This Draper thing gets overlooked in the Merrett talk but it has been plain to me all year Essendon wanted to FA Draper this year for a first rounder.

1. He is an OK player but his ceiling is well known and they had Bryan coming through
2. They could have made a final, compelling irrefusable offer to him early in the year and didn't
3. They floated a rough quantum of their best offer which coincidentally would equate to a 1st round pick under FA compo
4. They did nothing to improve on it when others came

Plain as day, their list management intention was to let him walk out the door for a pick.

I mean based on the reporting it seems very likely they are. Probably more. Essendon reportedly come up to 5 years and were at 800k a year. You’d imagine we would have had the lowest offer on the table given we actually get something if he leaves.

So he is UFA because he isnt in the top 5 (top 12%) paid players at Essendon, and to be Band 1 you effectively need to be top 5% in the competition.

So Brisbane are going to double or triple the salary of a guy who barely plays 5 games in a row before serious injury?
