Why do ppl always say the players will leave with the coach, do you really think they have a stronger relationship with a 50 year old boss/teacher than they do with the other players
Surely Ken is closer to 70 than 50.

The only, and I mean ONLY, silver lining about Hinkley potentially coaching on next year is to watch him sweat in the final year of a contract for the first time. His artificially sweetened heart wouldn’t be able to cope and he would pull up stumps before bye round would be my guess.

Ken sweating?

At what point for the sake of stability do you think the club is going to pull the trigger on a extension?

We scrape into the finals the club could add an extra 2 years on his contract. I’m actually almost certain Ken is gone at the end of the year or has an couple of years added to keep those big Victorian clubs at bay.

Ken doesn’t sweat.

The same game that Patrick Cripps missed? The one that Carlton just came out and won rather than whingeing and making excuses? Like how they beat Freo on the weekend without Cerra, Weitering, Williams, McGovern, Martin and Pittonet.
You can't win a flag without overcoming adversity.

This is what he should have said last time he was asked. 'Ken is contracted to 2023' and 'Ken will be coaching us in 2023' sound similar but are in fact entirely different statements.
They know that the headline now will be Richardson refuses to lock in Hinkley for 2023.

That's why they say it thr way that they do.

100% OK with that though.

If you can't handle the heat, get out of the kitchen. This is Port Adelaide.

If we scrape into 8th, lose the first final and keep Ken I'll vomit.
If we scrape in I’m resigned to him staying.

If we don’t and he stays I’ll be throwing one hell of a tantrum!

but coming 8th and going out first week is just not good enough. It is not like he has a scrubber list. You shouldn't have to resign yourself to anything.

He has squandered his opportunities and really it is the fault of the board not to have called him on it sooner and the extension was sheer madness.

Why are you writing like there's a choice for me?

I'd sack him 6 years ago!

But also know the board won't if he makes finals.

I’ve encountered this theme a lot while engaging with Hinkleyphiles, seeking to understand why they’re so enamoured with his ongoing tenure.

This, just recently:

“We’ve kept everyone we want to keep and if he leaves there’ll be an exodus [doubtful, but ok].”

— “So we’re held to ransom by a mediocre coach in perpetuity?”

“It is what it is.”

Cool.

No I agree the club is to blame and being a supporter is either developing some sort of Stockholme Syndrome, or a damned if i do and damned if i don't scenario. We can't win (not just on the field) with him there.

edit: sorry I am not making much sense. I am saying Port people shouldn't have to make heartbreaking choices about their club (but we are) if we get back to the expected perform or you are out which was always brilliantly done at Port Adelaide in the past. No one person was ever bigger than the needs of the club.

Yup, and everyone has their breaking point.

Mine will be 'No Finals, yet he stays'.

I'll save myself the annoyance next year if that happens.

I'd prefer him gone regardless, but I am not ready to 'walk away' for that.

Not really unequivocal

What's not a hypothetical is that a coach can keep his job for 10 years without winning anything only if there is an environment of low expectations.

If you want to walk the Chasing Greatness™ walk Richo, you need to change this and put some heat on him.

If you're doing this internally, it's not working and you need to feed a few well chosen lines to the media to light a fire under him.

What's the worst that could happen? The team caves under pressure and fails to make finals which we're not going to make anyway and Hinkley threatens to walk à la 2017?

What's the downside?

Richo, here's some lines to get you started:

"Port Adelaide exists to win premierships. Two years ago we set ourselves the goal of winning 3 flags in 5 years. As a club we are far from achieving this and we expect our supporters to hold us accountable. Ken, as our senior coach, knows he needs to deliver this year and if he does that 2023 will look after itself."

Yeah I'd 100% take a year off.

Just on this. There's an option to put your membership on hold for a year or two, or at least there was that option a few years back. Just say you're moving OS or whatever for a year.

I would be honest. Hinkley is still there so I'm gone.

I nagged the poor woman who rang me to query my cancellation, ruthlessly. I wasn't rude. I was very calm and as I kept telling her that I know this wasn't her fault but the club needed to know. Sadly she probably didn't bother . I was probably recorded as becoming a Scientologist or Vegan.
