I know the AFL isnt keen on the Mid season draft coming back.
But it would be interesting if say the bottom 4 or 5 clubs at the half way mark of the season were able to pick up players. Either from the VFL, WAFL and such.
So its not really a proper mid season draft but a little help just for the bottom teams to try and fill a deficiancy in there list . No need to include the top clubs, use it just to help the bottom teams be more competitive for the rest of the yr and maybe get the first crack at some unearthed gems .
For example if a decent sized backman was having a standout season at the lower levels it would be helpfull for the Saints to have the chance to pick him up mid season. Theres the Rookie listed players as a back up for injury of course. But if theres a overlooked player running around in the SAFL having a blinder it seems stupid that a struggling AFL club couldnt pick him up.
Just a thought.

Gary Ablett thanks

Yes I realise he is an unknown running around in Queensland, but it could be good to get another mid, with some potential

Could only happen if clubs in question had an unfilled spot on their roster or rules regarding contracted players allowed it.

A player could be delisted as long as hes paid out of course ( Hello Matty Capuano)
The salary cap thing would have to be allowed by the AFL. There would be a bit of tinkering to do but if it helps struggling clubs be more competitive its good for the AFLs image. And would give Eddie McGuire something to winge about :)

I'm thinking more along the lines of the AFLPA getting involved if a contract for 1 season is dropped halfway through.

They got up in arms about us dropping Winmar when we did.

The AFL might suggest clubs are allowed 44 players on a list, and only need 25 for a squad i.e. WTF are you guys doing with your list?

Another issue is what you're doing to the teams where the (gun) player is being taken from.

The Saints cocked up with TDL and not addressing the rookie list (to ensure that any remaining list issues had some genuine backup).

I'd say the main use, would be injuries to key players.
For example Both McEvoy and Hickey get injured, we have Jason Blake as main ruck, so you grab Joel Tippet. But then it makes it harder for guys like Tippet to get drafted.
Would the likes of Currie be on AFL lists if they had a mid season draft?
