Round 9:

Saturday 22nd May
Sturt v Port @ Unley

Banished back to the SANFL, Matthew Jaensch reassumes his favoured position at the Double Blues, he is named on the wing. I have a feeling Jaensch will bounce back with a strong performance this week. To get back into the Crows team soon, he may need to steal the naked photos of Craigy which Michael Doughty is currently holding for ransom. After a spectacular league debut, Aiden Riley has been named on the interchange bench. The rust haired ball magnet will look to prove his debut was no flash in the pan.

After last Saturday on the gas, Graham Johncock finds himself in the back pocket for the Magpies. Let's hope he responds the way he did to his demotion in 2008 with a strong performance.

North v West @ Prospect (ABC TV)

Once again, Matt Wright has the left forward pocket for North locked down. He broke into the SANFL as a promising goal-sneak, let's hope he bags a few tomorrow and uses the ball well. In an ominous sign, Tony Armstrong has been named in the back pocket for the *****. If we seem him on TV, we will know that either one of Gunston, Young or Griffin will play. If he does play, he may match up on the dangerous Fort Caruso. The lovechild of cmndstab, Rory Sloane will man a defensive post, he is slotted in on the HBF. I am sure Stabby will gaze lovingly over Sloane's performance, just like Drummond drooling over Kate Collins during the 6 o'clock news.

South v Glenelg @ Noarlunga

The dynamic SANFL duo of Shaun McKernan and Daniel Talia resume duties again for the Panthers. McKernan has been stationed in the forward pocket this week and will probably get Sam Rudolph or Danny Meyer trying to contain his awesomeness. Talia has been named at CHB for Ranny's mob and will have the tough task of trying to stop Ruory Kirkby from taking contested marks.

James Sellar will play deputy in the ruck to Trevor Cranston once again, Jimmy will start the game on the Interchange. You never know he could spend some time against SMACK, either in the ruck or in defence. Should be a good battle.

Central v Eagles @ Elizabeth

The human spring, Ricky Henderson will be roaming the HFF for the Dogs at the expanses of Hamra Homes Oval. With Gunston and Griffin not named in the 23 you would think they won't play Saturday and are emergencies for Sunday. Brad Symes will play his first competitive game of football for 2010, with an instant recall to the wing. I wonder how much game time he will play? Reserves specialist Brian Donnelly will look to dominate against what will be some handy country football recruits for 2011.

Jarrhan Jacky Watch: Not named once again as his hamstrings can't obviously deal with his offensive running abilities. It's a shame though, I would have set my alarm for 5:30am to watch the Jacky v Donnelly I spectacular in beautiful Elizabeth. :(

Norwood bye (Young)

Good stuff neddy! Sturt v Port @ Unley would have been good if it was the ABC game with Jaensch and Johncock. Good to see Symes back

:D :thumbsu: Love your work!

Phil Harper said that Graham Johncock will miss this week’s match for the Port Adelaide Magpies and Bernie Vince looks like missing next week as well for the Eagles.

Anyone know how Henderson and Sloane are going?

Also the commentator on rph radio, said that Brad Symes started slowly but has picked up the pace and was playing really well by 1/2 time.

Smack and Sellar playing well at all CG, or just goals and that's it?

Have they gone head to head?

They haven't been too bad. Smacks probably been the better of the two in the ruck one on one. He added another goal to his tally in the third.

South are getting smashed, 47-111.

I thought his fitness looked really good, numerous times he was running from defence giving an option but was generally burnt.

Didnt seem to be puffing too much when given a rest.

I think he should come back in, you always know he will bust his arse which is more than wat we can ask for from Griff.

Neil Craig has NFI.

How on earth was Armstrong dropped. Actually thought he was injured when I heard he was out the side, then I see him turn up for North today.

How Myke Cook retains his spot on a wing in front of Armstrong is completely and untterly beyond me.

The selction criteria must be the following;

In: Poor disposal, panicking under pressure, flailing arms about (Cook amongst others)
Out: Someone who can actually kick the ball, skills, pace, football smarts (Armstrong)

Watching Armstrong today what stood out is how balanced and skillful he is by foot...either side! I don't think he is a defender, but attacking half back come wing is where he should be. I just spent the whole match shaking my head at this mind boggling decision.

Sloane was pretty much out of it for mst the game. Is it his second game back? Looked like someone who needs to regain some confidence.

Must admit, after seeing Armstrong do in the last quarter what Cook has failed to do all season, I was wondering why it had taken so long to discover this.

Equally baffled as to why he was cut ahead of Myke 'Rainmaker' Cook this week, given he has demonstrated an ability that Cook is probably never going to have. Short of run and carry, we send away the guy with run and carry in favour of a guy with no thought speed, no kicking skills and talent that does not exceed the SANFL level.

Cook must have better "training form"

Well think about it, when the Crows train they have no opponents, and that fits into how Neil Craig devised the Crows gameplan as if they have no opponents.

It doesn't surprise me that the guy values training "form" so highly when he seemingly refuses to acknowledge what the opposition can do. Which you know is fine if you're the greatest team in the universe, or every other team puts on no pressure. But kind of stinks when your contested football and clearances are shit house.

Ok well as you can tell I travelled down to Noarlunga today and saw the Bays smash the Panthers. The final score was:

South Adelaide 5.2 5.37.5 11.8 74
Glenelg 2.5 11.7 17.9 18.13 121

First up I'll have a look at young Daniel Talia's game. He played out the whole game at half back but I thought he looked below 100% for most of the day. I reckon he only sprinted once or twice and lagged behind his opponent on a number of occasions. I initially thought he was just having a bad day until someone next to me said something like, 'Never play an injured player'. In other words I don't think his calf was quite right. He was able to finish off the game on a high note with a strong last quarter where most notably he took two strong contested grabs after being behind his opponent in the air all day.

I counted for him:
2 kicks, 10 handballs, 4 marks, 1 tackle.

Shaun McKernan, as usual, played in the ruck and deep at full forward. He started each quarter in the forward line, would then move into the ruck for 5-10 minutes and then end back at FF. He kicked two goals in the first quarter and his third in the third term. All were scored within 20 metres from goal, emphasising his tendency to stick in the goal square, and two came after strong grabs. He impressed me once again in the ruck and pipped Sellar in ball ups and throw ins. However when they went toe to toe in the centre circle it was generally pretty even.

My stats for Smack:
7 kicks, 5 marks, 2 tackles, 13 hit outs, 3 goals.

Last but not least James Sellar featured mainly in the ruck and up forward for Glenelg. He had a quiet opening quarter and spent the last 5-10 minutes on the bench. He came on in the second into the ruck and drifted down forward to kick an easy goal in an open goal square. In between positions and stints on the bench he drifted around the place mainly resting on the wing. He collected a lot of disposals around centre half forward as the Bays had the ball in their half for a fair chunk of the game. I thought he looks like he's carrying just a little bit of extra weight but it didn't seem to hamper him too much. I don't think he really had a solid work out though as he spent some time on the bench in each term.

Stats:
5 kicks, 7 handballs, 9 marks, 10 hit outs, 1 goal.

I'll put some photos up a little later.
