I think Melbourne did a good job of bottling up our Midfielders. Neitz and Bruce played extremely well (Jako and Greeny played extremely bad) and gave them a real focal point. I liked the way young Davey played but I think he will be a bit like the McGrath boys, there one week gone the next.

I do not have time to give you a full wrap up today, I have an assignment due next week and study group to prepare for, however Woosha needs to hang his head in shame about the way he has handleed Neitz Jako match up. Jako clearly was not up to it from fist qtr on and Woosha should have made the change and put Lynch on Neitz.
I think he really did not do Lycnh any favours by not placing him on the best forward and seeing how he copes. Its pre-season after all and he should have used that opportunity to see how he handles it and how much he can learn from Neitz.
As far as Green is concerned he was jumping at shadows all night and the mark he dropped in the first quarter was a disgrace. It cost us a goal and we ended up scoring a goal... If he had taken that mark there was 50 meters of clear space in front of him and we were away.
I was rapt with Johnson and Lynch too especially their physical presence around the pack. Lynch kicikng both long and short was a highlight, cannot remember him turing the ball over, though he should mix up his kick ins a bit as Deamons caught on th what he was doing after a while.
My favorite play of the day was on my wing when Coxy ran hard to make a contest with Melb midfielder spoiling his mark, then kept up with him and giving him a beautiful hip and shouldering him off the ball, and then shepparding, allowing Embley to pick up the ball and deliver into the forward line. He worked supper hard and if the forward that marked Embleys kick had kicked truelly the result may have been different. It was a real team lifting effort.
I though Clancy's effort after being taken out by Neitz deseres a mention too. It was corageous of him to come back on tho the ground after getting shallacked.
Ok got to go now but will continue my rant later tonight...or ptomorrow at latest.
Who else here thinks the Eagles cruised at about 50% last night and Melbourne were slogging their guts out? Seriously... its February not August. Its the Wizard Cup. Yeah it would have been nice to win only because we could have gone to watch them on TV next week but really What would you rather? Another serious game next week against a Geelong/Carlton side who are also going to be trying their guts out physically to win or a nice easy scratch match against another team where we can play our youngsters and rest some of the guys before the start of the real stuff? I think I know in 5 weeks what the answer will be when the Wizard Cup is just a faint memory. Remember the Crows winning it last year? Didn't help them out too much did it.Originally posted by Stakes

Jako was floundering...he should have made the change...it would have given Lynchy some experiance playing on one of the competitions best forwards.

I'd tend to agree with your statement Stakes. Would like the young KP players to stand up and be counted as development roles throughout this season to give us a genuine crack at 2005-2006.Originally posted by Stakes

Like someone said to me... Australian Rules is the only sport in the world they can think of where people take the pre-season practice matches so seriously. Nearly every other sport in the world the pre-season is exactly that. Muck around to get you ready for the real stuff.

I don't buy the idea that we are playing great when we win and just cruising at 50% when we lose. I'm sure Woosha wanted us to win and win well. I agree with Rocco Jones. It's the same old Eagles and I suspect this year it's going to be a repeat of the last couple of years, specially at the end of the year when after so much travelling the players are tired. To win a premiership from Perth we need more than a good team. We need a fantastic team just like the Eagles of 92 and 94. We're going to be competitive, we'll enjoy great wins, we will probably make the eight, but I don't think a premiership is within our grasp, because we can't get the great players we need to fill every single position in the team. We did that in 92 and 94 but now I don't think that is possible. I could once again explain my reasons but I won't because I said enough about it in the past and I also don't have the time to sustain another battle of ideas.

As a side, I think we're about where the premiership team was in 1990 or thereabouts. I'm confident we have all the tools to win a flag, its just a question of letting the young guys develop together and mesh as a unit.

You people do realise we were missing Banfield, Braun, Carroll, Collica, Gardiner, Gaspar, Glass, Hunter, Jones, Matera, and Wooden? Probably 11 players that would be the first picked in the team.
No use overreacting to a scratch match.

Not quite, you can scrub Carroll and maybe Banfield & Collica from that list. Even so, it's obvious there was no desperation to win the game as compared to Melbourne. I'm happy as long as Woosha gives everyone a run in the remaining practise games.
