Collingwood is considering selecting young ruckman David Fanning for the club's round one clash against the Western Bulldogs at the MCG.
The 204cm former NBL basketballer was promoted to the club's senior list last week in the place of Tom Davidson who's been placed on the long-term injury list.
Fanning started in the ruck for the Magpies in their Wizard Regional Challenge match against the Sydney Swans in Newcastle last Saturday, changing regularly with Josh Fraser.
Collingwood coach Mick Malthouse said the 100kg 20-year-old was in the running for selection, as part of a nucleus of 28 or so players in contention for the match.
"Dave's had a very good pre-season. He gives us a different dimension in there. He's a bit taller than most ruckmen," Malthouse told afl.com.au.
"Having a basketball background, I reckon he delivers the ball differently. It's not so much a tap … It's a bit different to a tip off. He just seems to use his hands well so it's been a good pre-season for him."
Fanning was promoted to their senior list partly as insurance for the Magpies, who will be without the promising Guy Richards - who's recovering from a strained posterior cruciate ligament - for at least the first couple of rounds.
Davidson, who's on the comeback after a second knee reconstruction, has been hampered by a chronic achilles tendon injury and will be required to spend at least eight weeks on the long term injury list.
In Newcastle, the Pies also played 19-year-old Brayden Shaw - the son of 1990 Collingwood premiership captain Tony Shaw - in one of his first significant hit-outs of senior football for the club.
"He might have had a bit of a run in a practice match last year, but this was his first one to see how he went against some talented midfielders," Malthouse said.
"We're pretty happy with the way he went. He's one of those players we're been looking for as a first hands player.
"He's pretty strong for his size - he's 183cm so he's a bit taller than what his father was.
"He's got a lot of idiosyncrasies like him (his father) - head over the football, he uses it well.
"He's got a great deal of courage. What he's been able to do at Williamstown (in the VFL) is kick goals from the forward flank."
++++++++++++
Pretty interesting stuff. Hopefully Shawry might be in the mix. I haven't seen Fanning play, but he sounds like a pretty decent package, build-wise. If he plays the same role, then he can swap with Fraser and Rocca (in bursts), which will provide a pretty versatile ruck combination.
Is C. Cloke a chance for Round 1?
