Autopsy Saints v Dees

Anyway, I was as the game and have watched the replay (amazing what different experiences they can be sometimes) and we did a lot wrong. But we also did a lot right.
There's a change in intent tactically so I'm going to give it time. We have a fish with a good history of embedding a style of play, which I think can only really happen in actual games.
I noticed that, too. Probably at least 4 or 5 'two goal swings' where we were primed for a forward entry, couldn't find a target and got beaten on transition back the other way where they found a score.

It's round 1. The actions about whether or not the mantra will be fulfilled come over the next few months to see if our issues can be improved. You don't abandon the long term plan or aspirations just because you encounter some road bumps early on.

I wouldnt have thought two close losses and rd1 was enough f*ck ups to abandon all future aspirations and render all ambition pointless. But maybe your dream journal has a different goal setting instructions then mine.

And yes, history says we will probably fail. We usually always do. But is that a reason to never try? Or to stop trying the minute things don't go as we had hoped? If we stop trying because history says we will fail, we might as well shut down the club now because there is no point existing.
I think we just have totally different philosophies on how to achieve the success. I personally think criticism of stuff that isnt working and honesty about why is a much better approach than just going "nah were good, were 0-2 but dont change anything".

I get you that its early but 0-2 from two winnable games with our draw only getting touger is a rough start, we clearly need to tweak something here cause if were 0-4 or even 0-6 after the Adelaide fortnight were in all sorts of strife.
I actually think the media will forget about it soon enough, another week or two and someone else will be under the pump, maybe Voss. they have a limited attention span at the best of times.
Maybe if we win a few, if were 0-4 its not gonna magically drop off the pressure radar

it's the balance of going in for the footy in packs, and someone staying back. the way good teams do it is having 1-2 at contest and the rest positioned to help. last week way too many were crashing contests; this week we clearly tried to fix that but we still didn't get the balance right. I have no doubt Wilkie was trying to do the right thing but the Saints player in the contest didn't hold up his end of the bargain.
they always seemed to have a player front and center-like having a player on the goaline we have lost that ability

Bringing in Mihocek looks like an excellent move for the Dees, he himself doesn't need to score tons of goals if JVR can keep doing what he did yesterday and take the second best defender to task.

RoMa in next week and I hope we bring in Howard, sent Hammer forward and drop Keeler. I wouldn't expect Hammer to be our saviour but at least it gives Coops the third defender which he could feast on (provided he remembers how to actually pouch marks).

If you were paying attention, you would see I have criticised plenty today and mentioned multiple things I would change for next week.

But I always love the rhetoric that someone must think everything is okay and isnt criticising things just because they disagree comments being taken out of context or a specific criticism being said about an individual.

And i always appreciate than anyone criticising us for being shit is pissing their sheets.

Reductive as always i see.

I get it. But it's still his opponent flying at the ball and taking the mark.
He's the captain, organise it so that he's spoiling. It happened multiple times.
And moaning at teammates isn't leadership. Decision making and teaching are.
Get your own job done first and foremost.
Wilkie has had a payrise and been made captain. There's two ends to that bargain.

haha yeah easy to say, not so easy to do in the heat of battle!

Hopefully they'll implement breaks in play one day to assist.
If staying down while your opponent flies and marks happens multiple times, I reckon the solution isn't that hard to work out.
Option one is watch him mark it over and over. The second option is to start trying to effect a spoil.

This is true.
I just don’t thinking quoting what happened in 1996! Is at all relevant.

Slightly sarky post on here somewhere saying no Byrnes no Saints ( cbb finding it)….
In all seriousness, not a star - but he gives 100% and you know what you get from him. We could do a lot worse than having him in the team right now.
Ronnie has been a big loss. He's actually composed and knows where to be. A bit of a leader too. So frustrating.

Apparently that was the first time JVR didn't take a ruck contest.

Tom Morris made a passing comment on Fireball this morning about Phillipou not winning over his teammates. Reckon it's at least the second time I've heard him say something similar.

Makes me wonder who his sources are.

Phillipou does seem like a slightly odd cat, but footy clubs take all sorts to function and move forward.

He would want to get on his bike and start producing again. Outside of a 6-7 game purple patch there hasn't been that much to see with him so far.

Explains why he ran out of gas

St Kilda star Tom De Koning was put through a last-minute fitness test before the loss to Melbourne on Sunday after battling a virus late last week.
The Herald Sun can reveal the Saints were unsure he was going to play until about one hour before the game started after battling flu-like symptoms on Friday and Saturday.
The Saints’ ruckman failed to complete training on Friday and was sent home from Moorabbin in a bid to recover in time for the clash against Melbourne at the MCG.

I don’t know anything about it but from what I’ve seen, he may have that same trait that Goddard had, where if you weren’t there to get better, you’re in the way. He’s not there to make friends, he’s there to be as good at footy as possible.

Can see how that could rub others the wrong way

There’s teams out there that have been belted by 50+ points and their fans are less concerned than ours
Perhaps something to do with the fact that we were led to believe that we'll be challenging the best sides this year, just lost to a team predicted to be bottom 4, we currently look and perform no better than sides under Ratten & Richo after completely overhauling all aspects of the foorball dept and going on a massive recruiting drive.
