dont understand why people are raggin on fletcher.

some reasons please fella's?

Don't worry about the general bigfooty pundit. They have no idea about footy and get lost in hatred and bias.

Silvagni first, then Fletcher, then Scarlett.

If Scarlett has a few more years like the current one then he might get to Fletcher and overtake him.

The only problem I have with Scarlett is he plays in an era with no superstar full forwards and is made to look better than he is

SOS then Fletcher then Scarlett.

As a 17/18/19 year old Fletcher played on the same blokes as SOS who were all big strong blokes who would have been too strong to Scarlett.

The fact Fletcher had some success on them puts him in front of Scarlo who is a great player but is made to look better than he is by the way the game is played today.

People should look at Carlton before and after Silvagni retired. In 2001 we were a premiership contender for most of the year, finished sixth and played in a Semi-Final. Next season in 2002, with SOS retired, we finished last and were the worst team in the comp.

Scarlett is a great player but does he shut down power forwards because he routinely beats them, or does he do it because Geelong thrashes everyone through the middle starving forwards of supply, while allowing Scarlett to run off and pretend to be a midfielder?

Interesting fact: Since 2002 Fevola has averaged 3.5 goals a game against Geelong, while his career average rests at 2.8 goals a game.

Your stats are very deceiving.

I'm sure you wouldn't know but Fevola has only surpassed 3 goals "ON" Scarlett once, and it was 2002.

Of his 5 in Rnd 2 of 2004, he only kicked 3 before Scarlett was moved.

Of his 5 in 2005, he only kicked 2 on Scarlett who went off injured.

Of his 4 in 2006, he only kicked 3 on Scarlett who sat out the last 10 minutes.

Scarlett has also been named as BOG or in the best in a number of his head to head's with Fevola. 2003, 2004 (Rnd 17) and 2007.

Your statement about Scarlett shutting guys down is ignorant. Take a look at Scarlett's record prior to 2007. It gets a bit tiring people trying to say "he's only good because of the side he plays in." If you are going to apply such logic to Scarlett then apply it to Silvagni too, I mean was there a year Carlton missed finals or weren't a genuine premiership contender whilst he was there? As I've said again and again, Scarlo forged his reputation in Geelong teams that notoriously struggled with either terrible form or rife inconsistency at any one time. He won a B&F and was named All- Australian in 2003 when Geelong were cellar- dwellars. Realistically, Geelong have been a strong team 2 of the 11 seasons he's been at the club, and Scarlett's been an excellent defender for 9 of those years.

The best full backs

Mathew Scarlett (Cats) I rate the BEST

Jack Regan (Magpies)
Geoff Southby (Blues)
David Dench (Kangaroos)
Kelvin Moore (Hawks))
Dustin Fletcher (Bombers)
Harvey Merrigan (Lions)
Ashley McIntosh (Eagles)
Tassie Johnson (Demons)
Verdun Howell (Saints)

Brian Sarre (Subiaco) also rates highly IMO

Silvagni was a great player but Southby was a better Full Back IMO

Out of those 3 I would pick Scarlet. The guy is dominating at a time where the rules of the game have never been so technical before.

Cant include Fletcher. He never plays on the best forward. If he was such a great Full Back they would not have recruited Mal Michael.

Scarlet. Can't fault him. Fletcher often turns ball over by foot. Silvani was a cheat, just grabbed his man all the time.
Glass goes alright.

If you think for a second that full- backs today grapple and grab and chop like SOS did then it is you sir that have a remarkably short and selective memory.

I never said they "did it like SOS", I said it still happens today. Not only frequently, but a lot of defenders get away with it. Including your very own man. While it is more penalised these days, every defender holds on their opponents, crashes into their backs, etc. This happens every week. It's not like SOS was the only defender in history to ever do this... and yes, he sure did such things but that doesn't take away from his natural abilities which made him such an excellent defender in the first place.

This scragging nonsense is so over hyped. Some people also think that this was the only reason why SOS was any good, which is such an ignorant assertion to make that it hardly warrants attention.
