To put my disappointment in context I was on the Docherty bandwagon before the draft, hoping we would take him at 12. So when we did I was particularly excited, and right now I am feeling particularly betrayed. We fought so hard to get pick 12 for Clark, and now Docherty has just shat all over the club. What a bastard!

We've sponsored Docherty for the last 2 years - anyone know the best way to remove a texta signature from a footy jumper?

if I can't get rid of the signatures they'll be going pretty cheap if anyone's interested! :)

Well, I feel particularly shitty about the outcome of the Docherty piss off.

It was pretty much accepted that Karnezis and Polec were pining for the fjords but the Doc "I want out to join the Blues" defection really blind-side me.

Can't help thinking that Docherty must have played his cards really lose to his chest during Season 2013. How else does Doc get 13 games and Karnezis get treated like the town lepper?

The conventional thinking was that Karnezis (and probably Polec) were on the way out. Fair enough. We were kinda gearing up for those losses.

I am more pissed with the likes of Docherty, Longer and Yeo than Polec and Karny.

BOOOOO!!!

What a gimp. Not one mention of Brisbane as thanks for drafting him, or thanks for developing him, or giving him an opportunity to play senior AFL footy, or the opportunity to play alongside/learn from greats such as JB, Simon Black, Voss etc. Not even a token, half-arsed attempt at thanks/goodwill to Brisbane. God you'd think he was only just drafted today, as it sounds like a draft day acceptance speech, hardly a traded to a new club speech! Prancing around holding up his new jersey etc.

And yeah, he sounds ridiculously soft. "Brisbane life wasn't for me..even just the one month I've been back in Melbourne has been unreal...". And to reflect on his time in Brisbane - not a single comment about how he could have improved his game, or things he learnt, etc etc. No, it was a veiled dig at the coaching staff for him not having a run of games ("no continuity" in his senior side appearances as he put it) and saying that he definitely "didn't get the chance to play his best footy" this past season.

That's right Sam. The coaches were all holding you back from superstardom. Any rookie player should be gifted a spot straight into the best 22. Get your hand off it. With an attitude like that, Malthouse will smash you into dust. Good riddance.

He just needs to have one good look at Veszpremi's article from few weeks back.

Veszpremi -
drafted to sydney
traded to doggies
"sydney life was not for me, was too home sick, lacking opportunities. I'm looking forward to playing my best footy etc etc"

delisted by doggies -
"I was very home sick then so had to move from sydney back then. No doubt about that. But but but (a big BUTT), NOW I am very matured and I can go anywhere to play league footy and to get an opportunity"

I don't see much difference to Doc's attitude here. Let's see if he sinks or swims. Good riddance either way.

Ditto. My first serious pre-draft favourite that we actually drafted.

My mind goes back to Voss' comments about some players have to wait their turn in reference to Doc. Perhaps in his first year Voss really meant this arrogant little shit can wait his bloody turn and start respecting the work others are doing.

I think he displayed an attitude that I feel is growing more common among high draft picks these days. They've been fawned over their whole junior careers and develop a strong sense of entitlement; they're amazing and deserve to play for the club they grew up supporting, anything short of that is a let down.

There were no comments about being thankful to his old club for the opportunity to play league footy because he wasn't in need of one. His making it onto a list was a formality, it was just a question of where. And when there are less gifted players being drafted to his club of choice while he has to move interstate, that's not fair. He should be in their place, and they should be the ones moving away from home for their opportunity. It doesn't seem like he was ever interested in truly having a crack at making it with Brisbane, he was planning his exit from day one. (It may be that none of that is true, but that's the impression I got from it all).

I rather resent that the club facilitated his way to his childhood club while knowingly getting a raw deal. Get him to the right state, sure, but to the exact club of his choice for a bad deal? Ugh. I would've sooner had us get nothing and seen him try his luck in the PSD. I don't know what position Carlton have but he would've had fair odds of ending up elsewhere I'd reckon.

But then again, I might just be am overly vindictive.

2013 Review - by Bengwatkins

So here we are. Post a troublesome trade period and another year of building. Sam was the result of us losing Mitch Clark to Melbourne for pick 12, and the heir apparent to Drummond, the super boot we all loved. 2012 was sadly a write off for Sam, with injury preventing him from showing his goods on the big stage. 2013 was billed as his year to show both the Lions and the AFL why he was a first round pick.

Sams chance to run out in the Lions colours didn't take too long, with Round 4s match against North Melbourne seeing his name called out. It was an encouraging, leaving many faithful supporters keen for him to add consecutive games and confidence. Despite the match ending in a blowout loss, "The Doc" collected 20 disposals in his position at half back flank. Despite this, his other stats were less significant, with only 2 marks and 1 tackle, along with a single free for against his name at the end of the day.

Despite his initial debut, the following game saw Sam relegating to the dreaded Green Vest. After watching the majority of the game on the pine, he eventually came on and collected 5 disposals, 1 mark and 2 tackles in what was a comfortable win over the Demons. This usually common practice of being a sub lead to Sam also being dropped for the following 3 rounds, before returning against his future club Carlton in round 9.

Not including the round 11 bye, Doc played the next five games. These included the losses against Carlton, Collingwood and Fremantle, the fanatic come from behind win against Geelong, and the encouraging loss to Hawthorn. He again played the Sub role in the Collingwood, Fremantle and Hawthorn matches, limiting his game time. During these games he averaged 11.2 Disposals, 1.6 tackles and 2.2 marks. On the surface, they look like low numbers for a rebounding defender, especially with the heavy losses, mostly due to him being subbed at half or three quarter time in 3 out of 5 matches.

After sitting out rounds 15 and 16, Sam returned for all but one of the remaining games for the season. As Lions fan had become used to seeing, Doc played the role in the Round 20 loss to Richmond. He was also not selected for the final rounds narrow loss to Geelong. Will a good stretch of 6 games, with significantly more game time, his stats showed some improvement. His disposals improved to an average of 15.5, along with 2.3 tackles and 3.6 marks. He also kicked his single career goal during the defeat of St Kilda in round 19.

His total games for the season ended at 13 after the round 22 win over the revenge Bulldogs. Despite being sub several times and being in his second year of AFL, he showed glimpses of why he was one of the highest rated teenagers prior to the 2011 draft. His average disposals for the season was 13.4, with 3 marks and 1.9 tackles per game. He also showed his preference for kicking, with 7.4 averaged, compared to 6 handballs.

His best game for the season came against GWS, which the team comfortably accounted for, with a 123-63 routing. Against the least experienced side in the league, Doc was able to slice through midfield of the Giants, collecting a career high 27 touches. This included 15 kicks, 5 marks and 2 tackles. And 81.5% efficiency showed his pinpoint accuracy when he was on, as well as 4 rebounds, second only to Jed Adcock for the game. Many fans began to get excited by what could very well be a player of a calibre we needed in the back line to push towards finals.

Unfortunately this excitement quickly vanished on October 1st. After already being told by several other players of their intentions to return home, Sam informed the club of his request to return home to Melbourne. Despite a positive meeting with the clubs new coach, his decision was made. He met with several clubs, including Carlton, Essendon, the Bulldogs and North Melbourne. Most of the interest came from Dochertys club he grew up supporting, Carlton.

Trade week dragged out for the now extended duration, with the club juggling 5 different trade requests in an attempt to get an adequate return. In the end, despite extensive bargaining, leading to the trade being completed at the closing of the second last trade day. Sam was traded to Carlton for pick 33 at the time of the trade. In the end the clubs hands were tied, with Sam specifically requesting the Blues be his place of origin, and the club not willing to trade anything higher than a second rounder.

This sadly ended Sam Dochertys brief, and delayed, career at the Brisbane Lions. With the off field support for new and young players under review, and the likes of Hanley, Harwood and Golby to fill the void, one can only hope we don't see the exodus of this like again. Losing a player of Dochertys quality for the return we received will hurt the club, as it has been pointed out by media and other supporters repeatedly. Despite this, one can't help but wonder if this move was an inevitable occurrence.
