I know we harp on about how good our drafting has been over the past 10 years, but seriously it was a big stuff up to not pick up this guy.

We were in the box seat with him in our VFL side and yet we repeatedly over looked him come draft day. Good on North for picking him up, he's going to be a star. Had we taken him, we could have confidently said that our defense had found it's lynchpin for the next ten years.

PS Byrnes is a spud

l was thinking the same thing when he wasn't picked up with the cats first pick.hes a geelong boy but l think they got harry maybe they knew about egan injury and needed a player with some experience and harry was the best they could get and couldn't afford trade a player or pick to get a such player.it would have been great getting scotty another cats player from geelong but tom gillies goes all right

It was hardly repeated, he went three picks after our second. Having said that would rather him than Dawson Simpson.

Geelong were going to pick him with a later pick. And North knew that so they took him early.

They said on the telecast that the reason Moons and him were going at was that they were friends. But they hinted that the only evidence they had of them being friends was that they played together. Just cause you play together doesnt make you friends. Seemed the way Moons kept going at him was they were anything but friends.

But I remember last year when Moons took a quick shot to Adam Simpsons guts and Moons laughed it off later as being a tap between mates.

Moons has a funny way off playing with friends.

Get over it.He'd still be in our VFL side at the moment.Who would he replace to be a regular in our senior side ?
Don't say Lonergan as he was a late change. At least at North he has a chance of a regular senior game.

I don't think they would have ever played together. Sure they were at the club at the same time, but they wouldn't have trained or played together.

I was disappointed we didn't get him and now, in retrospect, the fact we took Dawson Simpson ahead of him appears to be a mistake.

But that's the draft for you.

The issue was probably that teams weren't going to let us get another Matty Egan as a bargain. On that note, I saw the poor fella limping badly today. :(

Keep In mind Dawson is a 210cm 19yo ruckman and Scott is a 22yo defender with senior experience.

I'll reserve my judgement until Dawson fills out and learns his craft.

Understand that Riz, but from what I've seen of Dawson - probably a dozen VFL games - he's not progressing at the rate you would hope.

I hope to be proved wrong, but I'm not hopeful...

I think its a bit harsh to say we overlooked him ,Wells would have a very good idea how he rated him and what he though he was worth. Also it was our system and our success with Egan that probably encouraged North to jump early for him.
Good Luck to him but I can not fault Geelong at all. Perhaps as CE has said we could have picked him before a long term ruckman but I'll wait and see how it pans out long term before calling it a Well's mistake.

Concur about Dawson. Probably the slowest footballer I've ever seen. Seen talk on the site saying West could go off the list at the end of the year. I'd say they'd be better off cutting their losses with Dawson.

l would of thought getting scotty would of been a no brainer with a ageing key position players in defence.but at the time the club only had ottens, blake and west as ruckmen they choose ruck first.maybe getting gillies they got out of jail still early days we'll see what happens

Taylor was our first pick - which we would never have used on S.Thompson - but we had picks in between Taylor and the selection North took him with. So we could have taken both.

Aaron Sandilands took a while to develop from a really tall guy into a dominant AFL ruckman, give Dawson time.
Sandilands was a rookie pick, not a second round pick. Dawson is, and always was, a big risk. He was always more likely to not play even a single AFL match. He should have been a later pick.

Having said that, I don't think we should have used our second round pick on Scott Thompson - he was worth a mid-forties pick at best. North, IMO, paid over the odds. But I hope he pays off for them as he is character, and god knows, footy needs more characters.

Well summed up Jim.

On D. Simpson if we axed him he would more than likely be rookie listed by someone else anyway (or us). You take a giant who can't play, gotta be prepared for a lot of time and effort into making him a player (proven we can do it with Blake).

I agree I thought North took Thompson too early, I expected we would nab him late like Egan as teams seem to ignore VFL players. He looks pretty good, but I won't be fooled by the over examination and back slapping by the commentators of North's younger brigade I heard today. Plus, thanks Quarters for pulling your Selwood umpires agenda, just make sure every person within the continent will jump on him for winning free kicks. Every time he picks the ball up off the ground and he's whacked over the shoulders he must be staging.

Ten are going on about the former teammates and friends angle with Mooney and Thompson. Would they have even trained together let alone played together. Wasn't that SJs punishment to be banished from the main group and go and train with the VFL top ups away from the main group.

AS 'Chipped' in with another very good game today. But I guess you haven't been watching for the last month eh?

I'm really not interested in how Byrnes plays in a 70 point thumping and neither should you. He goes missing and isn't there when the game needs to be won. He isn't in the best 22 and I have seen more than enough footy to be able to formulate that opinion.

I'm sure you probably think Brett Spinks was the greatest full forward of all time. I remember he had a pretty good month in the late nineties.

Scott Thompson still wouldn't have played a senior game yet had we drafted him, and playing regular seniors football at North has helped him develop into the player he is today, which might be slightly overrated by some.

He was one of the reasons it was a 70pt thrashing, don't you get it!
He also spent the last quarter on the bench, and should've had 4 as well.

Pretty much spot on. I don't mind if they put a bit of time into Simpson. Quartermain's a hopeless commentator, so nothing surprises me there.

I didn't think Thompson was that great today - good later, but was far too loose early. Frankly, he's not important enough (at this stage) to be concerned that we didn't pick him.

I don't deny that he contributed today. I just maintain that we have seen the very best that Byrnes has to offer and while it is serviceable at times, he isn't in the best 22. I think gamble offers a lot more.
