Selection for Sunday's Final

Im really surprised Goldsack did not even get named as an emergency. Really unlucky, i thought he played his role pretty well last week. Oh well, bring on RUSTY :)

As for Marty, people that know him well have previously said he won't leave until he achieves everything he wants to, and he hasn't done that yet, so I'm confident not only he will stay, but he will play senior footy again this year.
I hope you're right, but I'd like to point out that while I'm a bit of a conspiracy theorist, I'm not the "sky is falling" kind. I was probably the least concerned Pies BF member regarding Dayne Beams and the spectre of the GC17, aside from possibly Didaka who had info straight from the horse's mouth.

After last week, and the way we brought the ball out of the backline, and the fact that Marty was BOG in the VFL, I would have thought he was a dead-set cert to be named to at least the extended bench. The fact that he isn't worries me a great deal.

Again, I hope you're right and I'm wrong on this one.

Once again, I agree on both points.

I hope I and all the "talk" is right about Marty wanting to commit to the pies.

And also I agree about our run out of defense.

With the side selected, or at least the most likely side, we seem to lack real run out of the backline outside of Heath Shaw.

This means that if Heath is tagged heavily or heavens forbid gets injured during the game, this area may become our biggest weakness.

I'd love to see Clarke return soon, if he stars in the VFL final and we lose, he is a certain inclusion, but if we happen to win he may find it hard to regain his spot in the 22, and that's when his loyalty may be tested.

For the record, I wanted Marty in this week, ahead of Wellingham, McCarthy, Dick and Sidebottom.

L Brown can't be out, he didn't play last week. He also doesn't need Wood to be dropped for him, they play different positions and L Brown will be needed to smash Kosi at every opportunity.

Didak Swan Pendels

Lockyer Cloke Beams

I would rather N Brown than Leigh but thats not going to happen.. The only change will be if N Brown comes in to play forward & McCarthy or wellingham goes out

I keep coming back to Michael Gardiner and how he can play after missing one match with a hamstring injury.

Surely his inclusion actually dictates our selection.

If Gardiner is named tomorrow; Nathan Brown and Leigh Brown both have to play along with Pendles, with Goldsack, Wellingham and McCarthy the outs.

If Gardiner isn't named or appears to be a ruse; Leigh Brown and Pendles the only likely ins, with Goldsack and McCarthy out.

In: N and L Brown, Pendlebury

Out: Dick, Goldsack, Wellingham

with N Brown forward, L Brown back

I'd agree 100% if it wasn't finals time. It'd disrupt our structure too much.

I'd tell him he won't be playing seniors in 2010 will he fixes the crap, because it is ridiculous at times.

Bit harsh on Trav , he's our best option at CHF constantly bringing the ball into the fwd 50, runs all day & goes hard at the football. Get off his back.

Pfft Atleast he gets more than 5 possies per game and does it with 2 bloke hanging off his neck each game. Dropping him for N.Brown would be a f*****g joke.

If anything bring in Dawes to strengthen the forward line. He did well in the Adelaide game when swung forward.

Re: Selection

I expect they're saving Rocca for the GF. No Clarke either. But a strong team.:thumbsu:
yeah because bringing in a a player who hasn't played at the top level since round 7 would be a great idea.

Rocca will not play again this year. why would you want a player who at his best couldn't kick a bag of goals against a top 8 side, let alone someone with Roccas build & fitness.

Like I said, I'm not for doing it right now.

I am for doing it next season though, not for Brown specifically, but telling him he can play seniors when he fixes his problem.

He'd be twice as dangerous if he could kick for goal, there can't be many more ways left to improve his kicking.

Brown, Anthony and Cloke up forward is too tall for mine.

We need to stop the Saint's rebound, three talls won't help that at all.

Agree with this

Im of the thinking that, especially if Gardiner withdraws, that Fraser could be that 3rd tall option, if required for around 30% of the game. He is far under-utilised as a forward

Maybe not the best time to start swinging him there though :)

Didny work last week against the Dogs even though they had Hudson out. Wood and Fraser were smashed by Minson and didnt give a yelp when pushed forward.

If Gardiner doesnt play Id rahter drop Wood or Fraser and bring in Dawes to play forward and pinch hit in the ruck when required. We will lose the ruck contests either way.

Unlucky for the Sack, but overall the selections are spot on.

- Surely, Pendles must come in for Wellingham (he's too soft and hasn't been getting enough of the ball lately - Their midfield will eat him alive!)

- Rusty for Dick (Dick is out of form and Steel has been cleaning up in the 2's - I know there's a big difference between AFL and VFL but what more can he do?) and

- Nat Brown/L Brown for Goldy (as I said unlucky for the Sack, but it's hard to find a match up for him against the Aints - I tend to lean with N Brown because he played well on Kosi in the last match and that's gota count for something)

All in all, should be a great game and can't wait for Sunday!

I don't know if Dick has enough grunt to play a final at this stage of his career.

I'd play McCarthy forward. His hard at it and I wouldn't be surprised if he could scrap a few goals during the game through sheer grunt up forward.

Agree. Or else Thomas to permanent forward, and McCarthy more in the middle. We probably need to drop Dick, but need to replace his fwd pressue somehow, especially with Medders labouring.

c) Marty Clarke may be pulling the pin. :(

I really hope you're wrong. To allay my worries, I'm going to say he wasn't selected on fitness reasons, plus he's not exactly the hardest player, which is going to be very important against the Saints.

L Brown will be needed to smash Kosi at every opportunity.

If Leigh Brown takes Kosi, we will lose the game. It's that simple. He's a god-awful match-up for him.

The selection this week is a weird one and I reckon it could mean someone tall is coming in under a cloud.
I heard the ins before but when I looked at the extended bench i was a bit surprised.

-Dick, Wello, McCarthy, Sidebottom, Wood, N Brown, Beams on an extended bench with L Brown on the field?

Only one of the Browns can play as neither would have been picked as a forward with others (Dawes, Rocca and even Reid) ahead of them in this area. It simply makes no sense to put N Brown on an extended bench knowing he definitely won't play; especially considering the fact that it might be wet and we could have named another mid or Goldsack in there. Lil fishy me thinks. What do others think? Just Mick playing mind games or perhaps already knowing who he's going in with and just adding Nate as a contingency? I would have thought if Goldy went out, Clarke might at least have been an emergency with his ability in the wet.

If there are no injuries I think it will be as follows. Dick, Wood and Beams with Wello/Sidey/McCarthy in line for the other spot. At this stage I think Wello pips them because with Pendles coming back in an inside mid isn't a priority and he can break the lines.

Matchups:
Johnson on Montagna
Toovey on Milne
Shaw on Schneider
O'Brien on Riewoldt
Presti on Kosi
Maxi on Goddard when forward
Brown to take the resting ruck and providing chop-out/assistance to the other backs when he doesn't have a matchup. If Roo goes deep at any stage, Presti will go to him and Brown goes on to Kosi
Pendles to go head to head with Hayes
Need to play attacking players on Dal at different stages to make him accountable. So maybe didak head to head for a while and thomas to play a loose tag for a while also. Thomo would need to go forward and hurt him on the scoreboard as he did to Judd.

Go Pies!!!!

This game has the makings of being 'one hell u va' defensive grind. I hope our forwards take every opp they get.

It's 1st V's 2nd regarding average tackles per game- St Kilda 72 v Coll 60

Given this L Brown will likely play both Frwd and def roles. I hope frwd- it would mean that we would have greater defensive pressure on our frwd line. Otherwise we would see a repeat of the brissy game with L Brown on J. Brown and Maxwell 3rd up (albeit presti went down).
