On further reading - it's amazing how bad the analysis was for team selection. Boiled down to not much more than "don't pick a young bloke because he's not racking up ball the WAFL like James Walker".

Shit, if that was the reasoning this year, Dodd and Schammer would have gotten a game ahead of players like De Boer and Roberton - both of whom contributed far more than those two in important matches.

How atrocious was Matt Carr that year?

Who were the young players on the list in 2007 though Clay, the cupboard was practically bare.

2003 draft -
Mundy - regular in 2007
Murphy - semi-regular/replaced by tarrant
Campbell - Pretty low on the batting order
Peake - Regular in 2007

2004 Draft -
3 dud picks (was in Edgecumbe, Doswell and ???)

2005 Draft -
Drum, Warnock and Ibbo - All 3 would have played around a half dozen games in '07 ??

2006 Draft -
Collard, Mourish and Brock - Three duds.

That's a whole other story Dom, but what Clay was saying was the mentality of some posters that a young guy shouldn't get a gig in the firsts unless they regularly dominate in the WAFL which is just plain wrong.

Doubt he posts, he had that dockerland mentality where anyone who criticises any aspect of the club is wrong so he'd be easy to pick.
Suspicious user, really. Appears at the start of 2006, when Connolly is under the most pump, disappears half way through 2008 near where Schwab pulls the pin.

Maybe he was Schwabby?

It a big case of what might have been, though. Not saying some of those players weren't utter duds, but just looking at who debuted in 2007 under Connolly is pretty instructive.

Ibbo and Collard both played a game each in 2007. Each scored a goal and got 7 and 4 touches respectively, then were subsequently dropped.

Turn it around to 2009-10, and we've had a number of players debut who've done much the same - scored a goal and had sub ten numbers statswise. If the requirement for them had been to rack up Jimmy Walker / Schammer ball in the WAFL, would they even be playing today? Hill, Mora, etc aren't that kind of player. Everyone except Barlow would still be in the WAFL.

What happens then? If Hill, Suban or Mora had rot in the WAFL these past one-two years, people would be calling them duds now.

Yep, good point CD. :thumbsu:

Possibly. That young dude Dwayo was definately related to CC, he posts as a Melbourne supporter now.

There were a few posters pushing agendas and quite privy to the internal politics of the club posting this board back in the day, who all promptly disappeared towards the close of 2008. The only one to really stick around and defend the Schwab/Connolly era as some kind of golden age was Ripper.

I don't think Roundhouse even posts on Dockerland anymore.

Freo' have thankfully come a long way since the Schwabolly era. Great to reflect back and seen positive changes made to our club.

I didn't think Ripper was a Schwabolly fan so much Clay...

I don't know, apart from Ripper, Gav56 was very vocal of his support of CC and Schwabby and early condemnation of Harves.

That was tempered as the seasons went on and it became apparent how bad the list was. Maybe Gav should step in here.

Ripper stayed wedded to the idea that CC and Schwab were the best thing for Fremantle until the Illumanti abducted him for revealing one of their secrets regarding monetary policy and the environment.

You're not serious, are you? Schwab was his avatar for a while there.

lol, that was partly my fault. We had that tipping comp a few seasons back where the weekly winner got to pick the avatar for the weekly loser so I found that pic of Schwabb but it back fired because Ripper stuck with it for 2 or 3 months and that was when Ripper was posting 20+ times a day so i couldn't avoid it.

Here's the pic, creepy looking mutha trucka -

hehehe retrospect :)

Whoa I got that one right at least! I remember Connolly's last game as coach well. His love child Scott Thornton narrowly missed a kick on goal to win the game in the last minute, and that was all she wrote.

2008 and 2009 weren't much cop though, were they? :(

It's quite funny how things change. I remember back in '04 people were demanding Murphy get a game, hailing him as the next mesiah.

It does bring up an interesting point and a sharp contrast to coaching methods. CC seemed always to be playing favourites. I recall each week someone would get a game and I would be asking myself how he warranted another run based on the previous weeks effort. Looking back CC was either trying to protect the kids or was confident in the playing group put out there were going to get it right eventually.

Perhaps if he had been more like Harves and played people on merit regardless of age/experience some of those players may have turned out differently and would the fortunes of the club.

I am firm believer that you dont not improve dramatically by playing against those of the same or lesser skill. You improve my playing against people who are ten times better than yourself because you have to.

Nice thread, funny when you see posters that have since changed camp address Freo as we. They really didn't get it, not in their blood.

People actually do that?! That just doesn't make sense.. You'd be better off creating a new account or something than be known as a ship jumper.

Tell me about it, but there are 2 of them just in this thread.

Black Ball (GWS) and Jarman (WB)
