Saints to push Dogs for Cordy

Emma Quayle, Canberra | October 2, 2008

AT LEAST two clubs are prepared to bid a first-round draft pick on young ruck prospect Ayce Cordy, meaning the Western Bulldogs will have to part with their first choice, No. 14, to secure the teenager as a father-son selection.
St Kilda — which holds pick 13 in the national draft — is definitely willing to part with that choice under the bidding system introduced last year, and will bid for Cordy, while a couple of other clubs including Adelaide are also considering it.
Under the new system, if a rival club puts its hand up for a father-son prospect, the nominating club must use its next choice in the draft, regardless of rounds, to choose him. If the club decides to pass on a player, the club that made the bid is bound to follow through with it. The Bulldogs' rivals are not going to let the club get away with using their second-round pick for the highly rated Cordy.
Last year, Essendon was forced to use a third-round choice on Darcy Daniher after North Melbourne bid for him for an earlier pick, while Adam Donohue and Jaxson Barham were able to be chosen with Geelong and Collingwood's final choices, after no rival club made offers.
While the first round of the draft is considered very strong, and Cordy has not played since May after undergoing a shoulder reconstruction, Matthew Drain would have a strong understanding of his talents, having been the Bulldogs' football manager until this season.
The 202-centimetre Cordy, whose father Brian played 124 games for the Bulldogs during the 1980s, played some games for the Geelong Falcons last year as a 16-year-old and toured South Africa earlier this year with the AIS-AFL Academy.
Father-son nominations are due to be lodged with the AFL tomorrow, with the bidding on Monday morning, before trade week begins.

That was unexpected.
Was hoping we'd go for a mid first up. Highly doubt that the Dogs would let him slip. Certainties to use their 1st pick.

Gotta love some of these names, Steele & Ayce. :thumbsu:

For those that are interested:
Ayce Cordy - (R) 6 August 1990, 202cm 77kg. Geelong/Geelong College/Ocean Grove (Western Bulldogs F&S)

"Nicko4: Cordy is eligible to be taken by the Western Bulldogs under the father son rule in 2008 after his father, Brian, played 124 games for the club from 1981-88. He spent most of 2007 playing school football, but appeared 3 times for Geelong in the TAC Cup where he showed his mobility by averaging 14 disposals per game. He was strong in the air with an average of two contested marks in those games and despite standing over 200cm he was also good at ground level where he averaged 5 hard ball gets."

"foj1:: 10. Ayce Cordy 202cm 77kg Vic Country
Ayce is a very exciting athlete who is built like a lollypop. Another lightweight tall who has an outstanding vertical leap and good set of hands. Will need several AFL preseasons but looms as a definite F/S selection for the Bulldogs who will lick their lips at gaining this young bloke on their list."

Hasn't played much this season, had a shoulder reco a couple of months back.

Either way, it's a positive. Either we get another ruckman, leading us to the McEvoy/Cordy tag team for the next decade, or the Doggies are locked into a first round pick for him and we take someone else.

Would be handy if the dogs had a pick before us, but because they got a pick after us it doesn't really matter...

Cordy and McEvoy. Doesn't sound much like a premiership rucking duo. :p

We can hope.

Surely you can not be serious!!! *I am serious, and stop calling me Shirley*

That's the father-son system - otherwise they can use their last draft pick.

Why would the Saints bother bidding for him? There is no chance the Dogs would let him slip, and the club has already been helping him out.
It's obvious isn't it?
To get you to use your 1st round pick.

It worked.
Dogs have confirmed that they will use their 1st round pick on him.
Just quietly, thank god. He will be good but we need to take a mid with the 1st. :thumbsu:

They dont have too though he can still be taken at there second pick and we cant touch him!
I have seen him play and he was being double teamed at full forward and taking good contested marks and kicking 3-4 goals a game.
If a mobile tall man isnt what you want you have a problem! He will be a very good player possibly a cox type!:thumbsu:

I'm pretty happy about this. The kid is way too thin and I reckon we could pick up someone better at pick 13.

We could do with a line breaking speedster that can win his own ball.
Imo, Trengove would be better option for us over Cordy anyway. CHB/CHF/Ruck, Gigantic Leap.
Good system this is though. Much better than the previous one. :thumbsu:

So we don't get him, oh well. I think we knew the Dogs were always gonna take him no matter where.

Trengrove, McKernan or Roughead wouldn't be bad, wouldn't be dissappointed with Blease either. :D
