Because the Sandy seniors had the bye this weekend the reserves featured a fair few MFC players. This is the report I posted on MFC Flame yesterday, it might help with discussion as to who we promote after today's debacle....
Ok so it was only the two's & Willi had nobody of note in but Sandy played a very good 2nd half. Having said that Sandy were very poor in the 2nd quarter while kicking with a fairly strong breeze. I missed the first term (bloody 471 bus route!) but I assume that Sandy were relatively poor as they were outscored 0.0 to 4.6.
At half time things weren't looking good at all, The Seagulls had adapted to the conditions better & were running harder & more importantly playing as a team. Sandy were playing like a bunch of strangers & in some ways that's exactly what they were. I had thought Sandy would belt Willi because of the talent in the Sandy team but possibly to much was being left to too few. Johnson & McLean were playing their first games with the reserves & in McLean's case his last!
Sandy gelled better in the 3rd term & worked a lot harder into the breeze. Carson's kick off the ground in the goalsquare was the game's first goal into the wind. Sandy won the quarter & looked set to run Willi over in the last term. The 3 qtr time huddle was very positive, McLean in particular was very vocal. The instructions were to go long with the breeze to Carson, with the idea being one direct kick out of the middle wins you a shot at goal.
Early in the last term it just wasn't happening for Sandy however & The Seagulls pinched the early goal. At the 18 minute mark Sandy looked shot, Will had already gone one better than the Zeb's into the breeze & Sandy had lost ground. All of a sudden Sandy clicked, Ott fed the midfield & they pumped it long & strong inside 50. McLean hit Sylvia on the lead & Carson kicked an impossible goal from the dead pocket. Biddlecombe ran on to a ball inside 50 & kicked truly & Sandy were irresistable.
McLean was impressive all day & once again didn't waste a possesion.
Molan was lively & mobile, 3 solid quarters.
Sylvia was anonymous until the last 10 minutes & played almost exclusively as a forward. He dropped a few marks he should've taken but he did show some class at the end.
Ferguson had a solid 4 quarters down back & took some good marks.
Johnson was quiet but did kick a very nice goal.
Carson struggled early but stood up in the 2nd half.
Campbell was AWOL, I have no idea why he didn't play.
