It is a measuring contest though.. All we have as a tool for comparison across generations

An awesome career, but you need to stack rank him against others if you really want to see his standing in the Game
I don’t think he’ll be a Legend (at least based on his playing career). That is the realm of multiple Brownlows / Colemans and the like - as you say, GAJ & Buddy will be there but not sure who else from recent years.

The fact that it is debatable reflects well on him of course.

Sits comfortably with Selwood, Dangerfield, Hodge, Neale, Mitchell and Dusty on the rung below legend status (IMO). Bloody good company to keep.

I feel like Hodge had solid skills under the hottest pressure and his captaincy is a level above nearly all modern captains.

Pendles has him covered for consistency (just) and longevity (easily) but as good a captain/leader he became (and it was pretty good), he's not in Hodges stratosphere.

Thats a very interesting one to compare but id have Hodge ahead even with way less games.

I mean they are on the same tier, not comparing like-like. Greats of the last few decades.

Pretty different players

Believe I saw a stat somewhere that Pendlepunch has the worst goals/goal assists average in finals for midfielders who've played at least a handful of finals so stats don't get skewed by 1 game.

Good player, obviously very durable, but nothing special.
Kicked a goal in a winning grand final in 2023 so that’s all that matters :) having said that we have experimented with him as a forward at times with mixed results

Pendles is an ornament to the game and because of the way he manages time and space has been one of the players who gives extra value to the spectators. So good to watch. Longevity at a high level goes close to making him Collingwoods best ever but maybe Bucks still shades him

In the modern game i would have him about 3rd rung. Last 20 years give GAJ and Buddy their own spot. After that Dusty, Danger, Fyfe(at his best, longevity of best hurts him)N Reiwoldt. Next i have Pendles and Selwood very close, would put Gawn and maybe Hawkins and J Reiwoldt. After that Mitchell, Swan and a few others

Pendles and Selwood for mine had such an early and longtime spent at the top level but never challenged for being the best ppayer in the game at any g8ven time. Have probably.left 1 or 2 out.

Name a single season where he was best player in the game. Or even the best mid.

Enough said.
After he retires though I reckon he’ll be one of those guys that gets forgotten.

Like Paul Kelly, Simon Black and Robert Harvey.
true. Robert harveys current standing in the game is a joke. He was clearly the second best mid of the nineties behind only williams. Yet today people rank the likes of voss, buckley, riccuito and hird as better. Ridiculous.

I thought he was a poor man's Nick Dal Santo when he started his career with his skillful left foot and his ability to avoid traffic.

All these years later I still haven't changed my opinion, I still think he's a poor man's Nick Dal Santo but he's had a great career.
