I wouldn't write him off yet.
Think if he was given a crack on the wing or HFF he would fit in well
I'd be fine for a Mayes for sgray this week

Probably too late to bring him in this year IMO. I'm hoping he's still on the list next year though and he gets a crack, we've put a lot more gametime into a lot less talented footballers than Mayes over the years.

Scott Harding.

Cameron Cloke probably wasn't pointless, but did nothing.
So much for the NFL career.

Mayes is the only player who moved clubs last off-season to not play a game in 2019.

I'd be really dissapointed if we delist Mayes. He has been really consistent in the SANFL and could find his place if there is a coaching change.
Mayes will get the Trengove/Toumpas useless 2nd year.

I think I he has something to offer too but I can't see us getting it out of him with this regime.

Maybe I should post this in the unpopular opinion thread, but I think Sam Mayes is an important cog if we are to push deep into October this year.

Sam can play forward, outside mid and defence. He can play each of these positions to an above average level.

When the season restarts, we will be playing games every week, no byes. There‘s 16 rounds to go, we need to win another 10 games and there is no time to be mucking around with structure. Sam could play for an injured Ebert, Motlop, Gray up forward, an injured Amon or Duursma in the midfield or for an injured Burton, Hartlett or Bonner down back.

I can’t quite remember why he dropped below Sutcliffe last year, but he is a better player than Cam-maybe he got injured at the wrong time. Every time I saw him play for the Magpies, he was in the best half a dozen players.

I‘m not saying he‘s first 22- but in a season where players will be pushed hard, he looms as a perfect and flexible squad player.

I actually agree BTW. He's a good all rounder. This season will be quite like one day cricket v 20/20 or even test matches. A good one dayer isn't nessesarily good at all forms. Think Simon O'Donnell.

I just don't see the appeal. Was good in a pre-season SANFL game last year and had 1 or 2 decent games in the back end of the year when pushed up the ground, but did nothing of note for all the other games.

Williams, Farrell and Cox should be getting games ahead of him up forward, Watts, Joel Garner and Lienert would be ahead of him down back. Only chance he has is if our wingers all go down.

Potential tight turnarounds between games means we need players like Sam on our list who can step in and be serviceable. Squads with a more even spread of talent can go deep this year.

Agree. As a general list management rule we've probably hung on to the likes of McKenzie, Mayes, Lienert, Sutcliffe etc too long, but if there's ever gonna be a year where we benefit from having guys like that on the list, it's this year.
