Season where it stands now

Good post there AFC979810. Happy with the top 2 groups and the bottom group. Not sure that there's any real way of differentiating between the North/Collingwood group and the Richmond/Footscray group, but I can't fault you for having a go anyway.

5-14 is a chook raffle as far as I'm concerned.

happy to cop criticism for starting this thread but it will be interesting to see just how wrong i was at mid season and end

Yippee we have won ONE IN A ROW!

Talk to me in 15 weeks time about our prospects and I might get excited.

Any other so-called "analysis" is not worth the time taken to type it out on the keyboard.

we've had alot of injuries...once we get players back things could change....
..also with the cap on rotations we dont know how the other teams will go at the other end of the season... will teams like freo, west coast, north, essendon, collingwood all collapse in a heap?
time will tell

These type of threads never end well. Carlton would have pencilled in a win against Melbourne on the weekend.
x2.

Don't get ahead of ourselves after 1 win.

Lose 1 of these "paper" wins & we are in real strife.

We are good enough the beat the bottom sides and nowhere near the top sides. We will finish 8-12 on the ladder and get a pick around the 8-10 and stay middle of the road.

What we need to do is play kids over senior players (Hartigan over Rutten, Brown / Laird over Reilly, Crouch / Lyons over Thompson, Smack / JJ / Lynch over Pod. This is not a blight on those players but why waste games on players who won't be around for our next premiership, get another 20 games into the kids and we will reap the rewards sooner. Geelong made some hard calls on experienced players and a couple have some footy left in them but the kids are getting games which is more important.

The only thing that worries me with that scenario is whether it makes the minds of people like Dangerfield and Sloane start to wander.

Tbh I think they would accept it if they could see it was part of a plan to cut our losses and bounce back next year by turning over older guys who won't feature in our future for young replacements and picking up picks around 5 and 25 for a gun outside player and a KPP. I think someone like Danger is pretty realistic about how the AFL requires you to bottom feed before allowing you to challenge

Haven't really seen enough to make any predictions yet. My expectations are pretty low and one game isn't going to change that. Some good signs but you have to remember it's one game...who knows if we'll be consistent or if Sunday was a fluke. Also St Kilda are AWFUL...

That said there's nothing wrong with having a bit of fun trying to figure out where we'll finish/being hopeful.

so after round 4 and being 1 and 3 you lot are saying season's over play the kids...

...geez i did not pay membership for the club to have that attitude!

Do you want to win premierships or be middle of the road like the last 15 years? Either you go for a premiership or you finish low, get games into the kids and prepare for an assault in 2015. We are not going to beat Hawks, Freo, Essendon and have already been beaten by Geelong, Port and Syd who will likely be playing finals. If we can barely beat a top 8 side then yeah we can enjoy beating the bottom teams and stay stagnant and finish middle of the road.

I'd much rather see us develop our internal talent and get games into the kids to fast track their progress. Rutten, Reilly, Thompson, Porps will not be around for our next premiership and if we don't bottom out and bring in some elite talent in the next few years neither will Danger, Sloane and Tex etc. I just want to see my club win a premiership and I am happy to have a few bad years to do that.

Collingwood, Hawks, Geelong, West Coast have all bottomed out in the 2000s and I doubt their members are complaining considering they actually have premierships to show for it.

If we can play ourselves into some form then absolutely try and make the 8 but realistically we are making up the numbers and we need some decent picks to make up for Tippettgate

I wrote this for another thread. It fits better here:

"Some good signs on the weekend and we have some room and time now to build momentum. The jury will probably remain out for the next few weeks regarding where we are at and if we are improving."

I have also said we were not pressured Sunday as we were the first three weeks. The Doggies may well be the best of tests in this regard in the coming few weeks although GWS and even Melbourne under Roo's might not be easy beats either. A cliche I know, but one week at a time!

Bottoming out is a judgement call rather than a formulaic one.

I think list assessment is one of the most poorly analyzed aspects of our game. The assessments seem to be full of confirmation bias.

Nobody wants to talk about massive elephants in the room like Port's list being rated the worst in the competition just 12 months ago.

List assessments are frequently off the mark because people don't take into account the huge number of variables that go into winning games of football.

People, usually with no understanding of competitive sport, want to make the quick assessment that shit team = shit list, but this frequently is not the case.

We wont make the eight this year. The comp is so close you can only pencil a win in against maybe 2 sides (melbourne and GWS) and even those teams could beat you if you take them lightly. I dont think we will beat Gold Coast this year.
I hope to God i am wrong, but i can just see it in my mind.
