After reading about some of the great names that have played for this club, I have noticed that no one has mentioned Scott Camporeale in any thread that I have seen. I was wondering on what level you guys rate him? How do you feel about the way he left the club? Does that have any impact on how you rate him (either positively or negatively)?

For me, he was one of my favourite players. Then again, I love every Carlton player... but Camporeale stood out to me. I loved his run and the way he could use the ball.

No doubt Campo was a great player for a long time for us, and during that time we never had an issue with him. It's only the end many remember him for now.

I don't know how it could have been different. I remember how desperate he was to get to Essendon, virtually camped outside PP during trade week. That's not the sign of a simple contract dispute - something was seriously wrong with the relationship between him and the club. God knows there were plenty of reasons to not want to be at Carlton back then - Pagan/Busted-Arse Finances/Crap Administration/Crap Board/Mates Retired.

We're only lucky better players didn't escape. Imagine now if Russell had left when he requested.

Campo's conceit was imagining at 30 he was up to the long-term contract that Sheedy stupidly waved at him. That made him look like a mercenary, but I think Essendon could have offered him 3 years with all the bananas he could eat and he still would have gone.

From our perspective, he did us a favour. He was spent, as his playing record at Windy Hill proved. What we didn't like seeing was him relishing every Bomber victory over us a bit too keenly. Still, he wouldn't be the first ex-player to celebrate getting one over his old club.

He will always be a premiership player, and B&F winner, and that's a hell of a lot more than anyone who criticises him will ever have. I'll always remember him as a great player that for 200 games never gave us a hint of trouble and gave us a lot of thrills with his hard work, pace, and sublime disposal.

Plus I want his twins under the Father-Son rule :D.

I remember being in the club rooms in 1994 and one of the Carlton staff at the time (no idea his name) mentioning to me that there was this skinny SA kid who we were after...history says we took him in the draft and he played in a premiership team the same year.

Camps is a premiership player, but a sook who finished his career at our arch enemies. Nuff said.

Very good player for most of his career, I remember him as a work horse who gut busted to run both ways with top notch finishing. Then in the last few year he really chased cheap kicks and didn't run both ways and tarnished his career some what as a down hill skier.

And that was even before he left Carlton. .. turned into a clear receiver with no effort made to get his own ball. .. Hung around HFF looking for a give off and the flashy goal to take all the credit. .. Early career was decent but later became the type of player I dislike watching. .. The shift to the Bombers and his lackluster efforts (until he played against us) really put his career in perspective for me. ..

Absolutely brilliant career at Carlton but really disappointed with the way someone who should've been a great club man left.

My memory is that he left because of Collins who thought every player should wear our jumper for nothing and refused to negotiate (he did it to Allen as well and could have lost Kouta).

IMO the Collins years were the worst in our history, he did more damage to the club than any previous president (including big Jack who always, at least, bled for the club).

Should be nicknamed "ankles".

I think it is important to acknowledge the first two thirds of his career as very good though Clay to be fair and then yes I agree with your thoughts for his last third, they were shite.

agree with this. Became very smug and acted like a spoilt child. Treated fans with contempt a bit. On his day was very good but faded fast

Was a great player but will never be remebered as such.

Will be known as the traitor and as a selfish player (rightly or wrongly).

Collins had the unfortunate task of having to bring our TPP within the salary cap following the massive breaches overseen by Elliott.

Kouta was on a massive contract because the Lions had made a huge offer to try & get him to Brisbane. Allan was also on a large contract, thanks to his manager (David Allison) threatening to shop him around after Allan had won AA honours.

The reality is we were going to be that far over the salary cap for the 2003 season (& beyond) that if Collins didn't renegotiate the contracts with some of the highest paid players there would have been further penalties from the AFL, not to mention the prospect of not actually being able to afford to pay our players (the $1.5 million loan from the AFL was specifically obtained to honour player payments).

Collins made some tough financial decisions, in line with what the AFL deemed to be non-negotiable aspects of our financial situation, going forward (if we weren't so badly in debt we might not have had to accept the several million dollars we received to move to Etihad Stadium).

Whether the players liked it or not, Collins had to make these decisions to ensure the financial viability of our club & our club will always be bigger than the Koutas, Allans & Campos of this world.

Outstanding player, one of my favourites. Those that were around a few years ago would remember that he was my username for a year or so until he left for the Bombers.

As others have said, unfortunately he is likely to be remembered by most Carlton supporters not for his services to this great club but for the way he conducted himself during his exit. That is very unfortunate, as Campo was an excellent player for us for many years, a premiership player, and a Best and Fairest winner. His on field exploits certainly fit those that are fitting of a better reception than what many give him now.

I for one hope that all the bitterness he held towards the Carlton Football Club in the latter part of his career is now gone. It always leaves a bitter taste in the mouth knowing that a Carlton great has bad relations with the club, so hopefully that has been/will be mended. If nothing else it leaves the option of a father/son recruit open down the track. ;)

Pretty similar responses to what I was expecting. The thing I never really understood though was why was he so desperate to go the Bombers? What was it that messed up the relationship between he and Carlton? Was it purely financial?

Id say;

a) continually being crap
b) Campo continually being heavily tagged
c) Campo having to fight all on his own with no one to protect him
d) hope being lost after many years of being crap

had a lot to do with it. Scott wasnt the first to be fooled by the Essendon media campaign - OUR NEXT FLAG IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER.

Great player in his prime. One thing that stood out for me was that he seemed to get more free kicks playing for the red & black scum than for the Blues.

If my memory serves me correctly we were only prepared to offer him a 1 year contract, given he was in the twilight years of his career & he hadn't exactly set the world on fire in 2005, whereas Essendon were prepared to offer him 2 years (Sheedy was trying to save his own arse & was trying to avoid Essendon bottoming out for any length of time).

Was asked when he finished being an assistant at Essendon whether hed like to be remember as a blue or a bomber.

He replied" Il always be a blueboy".

Whatever he said though does not change the fact that he was a champion of the club.

Pagan must have been a big reason for Campo wanting out. You only had to look at Corey McKernan to see what too much Pagan did to someone. When Pagan came to Carlton it was like someone had drained all the blood out of poor Corey. He couldn't get back to North quick enough.

Was a special kind of irony that. .. Left North to escape Pagan amongst other things. .. Pagan followed him to Carlton. .. Poor bloke. ..

I loved watching this skinny kid run around gather the ball and deliver it with surgical precision.

Then I just remember him being a traitor dog.

"Great' - NO. "Outstanding" - NO. A good player. To give him more than that diminishes those deserving of these accolades.

I Remember David King (Biggest wanna be tough guy ever) having a crack at him in 95 I think it was a home & away game, Fraser Brown trundled over and gave King a shove and boy did King leave the scene in a real hurry.
Campo was a very good player in a very good team and towards the end at Carlton an average player in very average team.
Was always worth a $10 investment for first goal of the game which he delivered a few times. :thumbsu:

:D I remember David King... I'm not sure if there was a player that I hated more in the AFL. I would have loved to have seen Fraser smack him around for a while.
