Round 3 2009

Saturday 11th April

South v Norwood - Encounter Bay

* Aaron Kite still finds himself in the reserves, as does youngster Will Young. For South Shaun McKernan should line up at CHF or perhaps in defence. And gunnish X-Factor future superstar of the competition Myke Cook will play his 2nd SANFL league game and people are expected to come from all over the state to see him play.

Sturt v West - Unley

* Brodie Martin will line-up on the wing for Sturt and Tom Lee is in the reserves. For West the leagues best rookie Chris Schmidt is named on ball and Brad “living on borrowed time” Moran is in the ruck.

North v Port - Prospect

* Phil Davis is named on the bench for North and Tony Armstrong is named across the back flank.

Eagles v Glenelg - Woodville (ABC TV)

* Jarrhan Jacky is named on the half forward flank while for Glenelg Brian “who?” Donnelly will play in the reserves.

Bye – Central

I wonder which of the emergencies (if any) will drop out. Sellar will almost certainly travel as there is some doubt over Stevens and Tippett who got hurt at training. Griffin is IMO the most likely to play SANFL this weekend as he would gain more by having another confidence boosting hitout with centrals.

Encounter Bay...is that Victor Harbor?

I feel sorry for Griffin. Perform well in a few games close to a call up. Then the bye comes in for Centrals.

Will he take the bye or go to West's Ressies?

Does any AFL listed player deserve to have to play Reserves for West? It will be hard to keep him at the end of the year if that's the treatment he gets

He'll be playing by himself then if Centrals have the bye as reported ;)

What's with the Donnelly hate Drum?

Club was always happy to have Donelly play a full season in the reserves .....that was the expectation

What the heck is up with Cook?

Not named for South Adelaide. Did he sustain an injury on the track or something?

I for one would of found it phenomenal if he had broken into any league team let alone Glenelg's after two games of footy!
Donnelly won't make it. I didn't expect him to make the seniors but if there was a level below the reserves he would be there. Fortunately for him, there isn't.

Mate players only ever play for the lowest ranked reserves side when coming back from injury and are in need of match pracise, any other time they just have a weekend off.

Anyways, we are taking our full squad of 25 over due to the number of players with fitness clouds.

Argh, if it's anything which starts with an 'h' i don't want to hear it:(

Just out of interest have you seen him play yet?

Yeh would be pretty bad it he's done the hamstring. Lets hope not.

I have only seen him on the clips provided by the AFC. He turns 21 in a few months, hasn't played the game before, looks like an unco, you're telling me he's better than say some young SANFL footballer like Donohue?

Or Pauly Pup, or Littler or countless others in the SANFL.

It is indeed, I really do not want Norwood playing on it, reports on the Norwood forum this week are saying it is far from SANFL standard, better not get any injuries or I will be mad.

Gee, that's odd. I hadn't heard of anything wrong with Cook. It might explain why he wasn't named as an emergency this week.

Either that or someone has pulled out and we're naming Cook as a "new" emergency... can you do that if the game is still two days away?

I'm not sure how I feel with Donnelly. Considering the club didn't even take on a full set of rookies because they couldn't find anyone worth picking up, you'd hope that Donnelly would have something. Of course, it's a bit hard to say he's behind expectations at the moment because expectations are for him to play at reserve level, which is the lowest possible rung. (I'm assuming he can't get dropped from the reserves?) Still, I'd like to see him steadily improve. Getting a handfull of possessions is not encouraging.

Yeah, it's more than possible that we're taking him along as effectively a fourth emergency, but in that case we'd cop a fine if we played him.

God no, odds are he's one of if not the worst SANFL footballer.

However, it's the rookie list, it's all about scope for improvement which Donnelly would have far greater than anyone in the SANFL.

I mean hell, come Round 2 last year remember the crap that Martin was being given? Granted he's perhaps half way there at best, but he's doing a hell of alot better then many on here predicted, without naming names of course;)

I disagree. He might be a good athlete but I think there is this perception he must have enormous upside purely because he's Irish. I'm sure to a certain degree he has some, anyone would who is new to the game and is learning the craft, but I think the amount if being blown out of proportion.

When you claim that Donnelly would have far greater upside of anyone in the SANFL I think you are doing two things. Firstly you are overrating his upside and secondly you are underrating and being pretty ignorant of the talent running around in the SANFL. If he becomes as good a player as Donohue, Littler, heck even Toby Schulz (;)) who can't even crack a league game then he's done well.

And as for Martin, sure he's come a long way, sure your wink was aimed at me because I wrote him off but he'll be off the list at years end so no big embarrassment.

I didn't say upside, I said scope for improvement. He has a lot more improvement in him than Schulz or anyone else for that matter, this is simple.

Upside, well I don't think either of us, having never seen a game of his can comment on that despite our own perceptions.

And as for Martin he's not on the main list now, and I think he will be at year's end. His rate of improvement has been dramatic and will only continue.

I agree that we shouldn't assume he's got an awesome talent base because he's Irish as I for one was against the pervading logic on the board that we should sign an Irishman. However, now that he's on our list we might as well give him beyond two games of a new sport to have a crack at it ;)

He does have the greatest scope for improvement, but that's only because he's yet to develop the ability of even the weakest reserves players. If anything, saying he has the greatest scope for improvement is an indictment.

I'm not convinced that Martin will be off the list at the year's end but he will have to show further improvement soon to avoid it because his current form is not enough to justify a third year on the rookie list, let alone a promotion.
