I am thrilled with the performance of the Saints at the moment.
They were unlucky to have lost to a very in-form Melbourne outfit last week, and despite being down and almost out, they turned it around in the third quarter and almost won the match. (Melbourne had to create AFL history with the most goals scored ever from outside 50 to beat us).
Then the absolute gutsy effort across the whole team in a wet Sydney to get up (despite some dubious umpiring feulling a Sydney revival in the last quarter).
I just caught some footage of Grant Thomas after the Sydney match on "On the Couch". It was inspiring stuff.
Thomas enters the players' race heading towards the dressing rooms.
The camera catches him signalling to someone further down the race, you can see the pride written all over his face. He taps his heart region twice. Whoever he is signalling to - he was indicating that the Saints won because they had the heart to do so. The camera follows as he progresses towards the rooms. Luke Ball is outside, his face bruised and bloodied. Thomas approaches and they hug with true enthusiasm, this is a genuine moment - spontaneous celebration and a shared congratulations. This game was important to them. Thomas then proceeds to the rooms to see the rest of the team.
I felt like a voyer in a way. We, Joe Public, rarely get to see these sort of exchanges take place. Thomas rarely shows his emotion in public. But it touched me. The players love him and he loves them like they were his own children.
I have to say that I have stepped up my expectations of how the Saints will go this season.
Did you see the boys when the siren went off?
Did you see the players participate in the song?
Did you see the footage I just mentioned?
There is some real emotion there. Not just the emotion of another win.
This was an enormous win for the Saints.
Despite their injury woes they took out Sydney (The reigning premiers) on their own turf in conditions that would have favoured the home team.
They did this without Lenny, without Kosi, without Hammer, without Xavier or Raph.
Did you see Goddard singing the song - this was a special win and he showed it in his every action.
Everyone performed. The coaching was excellent. The gameplan was without a doubt superior. The commitment of the players was borderline pathologically obsessed. The skills displayed were superior. Everyone put in.
I now rate us a serious chance of upsetting Adelaide at the Dome on Friday night.
