Yeah but then we could develop them for 4 years and then trade them for the NEXT potential Fyfe. We could have an endless stream of potential Fyfe's being developed for 4 years. I can't fault this strategy to get... until 1 of the picks fail.

Very much so. European football/NFL trends are certainly coming down under. I have a feeling Freo and Wet Coast for that fact will be in the haves - not the have not's. WA teams will certainly be no minnows in the future in regards to financial clout and locally produced talent.

I also think that drafting homegrown talent , particularly WA sides, will be preferable because of free agency.
For example, I believe there is virtually nil chance of Fyfe or Sandilands ever moving via free agency. not withstanding Sandi's basically done now, but you get my point.

We only need a SC for equalisation. The bottom sides would bounce back much faster if there was no restriction on list sizes i.e. If you can fit 80 players in your cap then you should be able to do and not be forced to pay spuds more then they are worth.

Perhaps at the conclusion of the draft the bottom four teams could continue drafting an extra 5 players each. provided they were only paid the minimum draftee wage.

Just get rid of the draft it is actually a restraint of trade , the NRL goes alright with out one and just a SC.

actually quite a good idea i rekon, or at least make it between 40 - 55 players, 80 sure as heel a stretch, make a slightly bigger salary cap (VERY SLIGHTLY) and sides have options to go high top end or really all round or lots of little and 1 by 1 pick who to keep.

The AFL were fighting a losing battle with the players association over Free Agency.
They were always going to get it and really, the players deserve it .

IMO the FA provisions are about as good as Demetriou could get, and seem both fair to the clubs and the players.
If we are going to have the draft, then free agency has to go with it.
