It's not about what we get for him or how he'll be remembered.

It's about the 2017 flag and how our chances of winning it have halved.

surely every player can move 10k from this year to next year and we'll retire the big 4 or more at the end of 2017.

It's just a bad move.
We are rebuilding this is the start of the process true we might drop off next year but as one era finishes another one starts as history shows the measure of a club is how long it takes to build the next successful era and we have done it best in the past .Sentimentality is a great thing but sentimentality would've had Gary Ayres get the nod ahead of AC back in 2005 look how that has turned out .Our club admin is widely regarded as the best in the business at what they do from coaching to recruiting to player management to sponsership it's the envy of the league ,time to have faith and let them do their job IMO.

The last line. It's about what is best for the club in 3 years time.

Heard this alot today. Genuine question....how is it best for the club in 3 yrs time? The supposed coaching succession plan?

Sam will have no problem transitioning to life after footy, he has been doing the groundwork already (coaching certification, MBA I think as well). Any club would take him on as an assistant coach, he's also a good media performer. This trade is not about helping Sam.

Well it ain't about helping Hawthorn!

If it were to free salary Cap would have thought one of our small forwards would have made way. We have an abundance with good trade value. Loosing Mitchell may mean were bottom 8 next year. Good thing is Lovell, JOR, burton will get games. Gibbo, Hodge & Burger will all retire some time next year. Could we be clearing the decks for a mini rebuild, so we don't fall off the cliff too far. Tough decisions was always going to be made. Cats did it, just missed out on a premiership. Probably win it next year with danger, selwood & delideo.

It's about the bigger picture and that is injecting younger players into the mix. In fact having all of Hodge Gibbo and Burgoyne play on next year could bite us in the backside. Although Sammy having just won B&F makes it harder to comprehend. And if we now manage to get JOM and he comes good losing Sammy should impact us too much.

Gee, Shattered like all Hawthorn fans must be. Sad day. What a class act but, what a class act he, Clarko and Simpson are. This is about making tough calls for the benefit of Sam and HFC. Maybe Sam feels he needs a new challenge and environment at the end of his career to motivate him. Perhaps he feels he needs exposure to another football club to benefit his coaching aspirations long term.

For HFC, perhaps this is accepting a mini-rebuild is required. Nothing drastic like dropping out. But perhaps staying competitive for the top 6 - 8 whilst loading up for our next generation of premiership stars. That's what my head says. My heart says, yesterday I was thinking of a midfield of O'Meara, T.Mitchell and S.Mitchell tearing teams apart and kicking it lace out to big Rough, with even Vickery clunking a few. Yesterday I was thinking we are a realistic chance of pushing for a flag in 2017...

Shattered.

I'm pretty sure Mitchell hit a trigger to get his new deal. Maybe he's on a lot more than Gibson, Hodge and Burgoyne who signed extensions this year taking less.

For such a smart club, it feels like such a dumb move. Of all our older players, Sam is by far the least expendable. The stats don't lie. Would have much preferred any one or two of the other older players to go instead. Granted, I'm not privy to contracts etc. but this decision just doesn't sit well with me or most footy supporters in general. The proposed compensation is insulting & the reasoning is somewhat flawed! If it does go ahead, all other Hawks trades will feel tainted to me. At least I had 12 months to prepare with Buddy.

Got to feel for the kid who get selected at pick whatever Sammy gets us. Will forever be that guy we got for our champion, quite some burden.:(
Maybe jarman f/s pick?

I've just been crying all day... Cannot believe that I won't get to watch the best player I've seen represent the club chaired off in his last game. I don't agree that he only has 1 year left. It might be easier to take if his form had dropped ir if we got something good in return. Hodge and Gibson looked so slow this year as did Lewis while Mitchell was still 4 steps ahead of everyone in the comp.

Vickery, Tom Mitchell and O'meara better be bloody superstars for us and deliver flags.

I'm ok with this. Don't get me wrong, my first preference is for him to stay but I can see the benefits to this as well. Reminds me of N.Thompson and J.Hay. Get the old out, rebuild and go again. Mitchell is professional enough to understand. Pure champ.

Totally different situation as Thompson and Hay netted us 1st Round Picks in a period where we were not in a Premiership window.
