Thought I'd start the discussion for this weekend's games.

The first news I have it that Chad Gibson is out of the Legs team to face Glenelg as he is injured. Unfortunately it's getting a little bit predictable now; he simply must string a few games together in order to really gauge where he’s at.

Ok tomorrow afternoon Norwood face Glenelg at the Parade. It will be one of the games of the season as both teams need a win in order to put themselves in the top 5. And it’s being televised on ABC TV, but if you’ve got nothing else better to do then get down there.

John Meesen will be up against Trevor Cranston and Daniel Kirk, and Tim Nicholas has been sent down to the reserves which means Meese will have a petty big workload, but I’m sure a man of his talent will be able to handle it. He’s been in pretty good form, coming off 13 possessions and 17 hit-outs last week. Meesen in actually 6th in the league for hit-outs at an average of 13 per game. Watch him dominate the game around the ground, and help out the defence by pushing down into the backline. What he also likes to do is to hand off the ruck duties to a KPP while he stands a kick behind play ready to thwart any attempt forward by the opposition.

Now this game features our two first round draft picks in the 2005 Draft. While everyone has been praising Douglas all season Pfieffer has slipped under the radar and hasn’t had much focus. That of course is due to his long term back injury but he’s back fit and firing now. Last time I saw Douglas play he destroyed us across the forward line but he’s obviously taken his game further and should be great to see. However Pfieffer is just as good a talent and will destroy the Bays coming off the wing tomorrow.

Now Hinge has been labeled as a potential delistee by the majority on this board but I think he has something offer as a small defender. There’s no doubt he’s not going to be a star but I believe he could become a player similar to Massie and Torney. He was in the best last week so he’s in decent touch.

Now there are a few players to keep your eye on:

* Adam Cockshell who wears No.1; he’s 199cm and 102kg. He’s our FF and has played 8 games and kicked 16 goals. He has just about the best pair of hands I’ve seen, and he is prone to taking a few hangers every game. The only problem is his kicking for goal; he has a tendency to spray a few easy shots. Could be a potential draftee this year.

* Gavin Hughes (No.42) who is 20 years old and 180cm and plays on the wing. He’s the quickest player in the league and is extremely damaging on the wing. He's a ball magnet and can just tear teams apart with his speed and foot skills.

* Bryce Campbell (No.6), 21 y/o, who is one of the toughest, most courageous players in the competition. He has brilliant hands and is exceptional overhead for his size, and is the fiercest tackler around. Keep an eye on these guys because they are definitely worthy of being looked at by the Crows.

Think I'll be watching this one to see how accurate Drummond is. Good resume Drummond.

Didn't anyone watch the game?

Well we lost, because:

A) We couldn't finish in front of goal,
B) We couldn't tackle,
C) The umpires were a farce.

Meesen was terrific, had to do a ton of work as we didn't have a backup ruckman other than Bown who was needed up forward. He worked tirelessly around the ground, got a few clearances, and had a few tackles, one which resulted in a holding the ball. Possessions wise he probably had 10-15 (on closer inspection a tad less than 10), not one of his busiest games stats wise but his effort today was brilliant.

Pheiffer was very good in the first half, and kicked his second goal of the game in the third quarter but otherwise he was held well by Hinge. Pheiffer was pretty good though, probably had about 20 possessions and took some very strong grabs too. But I thought Hinge was actually one of the better defenders for the Bays today. He definitely has a bright future and I would love to see the Crows retain him for another year.

Douglas was effective across the half forward line once again, not sure how many possessions he had though. I walked by him at 3 quarter time and I couldn’t believe how small he is, pretty tiny lad. But he had a good game and spent a little time up against Power listed defender Lower.

My man Bryce Campbell was terrific, anyone catch his tackle on the wing which was holding the ball? Awesome chase. :D He's a gun, no doubt AFL quality and I'll be very disappointed if the Crows didn't look at him. Cockshell took some fine grabs once again but as usual, cannot kick for goal. If he could fix his kicking then he could be an exceptional forward. Gavin Hughes did some great things when coming onto the ground last in the first quarter, and was one of the reasons we got back into the contest. However he made some awful clangers in the final quarter and had a reasonably quiet game by his standards.

Where abouts were you at the ground? I taped the game, so I might be able to spot you. :D

On the wing... ;)

You would be able to spot me, it's all about knowing who I am... ;) :p

Hmm, if I am bored enough, I might take a few pictures of the wing on screen when the ball is near there. Other people that know you can point you out for me. :p

Drummond, what do you think of the possibility of Cockshell playing FB? I think he would be a gun there.

Interesting suggestion that. He has huge potential; has just about the best pair of hands I’ve seen, but it’s just his goal kicking that is letting him down. I don’t have much confidence when he lines up, tends to spray it all over the place. He’s played 9 games now and has kicked 18 odd goals, so he’s had a very solid start to his league career.

To be honest I don’t know how he would go as a defender, he’s quite quick and has a big leap, but he just looks comfortable leading out of the square at this stage. He’s still only 19 and could develop into a good KPP; he also did a bit of work in the ruck today. His opponent was pretty much holding onto him all day though. :thumbsd:

Drummond loves his redlegs a little too much, but he's one of the most vocal and passionate supporters of the SANFL you'll find.

Yeah I didn't get to watch the game today unfortunately due to work. But the times I've seen Cockshell, it was a thought that passed through my mind. I think he could also play CHB cos he certainly has the skills for my money. Just can't seem to deal with the pressure on goal. Physically his game is fine.

And the problem with that is? At least he turns up when his team aint travelling so well unlike a lot of other teams 'fans' I know........

I only saw the 2nd half of the Bays v Redlegs game:

Pfeiffer. Kicked a nice goal, hardly sighted.
Douglas - Hardly sighted.
Hinge - Meh.
Meesen - Was quite impressed. Nice and aggressive. Took a nice grab. I just hope there were more than just one Vic scouts at the game so he may go in a bidding war.

Pfeiffer kicked two goals, one a brilliant roving goal and the other a goal 40 metres out on the run. Took three great contested marks in the first half but struggled after half time. Hinge was moved onto him...

Douglas was good in the second quarter but was extremely quiet after half time. And it sounds as thought you've given up on Meesen returning next year...

• Hudson had 14 possessions, 4 marks, and 16 hit-outs
• Welsh 10 possessions, 6 marks, 3 goals
• Perrie 18 possessions, 5 marks.

Hudson :)

Good to see Griffin playing seniors as well, now just needs to do something.

His ruck work in the centre has been good. Around the ground, he has been Ok. He'a got a massive kick. He was better last week against Souths. He dropped back in defence against Sturt and the ball didnt get down there too much.

So by the sounds of it, the Bays just fell in by 40 odd points, totally undeserving winners?

Nobody likes a sore loser Drummond :D

I actually saw Darren Crocker at the game. Whether he was there running his eye over possible draftees or John Meesen, suppose time will tell.

Drummond was pretty much spot on with his review. Being a Bays supporter, I can understand his frustration at the umpires, we seemed to get quite a few favourable calls.

As for Meesen, controlled the ruck. My question is, why does Trevor Hill always bench him to rest him. Why doesn't he shift him up forward? Nice mark in the centre of the ground.

Drummond was also right about Pfeiffer. Had a significant impact in the first half. Impressed me with his skills and marking ability. Once Hinge went on him, his impact was nullified. I do agree Hinge most definately deserves another year on the list. Would be a good matchup for any medium sized forwards in a future Crows team.

As for Douglas, hasn't seen as much of the ball as he did prior to his knee injury. One passage of play his poise and football brain was quite evident. Through the middle of the ground a contested ball took an awkward, high bounce, from memory Dougie held off attacking the ball as Redlegs player attacked it but went over his reach, Dougie snaffled it a delivered it up forward. Sure he doesn't have much size but he does have a poise and a footy brain, something you can't teach...

That Bryce Campbell holding the ball was great. I didn't have a record, so I was wondering who this No. 6 was tearing around the ground. Looks the goods. So does Gavin Hughes, thought he looked sharp too.

And by the way Drummond I saw you at the game on the wing. Were you the dude wearing the #17 legs guernsey and blowing kisses in the direction of Meesen and Pfeiffer all day.... :D

P.S. Did anyone also see that Glenelg supporter who wears this orange Russell Athletic sweater and grey trackies that are pulled up to his armpits?!?!

Yeh I don’t understand why Meesen had so many spells on the bench. When he was resting in the last quarter and Bown was in the ruck you destroyed us in the clearances and when Meesen finally returned to the ground you were up by 7 goals. He’s quick and has got a good pair of hands, so I agree with you; he definitely should’ve spent some time in the forward line. It was stupid to drop Nicholas though as it would have allowed him to spend more time resting up forward.

I completely agree with what you said about Douglas. Didn’t have a huge influence on the game, but my word he’s a smart player. Really assesses a situation quickly and always does the right thing. He appears to be the kind of player who doesn’t need a lot of the ball to have a major influence. He’s a great team player too, applied a few sheperds and applied some good pressure. That one play where he tapped the ball over the head of the Legs player and ended up the ball was fantastic, it resulted in a goal.

And interestingly enough the Legs are 4-1 with Gibson in the side, and 4-7 without him. He adds structure to the side and we look far more dangerous with him roaming the forward line. He’s essential to our forward line so I hope he can get his body right.
