Hey (I'm new)

I was at the game on the weekend (pitiful game, umpires included)
But I was thinking, Why not move Scott Stevens up forward. He seems to kick goals everytime he goes anywhere near the forward line this year. I mean, he is predominately playing defense, yet he is our 3rd top goal-kicker. I never really rated Stevens, but gee he has impressed me this year.

Yeh ok, we just lost Basset and our defence is starting to weaken, how bout move kenny mcgregor back there - i reckon he plays better as a defender than a forward anyways. Keep Bock up forward, at least he can mark the ball.

Porplyzia was sent to a key defensive position in last QTR on sunday. He cant play defence, keep him down forward where he can kick goals. He has an excellent kick.

Any chance of Marty Mattner having an earpiece reminding him to bounce the ball?

One more thing, Griffen looks great potential in the forward lines imo.

Any thoughts on the above?

I generally feel Stevens is a better forward then the rest that we have down there, he kicks well and moves better then McGregor or Bock.
The trouble with having Bock and McGregor down back is moving the same things Stevens is better at out of the back lines.
When Bock and Mcgregor get possession in the defensive end of the ground what happens is not attractive having them there is akin to having shortish slow ruck men down back with poor disposal skills.
McGregor more so then Bock but the lack of speed and skill of them is troubling as putting them down there is negative for rebound ability.
McGregor can mark better then he can do anything else, Bock is not a better grab he doesn't take contested marks, he takes lead up marks and other times marks when his opponent is just being inept he does not contest as well as McGregor in a man on man contest when it's in the air and McGregor keeps the ball in the area better in these situations.

welcome trecke

Stevens is better suited to being a third tall forward IMO.....but with Bassett going down he should fill the 3rd tall defender role.

He is not big enough for CHB or CHF - but can get away with taking the 3rd possie - and he showed again on the weekend he has good goal sense and can pop up unchecked if not shown respect.

As many have said here - Mattner's confidence continues to be undermined by playing him in defence. It would be nice to see him further up the ground when he can receive and kick to position

Do you actually remember Bock's season at CHB in 2005? Provided good rebound and his disposal by foot was and still is generally precise. Not too sure where you're coming from.

Kenny doesn't provide much rebound from defence when he plays there, and I'd much rather him be played close to goal because of his contested marking ability.

What are we missing that the coaching panel see in Mattner playing in defence? I'm totally baffled as to why they've persisted with it for so long. He's played some good footy in patches but he just isn't composed enough to playing in defence.

I get the feeling that this is why they're persisting - to try and add a defensive side to his game. While he had a great season in 2005 (IIRC).....he was criticised for letting his opponent get away from him which ultimately led to his surprise dumping for 2 games early in 2006.

Since then they seem intent on trying to fit a square peg in a round hole by turning him into a defender. I understand the need for flexibility and rebound and succession planning and teaching...........but it's becoming to the detriment of Marty as a footballer and is in fact robbing us of a vital attacking and ball carrying option - which are few and far between at the moment.

It's time to end the experiment IMO

That sums it up pretty well MD :thumbsu:

Agreed, Mattner must be left to roam around on the wing again. He is fast and tall and IMO that type of player is very valuable to have around the ground. Used to give us great dash and run from half back/wings into the forward line and thats what I want to see him doing again. We need someone who will run the lines, take opponents on and kick long inside 50, and I feel Mattner is the man to do it.

Put him back on the wing Craigy.

IMO, we are better off with Bock in defence & Stevens up forward ... but with Bassett injured, I think we will need them both in defence. Stevens is a smart footballer, but as mentioned, more suited as a 3rd tall in defence/attack.

Like others have mentioned, I too would like Mattner on a wing, as he is a potential AA wingman, but only an average defender.

I cant believe this is the case, if it were then NC is very stubborn. Sure you can teach someone a lesson, but to the teams detrement?

Marty has done some good jobs in defence, however the team is lacking an attacking thrust and he along with Burton were awesome in 2005 doing just that! They were wingman that filled in holes in the oppositions forward line and then then ran forward. Both have good speed/endurance that they could run amock. Plus Marty's midfield pressure/tackling is first class.

A few have mentioned about stevens as 3rd defender,
One thing i especially noticed in the defense on the weekend, was the wonderful job Torney done.
Its so much better seeing the game live than on tv because was able to see the massive job which he was doing. Quite often as the eagles kicked into the forward line, torney was inbetween 2 contests waiting to see who the ball went to, then he was running over and being the 3rd man in the contest. He wasn't marking anyone all day, just being the 3rd man up and providing a good rebound out of D50. Great to see his injury free for a change!

The problem with Marty Mattners running game is he tends to carry the ball too far. Instead of grabbing it on the HBF, taking it to centre/centre wing and spotting up a leading target, he'll try to run to HF, and either blaze away at an unsettled forward line due to him carrying the ball half the field, or he'll get run down.

He needs to bounce less, and hit targets more or drill the goals from HF.

Oh so its someone other then Bock that eventually ends up kicking long to nothing, when he carries the ball he does fine but when he marks he slows it up considerably as he does not tend to play on.

He needs to bounce more so he doesn't run too far with it.
The problem with Mattners running is there is meant to be players in support of him at least some time as other sides have shepherding and running with players, there doesn't tend to be with him does there. They aren't running for each other as much atm.
Haven't seen him getting that far down the field this season as he has been in the back lines if he was getting down there I would be well pleased as he can kick a goal if he gets the opportunity, when I've seen him forward he has scored
There is definitely some hesitancy about where and when he decides to dispose of it indeed, much like Thompson in front of goals lately.
