in their own ways.

Pleasantly, the Furies were an improvement on their Season 33 iteration, but it's a low base to come from.

On field, though, this was no disappointment. A tight affair all game, this round saw us survive a late scare to come out 4 point winners.

This was an even contribution across the board, with GotTheGoodes managing 21 touches and a goal and okeydoke7 kicking 5 goals straight in a rare display of accuracy. Shout out to BloodySwan for his statless game.

Looks as if GremioPower is in the box seat to win his first Toots - we'll see what the second half of the season brings.

It's now time to hand out our second award of the night. The Drazah Medal is handed out each season to our best rookie, and is named after the late brother of jackster83, who tragically died 5 years ago, but remains forever in our hearts.

This was an easy decision - BloodySwan has been an outstanding contributor in his debut season: so much so, that he's been added to our leadership group for season 35. Congratulations mate: you thoroughly deserve your Drazah Medal.

Round 8 v Bears by okeydoke7

With finals still not out of the question come round 8, us Swamprats entered Round 9 with optimism. The Bears had a tremendous recent record against the Rats coming into the match, but the Rats were confident of breaking the streak.

The confidence was misplaced.

The Bears took the points with a comfortable 35 point win.

The Bears led from the first score to the last despite the best efforts of Grav (24 touches and 2 goals) and GremioPower, who won the ruck contest and had 24 possessions.

BloodySwan was incredibly statless for a 2nd week running.

It was back to the drawing board for the Rats, who only managed 9 goals for the game.

Round 9 v Old Boys by okeydoke7

The up and down nature of the season continued, though with more down than up! The Old Boys came out 25 point winners despite having 5 less scoring shots for the game.

GotTheGoodes was huge with 26 possessions and a goal, closely matched by GremioPower and Grav with 24 and 25 touches respectively. GremioPower held the opposition ruck to 2 tapouts, forcing a ruck change. He conceded only 4 tapouts to his 16 in total and also scored 2 goals in as dominant a ruck display as you could ask for.

But it wasn’t enough as the wayward Swamprats sprayed their way to 11 goals 15. @okeydoke7’s 4 goals could’ve proved helpful but it was a missed opportunity with a disappointing 4.5.

Dominic03 joined the fun with a solid 18 possessions in the disappointing loss.
