I think the mask thing has a common sense solution. Mandatory on public transport and in shopping centres.
Otherwise personal choice.

And don’t chop and change that. Leave it in place until “freedom day”.

As for lockdowns, I think they do more harm than good. Sure, lockdown offices etc where people can work from home. Gardening services? Stupid.

And send the kids to school and let them do kids sport. The damage being done to young kids is very visible even to the untrained.

There was a period of time where Australia was legit at Covid zero and looking sensational.
And all along we were saying: OMG.. there’s more dangerous covid variants out there in other countries.

So what did we do? We let anyone in, into the country and into our hotels.

And now look where we are.

NSW is unrepairable until 2022.
Victoria is also in trouble if we can’t enforce a hard border closure on NSW.

AND we are still telling the same story.. our health system is limited and we don’t have enough ICU beds. 20 months into a pandemic.

Drowning in debt. Businesses going under. Mental health rising. Children can’t get to school.

If you think Australia is in a good position, you are absolutely kidding yourself.

My son has started a University course in computer science.
Of course much of it was being done from home. He'd only just started at campus, and was enjoying the face to face lectures and tutorials, as well as meeting the other students and being able to share concerns with the work , bounce ideas of each other and generally have a social experience. Anyone who's done Uni , its a very different social experience to high school.

He's disappointed that the university have announced that they will be largely work from home in future.
Now i've done an MBA by "distance education" and it suited me at the time, since i was working full time as well, but by no means does it offer the same experience as on-campus education, and i believe that many students will underachieve by doing what is essentially a correspondence course.

Hell you might as well find a USA based institution as a crappy local one who doesn't want to spend money on infrastructure.
We are shoving our kids into their bedrooms where they watch movies, play games, study and socialise on their pc.

I'd certainly hope that the government drastically reduces funding for any Educational Organizations who reduce their face to face teaching after Covid lockdowns are gone.

This week ministers who should have known better were pretending that parliament had vested ministers with the power to do whatever they liked and that the public could not complain if they had done just that.

It’s a nice situation if the primary purpose of political power is to spend money on one’s own side and not with regard to any overriding principle or public interest. It’s a nice situation if one dispenses with the idea that politics is about the proper stewardship of public resources. It’s a nice situation if one is in power, rather than out of power. It’s a nice situation if one can use incumbency to stack the deck against the other side.
