Saints trade without coach

ST KILDA may not have a coach during the critical October trade period, with the club determined to find the right candidate rather than rush its decision.

The Saints have decided to delay interviews for a new coach for at least another week so they can cast the net as wide as possible.

St Kilda had scheduled to begin discussions tomorrow, but has changed dates after the first meeting of the coaching sub-committee on Thursday.

"We're not interviewing Monday. We've still got a bit of work to do before we start the interviews," Saints chief executive Archie Fraser said.

"We've still got a bit of organising to do. Next week is obviously a big week with all the (Grand Final) activities. The week after the Grand Final would probably be the earliest we would do anything."

Sydney assistant John Longmire is one of the leading candidates to replace Grant Thomas and he would not have been able to meet with the sub-committee until after the Grand Final.

Assistant coaches, including Collingwood's Guy McKenna, St Kilda's Matt Rendell, Brisbane Lions' John Blakey and the Bulldogs' Chris Bond, are expected to be in the first batch of interviews.

The club is keen to secure a new ruckman, with Peter Everitt one of several players in the picture.

The list management committee believes it has the personnel to make the right decisions about the list.

That group will include the four assistant coaches already in place, along with recruiting manager John Beveridge, board member Mark Kellett and Fraser.

St Kilda president Rod Butterss said the club was determined not to rush what shapes as a massive decision after Thomas's sacking.

"The one thing I do know is that this is the highest priority the club has at the minute and we are not going to be short-circuiting the processes to hit a specific date," he said.

"It is much more important that we do it properly, we do it well and we do it thoroughly. We have got a series of steps we have to get through and we will take as long as it takes to get through those steps."

Butterss said newly appointed consultant Ken Sheldon had a wealth of experience to pass on about trading and drafting.

"He has got an incredible awareness and knowledge of all that," he said. "It is one change, really. Thommo out, 'Bomber' (Sheldon) in. And we are very confident we have got the processes, the strategies and the resources in place."

While St Kilda has no coach it is far from rudderless, with assistants Rendell, Jason Cripps, Jason Mifsud and Mick McGuane at the helm.

Despite facing uncertain futures at the club they are making decisions on retirements, delisting players, post-season reviews and the impending pre-season.

...When i read this this morning...it made me think that Brooks may have a chance....Bevo has stated his high hopes for Brooks.

...Hopefully it turns out well.

I hope so too. I have been waiting for so long for Brooks to get another go - on his own terms i.e. in the forwards with runs in the ruck.

That Rd 22 match may have saved his career, but the club haven't been making too many good decisions lately so his career could still be in jeopardy.

...yeh, worst senario is that we delist him...another club picks him up on bare minimum for a year and he becomes a superstar of the competition.

Not one i would like to see.

I've read on Saintsational a number of posters who wish to address our need for a new ruckman by recruiting someone who has been "in the system" for a number of years. It surprises me that they don't recognise that is exactly what Brooks is !

Recruiting Everitt for example would be a waste of Thomas's 5 and a half years at the helm...

...One of the best things he did was in fact change the culture of Stkilda...theres no doubt about that.

Recruiting Everitt or Gardiner...."two already in the system" would be a discredit to what we have worked so hard to achieve.

Having watched Brooks for all of last season I'm not convinced that he has what it takes to perform at senior level. I saw him kick 40 goals but he struggled when given a run in the ruck.

People have said that he was simply lacking confidence after coming back from a knee reconstruction and that he performed better this season so if the powers that be decide that he's worth another go I'm happy to support them.

I don't want Everitt or Gardiner at the club. That's non-negotiable.

Sainter, how much time did Brooks play in the ruck as opposed to the forwards? and did he play anywhere else?

I didn't see him play much this year. Cranbourne is a long way from my side of town. :o

Last year he played as a full forward for almost the entire season. At the time Ashley Eames was dominant in the ruck and the Scorpions seemed to lose momentum went Brooks went into the middle. That's one of the drawbacks of the AFL/VFL partnerships. If we had our own reserves team we would play Brooks in the ruck and give him experience but you can't blame Peter Banfield and his assistants for making the decisions that best benefit their own team. Perhaps he needed the full season to get some confidence after the knee injury.

I might sound a bit negative but I'd be very happy to be proven wrong. I suppose I wouldn't be disappointed if he was given one more season but it would have to be his last chance. The new coach might be exactly what he needs.
